The pic of Oprah with her curly mane on the cover of O magazine has been everywhere! I got emails from everyone about it and I’ve seen it on most of my favorite hair blogs. We are all excited, shocked, and skeptical at the same time.
We are excited because Oprah is big time and rocking her natural hair on her magazine is big time acceptance of what she has ALWAYS hid from the public.
We are also shocked by this decision because, we never thought Oprah would rock her natural hair on Camera, let alone on her magazine! During her interview with Chris Rock about his documentary “Good Hair:, she told the world that she was in fact natural, had not been relaxed, and that all the hair on her head was HERS! Chris rock did the scalp finger rake test, where he put his fingers on her scalp and raked them through her hair to ensure that there were no weave tracks hiding. To his surprise and most of the world, Oprah’s hair was all hers. But was it indeed only heat styled?
We are skeptical because her hair stylist Andre Walker shared with everyone in an interview last year, that he relaxes Oprah’s hair. Hmmmm? Don’t believe me, read for yourself.
Q: Does Oprah use a relaxer? If so, how do you protect her from damage and breakage?
Andre: Yes, I do relax it. Most relaxers are either calcium or sodium based. I tend to like calcium based, or no-lye relaxers. They tend to be less damaging. Also, the new keratin Brazilian hair straighteners are great. But I want to learn more about them. I gave Oprah one once and the chemical fumes were enough to knock you out. But the hair is unbelievably beautiful. Still, I want to see and read more about it. I don’t think they are completely formaldehyde-free, because that’s the ingredient that makes them work.
My personal opinion is simple. I LOVE IT! Oprah tweeted this pic of her natural hair a while ago and I was shocked!
I posted the pic of the magazine cover on FB yesterday and the girls really chimed in!
Alexis D.: She looks cute. Oprah always went natural during the off seasons of, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” or when she did Essence magazine. I always wondered if she just kept that straight look for her show.
Tierany G.: Next month, there are going to be naturalistas popping up everywhere!! The natural hair movement has just been placed on steroids!!! LOL
Nadja T.: I think it’s a wig, only saying this because she has worn the curlier looks before to give her hair a rest. If it was her natural hair i think she would have had to bc if she was a relaxer type of women or maybe from heat damage too. It would also depend when this shot was actually taken? I’m just throwing out a guess…
Tori S.: Omgeeeeeee. that’s lovely. can’t wait until my hair is like that!!!
Madenia W.: Per her mags’ website: For the first time ever, Oprah’s appearing on the cover of O without blow-drying or straightening her hair. She says that wearing her hair naturally—as she often does on weekends and on vacation—makes her feel unencumbered. But there was a time when she wanted to just cut it all off. “I wanted to wear it close-cropped a la Camille Cosby but her husband Bill convinced me otherwise. ‘Don’t do it,’ he said. ‘You’ve got the wrong head shape and you’ll disappoint yourself.’ I took his advice,” she says.”
LaDonna S.: I’ve always loved her thick natural hair. Like many of us naturals she enjoys having the ability to change it up whenever she want to w/o the use of chemicals straighteners. . . I don’t see the big deal.
What are your thoughts?
Why do you think she made this reveal?
