Oil Rinsing Treatment for Dry Natural Hair

Recently, I have been having a problem with extremely dry hair. I’ve continued to deep condition on a regular basis and I have tried several different moisturizers. I finally found a moisturizer that helped somewhat, but I still wasn’t having good air dry results. When I would towel dry and apply my leave ins, my hair would be completely dry again within ten minutes. I also would have to moisturize and seal my hair every day, and that isn’t normal for me.

So I was browsing the hair boards one day and I came across an oil rinsing group that I am actually a member of but had forgotten about. It had been a long while since I oil rinsed, so I decided to try one on my next wash day. The oil rinse process is very simple but there a couple of different ways to do it.

How to do an Oil Rinse
1. Wash your hair with shampoo and rinse out.
2. Apply an oil of your choice to the entire length of your hair to saturate it. Let oil sit in hair for about 5 minutes.
3. Apply the deep conditioner of your choice over the oil.
4. Put on a plastic cap and allow treatment to set for as long as you like. Sitting under a dryer is optional. Do what works for you. Rinse out when done.

The very first time I tried oil rinsing, I used olive oil with my deep conditioner and it was just OK.  For my most recent oil rinse, I used hemp seed oil and it was just amazing. When I rinsed out the treatment, my hair air dried so soft and smooth and was very moisturized.  And this was after just one oil rinse treatment.

I will be doing this at least once a month or as often as I need to. I really recommend oil rinsing to anyone who has been having a problem with very dry hair. It’s a simple process and can work wonders!

Hello, I have tried a variation of this method; mixing evoo in a bowl with a deep conditioner and applying the mix to my hair; always had good results, but it was very messy.  I will try this version; I will also try this method with different oils, such as coconut, sweet almond or castor oil; thanks for the info.

i have oil rinsed 2 times. the first time i used evoo on wet hair before i cowashed and detangled with the evoo, then cowashed with trader joes nourish spa condiotner; my hair was very soft and elongated. the second time i used a mixture of oil including mostly Shea butter after a  wash and my hair did not feel  soft. so i think i  will only oil rinse before a cowash with evoo
