Does Eco Styler Gel Define Your Curls?

I’ve watched many of my fellow naturalistas on YT use Eco Styler gel to define their curls.  After seeing a few of my Type 4 curlfriends use it, I was sure it would work for me.

A few of my fellow curlies compared the Eco Styler Gel to the Kinky Curly Curling Custard, stating that for a fraction of the price, you could get defined curls.  I wanted to revisit my wash n go, but I didn’t have anymore Kinky Curly Curling Custard and I have a large jar of Eco Styler gel, so I thought I’d give it a try.

I’m going to be brutally honest with you, my hair looked AHotMess[dot]com!  It was a #FAIL. My hair was stiff, hard, had no movement, and I just looked crazy.  A few of my subscribers said I looked like Fredrick Douglas! LOL

When I used the Kinky Curly Curling Custard, my hair looked FAB-U-LOUS!  I will never ever ever use the Eco Styler gel to define my curls again.  For my hair, it’s best used to smooth or slick my hair down.

Be prepared to laugh really hard while you watch this video.

Does Eco Styler Gel define your curls? Have you ever been able to define your curl pattern?

All the Eco’s work for me beautifully but I don’t like KCCC…I also like Apro’s Olive Oil Gel better than the ECO! I just tried Queen Helene’s Royal Curl…LOVE!!!!!!!!!

  • http://www.purplebutterflycrochetcollection.com/ Cheryl Brown

I love the Eco Styler. I first dampen my hair spritz with a mixture of glycerin, olive oil and water and apply just a tiny tiny bit of the gel. For soft,no stiffness and lasts until I wash my hair.

    • http://discoveringnatural.com/ DiscoveringNatural

This is how I also apply Eco Styler Argan gel. I use castor oil also instead of olive oil

  • Mrssmitty728

Eco works great on my hair that KCCC stuff was a mess (FOR ME). I tried it a several times before taking it back for my $$ because it’s not cheap (this was before Target had it and in smaller jars). I tried it again a few months ago it was still a mess.

    • Leigh Walters

Interesting. Good you got your $$ back. It aint cheap. Did you use the KCCC for wash and goes? Or twist outs?

  • Judi B

I love my olive oil Eco! While it does leave y hair stuff and hard most of the time, I can either scrunch it out or add oil to loosen it up. I used to HATE KCCC, however now that my hair is longer and I have embraced the “puff” I prefer it to Eco. This is simply because it leves my hair softer while giving just enough definition and hold. If I weren’t so proten sensitive I would use Eco a little bit more

  • Nikki P

I love EcoStyler gel. It’s the ONLY thing that defines my curls. I use A little Shea Moisture under it to prevent the crunches. Jane Carter’s products with it also (not the curl cream).

    • http://www.onyxroseonline.com/ Onyx Rose

Agreed. Eco Styler gel is the ONLY gel that defines my curls the way I like. I’ve tried everything from Fantasia IC to Smooth ‘N Shine. The only con about Eco Styler is that you have to be careful with what you mix it with or else it leaves nasty why residue/flakes. I don’t even mind the “hardness;” I like good hold.

  • Hermione Ware

I hear ya!!! Gel makes my hair look like a HOT MESS!!!

  • Sxyscorpian

Girl, that facial expression right there in the video is absolutely HILARIOUS!  LOL!  I’ve never used ECO as a curl definer only KCCC, and based upon that facial expression, I don’t think I’ll be trying!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      LMAO!

  • lilkunta

Th part is how frederick douglass parted his hair so that is probably why you are being told you look like frederick douglass. if you did a center part they might say you look like freddie from A Different World(cree summers).

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

LMAO! thanks for breaking it down for me. I don’t like center parts though.

  • lulu

i hate using gel so so somuch and KCKT is ok on my hair…BUT my hair seems to love shea moisture’s curl souffle…i know everyone hates it but mixed with SM deep treatment masque…it’s just perfection for me…finally something my hair seems to like…

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

I have the souffle. I should try to see if it will define my curls.

      • Tiffany

I’ve tried the souffle thinking I would love it because I adore SM Curl Enhancing Smoothie. But oh no! It leaves a white residue, sticky.. I will never use it again.

        • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Hmmm how did you use it? It’s not a styling gel, so you can’t glob it on.

    • Leigh Walters

Wow, the KCKT is the only product that gave me success with wash and goes. I have to try the curl souffle thought.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001105132424 ProverbsThirtyone Sista

I like it mixed with eco styler. The combo produced one of my best wash and go’s.

  • Sagliv26

Glad I was introduced to Eco styler gel. I love it for my puff. Use to use Pink oil moisturizer conditioning gel. It held for a moment but not the whole day. The more you use you will start to have the drip affect. Lol! Started using the ESG and my puff had better curls, hair held the whole day and edges held alright. Very rarely I will use the olive oil edge control gel for my edges.

  • Cristal Harris

Eco works for me…I llike it because it gives a heaviness that KCCC will never give…and KCCC strinks hair up really badly…but I use conditoner, marguetires magic, castoroil under eco when Im doing a wash n go…or else you get crunch city.

    • Leigh Walters

Yes, I get excessive shrinkage with the KCCC as well. But it hold my curls beautifully. I am looking for a product that will stretch my curls, while giving me that KCCC hold.

  • http://nesheaholic.com/ LaNeshe

KCCC works much better for me, and has better ingredients. I do use the eco styler I have to twist my husband’s locs tho.

    • Leigh Walters

Yes! I love the KCCC. Hate the price thought lol.

  • Misspretty1

Wow I am surprised! I love the oilve oil Eco Styler ! I had horrendous results with KCCC!!! :(
Eco I use with every braid out for my definition..along with my CASTOR OIL!!! BOOM!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Lucky you!!
I’m gonna try it with my twist out and braid out.

    • Leigh Walters

Interesting. I never think to use gel for twist outs. I may try tonight. I usually just use the olive oil smooth and hold pudding, leave in, and some oils. I cant wait to try the gel tonight.

      • Misspretty1

I am in love with olive oil Eco Gel a little spritz of “Frank Juice” and Castor oil and I do a braid out with cornrows now and I love it!!!!

        • Leigh Walters

Lol frank juice? Honestly I didn’t even try. I have to promise my self that over the weekend I will do my flat twists with the ECO

      • Misspretty1

        Yes it Does!!!!

        • Leigh Walters

It worked great for me!! I’m so excited. Thank you!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Monica-Johnson-Valdez/722826666 Monica Johnson Valdez

Eco does define my curls.  I dont use so much of it anymore. mostly for slicking my sides and front.
I love the Olive oil Eco…

    • Leigh Walters

I get the same results with the Olive oil eco. Makes my hair soft and does not get flaky. But, I do not use it for wash and gos, or for twist outs. I mainly use it for buns.

  • Sherrilanelle

I tried Eco styler too.. It define my hair but it mad it quite as do alot of products…. I am newly BCed… So, I’m trying to find the best thing that work for my hair and I haven’t found it so far. Like today, i cowashed with organic – coconut milk conditioner, than I added Dr miracle- leave in conditioner and after that I sealed with coconut oil… My hair was really nice when it is wet but now that it has had time to dry, it feels kind of hard and stiff.. I tried different products but the ended products is the same… I don’t want to go out and by a lot of products and the end product is the same… I want soft hair when wet and dry… When I was transitioning my new growth was soft ans manageable and that made me really want to do the BC.. Now I’m kind of regretting it.. Could really use your advice?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Hey love,
gels like eco styler gel have a strong hold, so when you use them they will leave your hair feeling hard because thats what they are made to do.

If you want soft hair, stick with an oil and moisturizer.

      • Thomasina

I LOVE Eco Styler Olive Oil. It has never left my hair feeling hard. I have 3b or 3c mostly over my head. My issue is I have to braid or twist out every other night other my hair loses the curl.  Kinky Curl–NO, I was disappointed with it.

        • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Isnt it funny how everyones hair is so different? Your hair responds well to it while mine just hardens like stone. Your hair didnt like Kinky-Curly, my hair was very defined with it.

        • Tiffany

I agree! I used Kinky Curly for about 6 months. I didn’t like it at all. The only thing I liked was the Knot Today, it really worked great, but other than that, the other products in the line I didn’t like. The Come Clean shampoo stripped my hair very badly. The Curling Custard was sticky, when it dried, it left my hair hard, brittle, after a few months, my hair became so brittle it started to break off. I am NOT a Kinky Curly fan.

    • Norree C

I am transitioning and I think I have finally found the products for me. I had the same issues you have with wet vs dry hair. I’m currently using Pantene’s Cowash Conditioner & L’Oreal Paris’ Ever Curl Leave-In Cream mixed With Cantu’s Shea Butter leave in conditioner. Then I spray a bit of a water/African Pride Growth Oil mixture and my hair is soft and fluffy. I received several comments in one day!! These products helped define what little natural texture I have and I stay in an extremely hot and humid area (Houston, Texas lol). I have type 3c/4a hair.

  • Natural Beauty

I’m glad that I was abel to find a blogger with hair similar to mine but the kinky curly made my hair look at hot mess and I was thinking about trying ECO styler next but you make me not want to try it.  Any other wash and go products that might work with 4b hair?
    celebrateyournaturalbeauty.blogspot.com

    • lilkunta

natural beauty,  hello. i too was so excited wheen i found this page with the title ‘kinky curly’, but then disappointed bc jenell’s hair is 4b. I emailed her. She is very nice and gracious. She said I may think my hair is 4z/super coily but I need to moisturise and then my true hair type will be revealed.

  • LaWanda S

I just tried Wetline Styling Gel, and I love wash n gos again.  I am on 4th day hair, I put on bonnet at night, in the morning use my water spritz bottle and shake my head love it.

  • Diamondz2012

LOVE Queen Helenes Royal Curl!!! I still put the Kinky Curly leave in conditioner in THEN i put in RC and it works great! Not too hard and holds curls through the hold day (for me) and it also doesnt leave my fro looking poofy.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Thanks!
Do you think we have similar hair types? I’m wondering if I could get success from your method?

    • flozell

My hair does not like Queen H Royal Curl but I often use SM curl smoothie mixed with Eco Olive Oil and it works pretty well. My best curl definer is Jamaican mango lime coiling creme

  • Brigletts

this post was hysterical.  the look on your face is priceless.  i’ve tried both kccc and eco-styler and neither worked well for my hair.  i’ll stick to my shea moisture products and recently had some samples of kera care natural products that were really good.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Hahaha!
I agree, Shea moisture is where it’s at!

  • http://twitter.com/DailyCurlz dailyCurlz

I only use eco for my edges, when I used it all over my hair it was a hot mess

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Like mine? Lol
      A hot mess dot com!

      • Jessie

When you use eco syler or ic fantasia you have to moisturize your hair really well first, otherwise it will be hard. I usually use a dollup of conditioner and then my glycerin and water mix and it never gets hard and I am very heavyhanded when it comes to gel. Try that and it will work I promise.

  • Sonya

This is probably one of the funniest videos EVER. She is very funny. I’ve had those moments when you have high expectations and then you are faced with an epic failure. Love this video.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Thanks love!
Moments like these make us appreciate twist outs. Lol

  • jessica jackson

You are so brave!!! Your curl pattern is very similar to mine and for that reason I will NOT even try ECO styler gel. Your hair folly has enlightened me! Thank you lol

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Haha. Y do you say I’m brave? ;-)

      • jessica jackson

Because you knew the chances of ESG working on your hair were fifty/fifty and you went for it anyway! lol

        • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Haha. Yea. Everyone is always mentioning how it’s a great alternative to KCCC. Not for me. ;-)

  • Helen

Eco styler olive oil gel works great for me ! my hair is type 4a….

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

I’m #jealous! You use it for wash n gos?
      How do you use them?

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1788136110 Shay Bell-Allen

My cousin came up with a mix that works well with the ECOstyler brown gel #10 mixed with long aid curl activator (half and half).  I’ve noticed that most people use the olive oil or argan oil ecostyler which  leave my hair whiteand flaky but this mix allowed me to get my first wash n go with great curl definition.  I was able to wear it for about 3 days before having to wash again.  I wash with conditioner VO5 leave some in my hair then put my olive oil to seal in the moisture then i apply the gel mix to my hair and rake it through with my fingers small sections at a time and I have curls for days.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Do you have 4b hair like me?

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1788136110 Shay Bell-Allen

Yes, we meet at the bella kinks meetup in Dallas

        • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

          :-)

    • http://www.essenceofme.com freedomplease

      Interesting mix.

  • NewMe

Very funny ! So glad you did a trial run before your big event !!! Eco Styler Olive Oil gel worked well on my 4a hair at first. I used an olive oil and water spritz mix while styling with it the first time.  The next time, I mixed it with Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie?. However, prior to that, my hair had been pressed for years so the texture was not at its real state. I found this blog and comments because I am looking for non gel alternatives due to my concern with using Eco Styler regularly over time. Just tried Queen Helen’s Royal curl creme on a small section of my hair based on a couple comments others posted here. So far so good.

  • temi

    are you nigerian?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Nope. I’m Liberian.

  • mycurlytresses

I love the Eco Styler clear gel. It works well with Suave Naturals Coconut conditioner. I recently tried Eco Styler olive oil gel and it did nothing for my hair. It wasn’t as stiff as the clear even though it’s the same hold (10) but it also did not define my 3b curls as well as I like.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Hmmmm maybe I should try a different one? I used the Argan oil one.

      • mycurlytresses

I would try a different one. My hair is highly porous so I think the clear works best for me because it has hydrolyzed wheat protein. The olive oil Eco Styler doesn’t contain protein so my hair scoffed at it. :-)

  • Ediebnatural1

Wow Jenell! Thank you for informing me on the Eco Styling Gel. I will save myself money and just keep making and using the flaxseed gel… which seems to work pretty well for me treating my hair as if it’s already natural while I’m transitioning. That was as real as it gets! Lol! BLESS YOU!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      LMAO!!
Noooooo everyone’s hair is different. Read these comments and you will see that some people have great results. But if flaxseed gel works, stick with it.

    • Leigh Walters

Lol what do you mainly use gel for? Your twist outs or wash and gos?

  • Ash

After watching plenty of youtube videos with Eco Styler gel, I was sure it would work on my 4b hair…and it was an EPIC FAIL!!!!! I need to try KCCC…I keep hearing great things about it, but it’s so expensive!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

You had the same experience as me huh.
KCCC is worth it. Trust me!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100000681867376 Stacia S. Gordon

….I LOVE LOVE LOVE Eco styler Argan oil gel….. I’ve used it with KC Knot today and it made my hair look sooooo good…. Btw I’m 4b from my temples to the middle…..4c in the middle and 4a from the middle to the back…. Very weird!

    • Leigh Walters

Lol it’s not weird. Many of us have the same curl pattern problem. The Knot today is excellent to detangle the hair. I have a similar curl pattern, I have to try your method.

  • http://www.facebook.com/eliza.thompson.77 Eliza Thompson

Well, there you go! Now i know why my twist outs almost always look like your Frederick Douglas pic. Gonna try the Kinky curly curling custard and see; I know in the past, it would flake very quickly in my hair, but i will try it again!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Haha!

  • http://www.facebook.com/thatchicaray Rayven Elisabeth Reeves

Eco Styler works wonders in my hair!! My fav is the morrocan argon oil! See the evidence in my pic =)

  • Tiffany

I use the Olive Oil Eco Styler Gel (green one). I love it! It does a great job of defining my curls and gives me a little shine too. I’ve heard many naturals who try it don’t like it because it makes their hair crunchy & hard. That doesn’t happen when I use it. My hair has movement and my curl pattern shines through. I guess it just depends on your hair type. I’m somewhere between 3c and 4a hair type.

  • Ms Lici

eco styler is my firend. I jus started using the argan oil one and i have found MY gel!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      You go girl!

  • http://www.facebook.com/brittany.washington.988 Brittany Washington

With that and paul mitchel the conditioner as the base it defines my curl.. I have to scrunch once it’s dry and then it’s not as stiff.

  • Donna

My hair looks like your when I use the eco-styler. Definate fail for me as well. I have 3c, 4a hair.

  • curly girl

    Try Hawaiian silky gel…the best!!!

    • rmc2

Curly Girl is right. The very best (and to top it off dirt cheap) is Hawaiian Silky gel (or curl, can’t remember) activator. Defined like Kinky Curky Custard but it leaves your hair moist and soft. Plus you don’t need to add any leave in.

    • Chandra Alston

I know this was a year ago, but your hair is KICKIN’… LOOOOOVVVEEE IT… I have the Hawaiian silky 14 in 1 Activator and it makes soft springy curls, but they dry out and lost ther shape…I might have to dry the silky gel and 14 in one for that extra hold. Thanks for the pictures, that is all the proof this naturalista needs. :)

  • Jas

KInky Curly totally sucks on my hair!!! It flakes my hair and leaves it nasty!! Ugh.. I’ve tried Eco Gel to slick my hair in a ponytail and all it did was leave my hair wavy and defined my curls… In a twist out Eco Gel is my friend!!!

  • Cherie

I almost choked on my grape when I read that some viewers said you looked like Frederick Douglas with the Eco Styler Gel! I was laughing so hard that my son came to see what was so funny. I’m sad to report that he laughed as well (he’s 8 so most things are funny!) However, he thought you looked good with the Kinky Curly! And he knows natural hair because of he is a fellow curly as well. Boy, I needed that laugh today!

  • http://www.facebook.com/DessertDiva1998 Teresa Dames Crawford

I just used Eco Styler with Argan Oil on Monday for the first time. I used it on damp hair. Before using it I did my research. Most folks advised to use a small amount and to seal it with a cream to prevent the ‘crunch’. I used a very small amount of As I Am Double Butter Cream (first time using this as well) on each twist. I have to say I really like it!! My twist out was really well defined and my hair was so soft!! I think successful use absolutely involves a cream with it. But I’m thrilled!! My husband even commented on my cute hair!! The Eco Styler also helped with elongating my hair. That’s not a major issue for me, but it did work!! I’ll be retwisted tonight with just a touch of Double Butter cream. Can’t wait to see tomorrow’s results!

  • Malaika07

Gel doesnt work on my hair, not even when I had a relaxer.I dont like the hard, crunch feeling.

  • Mikeal C

Ecostyler gel works amazingly for my hair. ppl always ask me did i rod my hair when i wear my wash and go bc it’s that defined. However there is one section in the front of my head Tht never curls up

  • http://www.facebook.com/afton.oneal1 Afton H Oneal

eco styles never has worked for me. i’m going to try the kinky curly custard. my hair felt horrible, even when it was soaking wet, so it’s a thumbs down for me.

  • Vanillabu

I’ve had bad experiences with eco style gel also and I hate the feeling it leaves on my hair. Only good for slicking down my sides for me, I haven’t tried curly curling custard but I may buy some. Tried curly curling cream by Taliah Waajid and it does a good job, but leaves way too much build up.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Pettibear Petunia Chmiel

Jenell, that Frederick Douglas comparison had me giddy for some reason! Then I went and watched the video and nearly peed my pants.! At least you have a sense of humor about the sometimes “creative” outcomes we get from products. I was able to get definition with the Eco Styler gel, but found that the Kinky Curly Curling Custard, while really defining my hair and making it shine, I had NO hang time whatsoever and had to wear a puff–major shrinkage. I will try it again though now that my hair is a bit longer.

  • Kameeka Burke

nope, eco styler was not for me, im actually looking to give mines away and the fact that i got another in this months curlbox was just a big no for me.

  • Vee

I use Eco styler olive oil regularly and I can make my wash & go stretch for 5 days….

I used KCCP but I don’t like the hold it gives my hair. I’m looking for a pudding of some sort that will give the same, or similar curl definition as Eco styler, but isn’t as damaging….

    Any suggestions curlies?
    :-)

  • http://twitter.com/LaNecia LaNecia Nixon

I always have crunchy hair with the Eco Styler, no matter the formulation, which doesn’t bother me too much but i’ve never been able to get second day hair because it frizzes…until…

I recently purchased As I am Leave In Conditioner and used it under the Eco-Styler Argan formulation…LOVE. I applied the gel using the shingling method. I have 4a/4B VERY tightly COILED HAIR AND THIS MADE MY CURLS GO BANANAS! Not only that, I was able to pineapple my hair at night (barely chin length so not a lot of tying up to do) and get not only 2 but 4 day hair. So, today, I’m trying the Styler (Olive Oil since I ran out of the Argan kind), with some Olive Oil added to see if I can obtain the same results. Being able to get the style to last more than one day is huge for me, i’ll take the crunch factor if I have to…the question remains however, do I have to?

I’ve also got some Curls Defining Jelly (combined with the ESG to add some weight) that my hair laughed at before, I’lll be curious to see if the leave in makes a difference.

  • http://twitter.com/dezireme2 Desiree Dow

Hahahahahaha, I’m so sorry about your hair, hahahahaha but that Fredreick Douglass comment put me over, hahaha! Pheww. But, as a fellow 4Bish, lol, I have to say I loveeees me some Eco Styler Gel w/Olive Oil (green jar). I’m learning tho what works for one person really won’t for others. I must add though, I did the B.C. 4 months ago, therefore my hair is not as long as yours (will post how my hair looks now) so that could be another reason why the Eco Styler Gel works wonders for me. I truly enjoy your videos and you are hilarious! You make my day :o)

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Haha!!!

  • IzzyBashir

I put the two products up against each other and came out with the same conclusion. If I want to wear my hair in a ponytail I use Eco. If I want curls I use the Custard. I’ll have to try to curl souffle.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      :-)

  • young&natural94

Hi! I haven’t tried a wash n go yet, but I am hoping to try it soon. A lot of people with 4a & b hair like mine have used Eco Styler Gel Olive Oil and said that it works really well. Their hair doesn’t have a crunch, it’s not flaky, or hard and so it makes me want to try the ESG first to see. I think that maybe for some people they might need to find a leave-in conditioner that works really well with the ESG and the turn out might be different. From watching YT and reading the comments it seems people use different leave-ins that might effect their turn out of the wash n go. I really enjoyed your video and learned from it! This weekend I will be going shopping for products to try my wash n go. Hopefully I will get a good turn out, if not that’s okay I can simply try again with other products..! = )

  • http://www.facebook.com/jjoyousjane Sunshine Sally

the look on your face is priceless on the still shot for the youtube video :)

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100001105132424 ProverbsThirtyone Sista

LOL Eco Styler is my go to product for Wash and Go’s. LOL I use the olive oil formula. I use a leave in conditioner to layer it and include some castor oil for softness. If used by itself it will dry hard, but with leave in and oil it will have a softer touch, especially in more humid climates. Oh and for the record I have high porosity 4B/C hair.

I just used Eco Styler mixing it with castor oil and coconut oil and it isn’t hard at all. I actually like the look — more distressed fro then the curl definition I usually aim for. However, I will stand by my Uncle Funky’s Daughter curl keeper with Deva Curl Heaven in Hair diluted as a leave in. That combo gives my Wash and Go hair considerable curl definition and I am a 4B.

The ECO Styler Olive Oil gel (green top) worked great for me. Now granted underneath, I used Curls Unleashed leave in and Take Command Curl Defining Cream; but I’ve used these two before and gotten NO curl definition. So for me personally, adding a generous amount of ECO styler on top gave me the best wash and go ever that lasted 6 days (I had to mist with water every morning) that I could literally shake and go. I’ve never used KKCC so I can’t compare.

I’ve learned that it’s best to have plenty of moisture underneath the eco styler. i use some conditioner and whipped Shea butter. i got my best wash and go ever

  • wawa

it work’s in my hair and it’s cheap, I only use it in the summer time.

I think that eco styler gel defines shorter hair better. just a inference from what I’ve seen. does anyone else agree?

  • MakedaX

Your videos and expressions are hilarious…LOL! I was using the eco styler gel for wash-n-gos. I did not like how “stiff” my hair would feel; however, after letting the gel settle and applying some other oil (tea tree, coconut or whatever), my hair would soften a bit. However, I’m not a fan of using the gel throughout my entire head, especially since my hair has been growing. I will use it if I need a “last minute hairstyle,” to smooth edges or pull my hair back in the front, but not for 2-strands or twistouts, just doesn’t work for me. I prefer more “buttery” products, if that made any sense. teehee

How do I determine what grade my hair is?

  • Dee Madscientist

EcoStyler Gel and Kinky Curly Curling Custard are two totally different products which would yield completely different results. Misinformation is a terrible thing. EcoStyler Gels are based on Carbomer (fixative that gives the hold) as most Styling Gels are. Kinky Curly Curling Custard is based on Pectin (also a fixative but completely different from Carbomers). Two totally different products. This is not to say EcoStyler Gels do not define curls as it has been named the top selling gel for Natural Hair for the past three years in a row by Naturally Curly.

Eco gel makes my hair a hot mess period. Its just not everyone I don’t care how many jars they sell. Heck they sold me one and it sits in the cabinet wasting away because to the failed attempts on my hair.

I have a three grades of hair, my nape, temple, and some places in the front are 4a (borderline 4c) with very little curl definition when wet. The Eco styler on those sections of my hair did nothing for it, i found that i had to finger coil in order to get the definition i craved. On the other hand, the other parts of my hair is made up of 4b and 4a curls. and The Eco does wonders in creating distinct curls (with the help of a Denman brush). If you have curly hair, it doesn’t so much define the curls but limits frizz and clumps the curls safely together. I found the longer my hair got the more the Ecostyler was my saving grace when it came to showing off my curl pattern.

Loooooool when you said one of your subscribers said you looked like Fredrick Douglass and then I watched the vid, I was laughing from like the midway point until the end. Thanks for this vid cos I’m kinda getting fed up with my hair (natural one year-ish) but it’s taught me to laugh when a hairstyle doesn’t work out and I look a hot mess. Plus we have a similar hair type so it gave me hope for when that length comes in. It’s taking a while cos I’m basically coming from nothing but here’s hoping. You are really beautiful btw :)

  • Joy

I can’t stop laughing at the Frederick Douglass comment. My hair hates eco styler gel too. Flakes regardless of what I do and leaves a white residue. It does define my curls but I don’t want it to look dirty lol

  • jess

Same here! I have short 4a hair. Eco styler makes my hair look just like yours! Doesn’t help lay down my edges either I don’t know why.

  • Shea C

I used the eco styler gel oto do my first wash and go and it defined my curls. Im going to stay I have 4a hair. At first nothing was really happening. But once I added more gel it helped. it just made my hair crunchy. I’ll try another method if I do a wash and go again.

  • Latifah

As a wash and go, Eco Styler (olive oil) is best for looser curls like Type 3. If you have Type 4 hair, you’re going to have to do a twist or braid out. I love EcoStyler bc it doesn’t leave any residue, and generally leaves hair touchable (once it’s dried).

As for laying down edges, I think the protein Eco Styler (the black container w brown gel), is best for Type 4s.

  • shayna

I used Eco Styler gel on my hair (4c) because I too was told by one of my natural friends to try it. It worked on my hair but I can’t use too much of it or my hair looks a mess, I found it looked best when i used my leave-In conditioner and couconut nut oil with it. It works with my braidouts than my twist outs (for god knows why).
