Wearing Thick Natural Hair Under a Hat

Try stuffing your AFRO under a hat and then walk out the door.

I guarantee more than a few folks will look at you crazy. LOL

Wearing a hat with natural hair can be a very humorous feat because your natural hair is much more voluminous than your straight relaxed hair was. This new luxurious volume, looks great when you wear your hair out in an afro, twist out, braid out, bantu knot out et al. But when you need your hair to fit under a hat, all that volume has got to go.

For me, I prefer to put my hair in twists. Doing so allows my hair to lay flat when pulled back into a pony tail. I put all of my twists into a bun.

For short hair

Moisturize your hair and then put them in two strand twists or braids.  Pin twists/braids down to lay as flat as possible. Cover hair with a bonnet or satin scarf.

For medium length hair

Moisturize your hair and then put them in two strand twists or braids.  Pin twists/braids down to lay as flat as possible. Or you can put your twists into pin curls. Or Pull hair down into a pony tail. Cover hair with a bonnet or satin scarf.

For long hair

Moisturize your hair and then put them in two strand twists or braids.   Pull hair down into a pony tail or Bun. Cover hair with a bonnet or satin scarf.

The best “hat hair” for me was when i had locs or a TWA. I haven’t had the same success since. Now, I’m just waiting for length so that I can try again. I purchased a really cute hat last summer but didn’t feel like it looked jjust right. Summer is coming soon again so…we’ll see!

I have always loved hats. When I went natural about 2 years ago I could not figure out to make them work. I eventually made them work for me. If you want to see how just check out my video on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YytWZew8ROQ

When my sister and I went natural, we had the same problem with wearing beanies with our hair. On top of it, I have a big head. We took the problem to my mom, who has been crocheting since we were born. Tada, Jhari Designs was born! We style many of our beanies with extra room in the crown and specially designs brims to hold your big ‘fro, dreds, locs, and braids !! They look great with bangs and chunky earrings.
