Top 5 Tips to Keep Your Closet Unique
My closet is one of those things that I have a love/hate relationship with. I love it when I find the cutest outfits, but I hate it when I feel like I have nothing to wear. Or when you have the moment that you see someone else in your new favorite item. I recently felt the burn in an instant “who wore it better” battle and immediately decided that I need to customize my closet. You can customize your closets to be unique enough to keep your pieces from being copied, but popular enough to keep you trendy. Here are 5 steps to keep your closet unique:
Thrift
Thrifting is a really fun way to keep your closet unique. You can visit local vintage stores, the Salvation Army, or raid your older family members’ closets to find cool vintage pieces to add to your wardrobe. This is also good for finding “staple pieces” (another step) that will be popular for seasons to come.
Find Your “Signature” Style
Finding your signature style is the most in depth step of this process. For some, it may be obvious or easy to find but for others this may prove to be a very difficult task. Finding your signature style is basically finding what piece of clothing you love the most. It can also be finding what ‘look’ you love the most on yourself. For me, that signature is wearing cardigans and boots. Cardigans are my number one obsession and my signature piece. In the Fall, which is my favorite season for this purpose only, I pair my cardigans with jeans and boots to create my “signature look.” I have everything from ankle booties to thigh highs that give an extra edgy look to my classic cardigan style.
DIY Projects
Do It Yourself projects are one of the best ways to keep your closet unique. This has to be my favorite because what you create can’t be duplicated. Others may try to make something similar but it will never be exactly what you have. You can do things like adding studs to the collar of your shirt or turning your favorite pair of jeans into your new denim shorts. No matter what you do, just remember, you did it yourself and no one else can get it; it is YOUR designer exclusive.b
Buy Staple Pieces
Buying staple pieces is the investment side of this process. You will invest your time and money into this step but it will definitely pay off in the end. Over time, when you find that one piece that never goes out of style, you buy it. Be sure to take care of these items. They will definitely come in handy for years to come. Now when I say staples, I don’t mean t-shirts and tank tops. Staples are the essentials that everyone should have; the pieces that don’t go out of style. The pencil skirt, blazers, the little black dress, and classic Rayban sunglasses are all staple pieces.
Participate in Style Swaps
Style swaps are parties that women hold to trade items from their closet for pieces from other women’s closets. This is a cool way to make your closet unique because it helps you clear out things you don’t need and get things that you loved on your friends. They are usually held in smaller groups with close friends. This is the more social way to mix up your closet. Get some drinks and snacks together, invite some friends over, and swap away!
