Small Afro Updo with Twists Hairstyle

By Jenell — July 04, 2010
I was inspired by one of my YouTube Natural Hair sisters to try another new style.

How to Achieve this Style

I conditioned my hair with Giovanni Smooth As Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner.  Then I applied Organics Root Stimulator Mayonnaise (deep conditioner) to my hair and detangled my hair (separated into 4 sections).   I put my plastic cap on and sat under the dryer for 30 minutes.  Rinsed mayonnaise out with cool water.  I added my WeRockRoots RockSTAR oil to my hair and then some Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie
I parted my hair into 6 sections (Straight down middle and then separated the front, middle, back of each side) in order to blow it out.  I used the medium setting on my blow dryer and the wide teeth comb attachment.  It took me about 30 minutes to blow dry my hair.
After blow drying, I sectioned off the top of my hair into the desired section I wanted.  I basically sectioned off my entire left side all the way over to right above my right eye.  I held it in place with hair clips.  This large section of hair would be two strand twisted into single twists to create the waterfall look you see in the pics.
After sectioning off the hair I parted my hair, applied Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie to the parted hair, combed it through from root to time, and then began flat twisting my hair from bottom up.  I wanted the twists to go in curved pattern so I did my best to part them, but it was very difficult to get my parts straight in the back. I had to use a large hand mirror and lots of energy.  They aren’t as straight as a professional but it works for me.
After flat twisting the entire back from right to left, I two strand twisted the hair that was sectioned off in the beginning.
To preserve the style, I pinned the single twists down and then covered my hair with my wrap sleep band and my satin bonnet.
