Choosing YOUR Right Colors

By SheRea — March 14, 2012

While we’d all like to believe that we can wear anything: any color, any cut, any shape, that is just not the case honey. Now, I am not telling you to limit yourself and your fashion possibilities, but I do want you to keep in mind that there are just some colors that give you that “umph” you have been searching for.

Take me for example. I tend to shy away from browns, especially the ones that are very similar to my skin complexion. I am a firm believer that colors are meant to accentuate your skin or act as a pop of contrast against your skin tone. I love coral… It is a pinkish-orange color and it just brightens me up.

The Caucasian costumer (someone who makes costumes) at my university once told me, “SheRea, yellows and oranges are made for black women!” I laughed hysterically, but she was definitely on to something. Think about how beautiful women of color look in such colors and these colors allow our skin to glow.

You should know that women of color are usually considered Winter Tones or Autumn Tones. Winter Tones have blue, red or pink undertones, while Autumn Tones have golden, warm yellow undertones. Remember, that human beings are impossible to be boxed in so don’t feel like you HAVE to choose one.  Personally, I consider myself to be a Winter/Autumn! If you are having trouble figuring out which tone you are think of Viola Davis and Tracee Ellis Ross.

Here’s some color suggestions from Miranda Matthews with Exclusive London.

Winter/deep tones
Winters should wear colours that are sharp, stark and clear. White, black, blue, red and magenta/cerise pink all go well with winter complexions. For lighter colours, wear icy tones rather than pastels e.g. turquoise or teal rather baby blue. Avoid subdued tones like beiges, biscuits and dusky terracottas.

Autumn/warm tones
People with autumn or warm skin tones should select colours with golden undertones, like camel, beige, orange, gold and dark brown. Avoid colours with blue tones, like navy or indigo. White is a good colour but should be worn with another colour e.g. couple a white dress with gold or orange accessories.

I hope this helps girls!

Here’s some photos of me in my favorite colors.

So what tone are you, an Autumn or Winter ? PLEASE DISH: Have you been wearing YOUR right colors?
