Bring the Sexy Back: Add Hair Accessories to Your Look

By SheRea — March 28, 2012

Hey Naturalistas!

We all have to admit that natural hair is DOPE, FIERCE, and FABULOUS! Our kinks, curls, and coils are beautiful on their own, but hair accessories can even elevate our hair’s beauty and spruce up our style. I have been meaning to incorporate more hair accessories into my wardrobe to really add that final touch, but I’ve been slacking. Don’t worry, I recently made some purchases that will kick start my hair accessory game!

There are SO many options out there for accessorizing the hair. There are hair flowers, bows, scarves, pins, clips, chains, and a bunch of others. Let’s be real, the options are endless. Hair accessories can be particularly fun for women who just did the Big Chop (BC) or are rocking their TWA (Teeny Weeny Afro). These accessories give you that glam look you have been searching for. Look at some throw back photos of Jenell fashioning hair accessories during the days when she rocked a TWA. CLICK HERE and HERE. You can even READ her article on accessorizing your TWA.

I’ve tried to enhance my look throughout my journey with hair accessories!

Want to incorporate hair accessories into your look? Here’s how:

1. You can always buy hair accessories from your local beauty supply stores or from stores such as Claire’s, Icing, Forever 21, etc. These stores sell cute and inexpensive hair accessories. You can also splurge on beautiful handmade hair accessories from Sarenzo Beads, Hair Flowers, Flowers from Fatima, and Tomaka’s Twists.

2. Thrift stores sell scarves/handkerchiefs for little to nothing that you can then transform into turbans and bows. Stock up on funky prints and colors and get to accessorizing.

3. Watch Youtube. This is the generation of Youtube and like hair styling videos, there are also videos on creating hair accessories. Check out IKnowLee’s turban tutorial HERE or Charyjay’s video on her bow RIGHT HERE.

4. Don’t sleep on hats, beanies, and berets. Not only are they GREAT to rock on a bad hair day, but they can also be cute when worn with the right outfit (be sure to wear a satin/silk head covering underneath when possible!)

Ladies, get to rocking those hair accessories just in time for the summer!

Please check the Hatsome site, when you click shop, shop online or any category of hat style it returns message: THERE ARE NO PRODUCTS IN THIS CATEGORY.  There are no hats to be viewed. Good idea bad site.

I’m sorry love. I am not sure I know what you are referring to. Where in the article in this website referenced?

Awesome article! I have to be on the lookout for cute accessories whenever I go out. I find they can be helpful to camouflage hair thinning issues in the crown area.

Good tip!!! My crown has been breaking lately!

I just did the big chop two days ago. I’m bit self conscious to wear it as is because my edges were damaged so bad they’re very thin. Keep in mind when I say I cut my hair I have a dark Cesar probably a Lil more hair. Do you think hair bands would help conceal the thinness or should I wig it out till my hair grows back a bit more

      Try it out and see.
