My Natural Hair Regimen

(As of April 2011)
On Saturdays….
I Shampoo and Condition my hair with one of my many shampoo and conditioners. But recently I’ve been rotating between the following product lines – Shea Moisture Yucca & Baobab or Shea Moisture Organic Shea Butter, or Design Essential. I do use many other products, but these are my main 3 that I’ve been using recently. 
(I will keep you all updated when things change.)

I detangle my hair as I apply the conditioner using this technique:


I rinse the conditioner out with the twist still in my hair. I squeeze the twists to make sure the water is getting through the twists and to make sure the product is getting out of my hair (yes some of the twists loosen). When it’s all rinsed out I apply Deep Conditioner. 

Day 5 Braid Out

I have 3 deep conditioners that I use. Most often I used the Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque. Sometimes I use the Organic Root Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise. And on a few occasions I use the Organix Coconut Repair Deep Treatment. I usually leave my deep Conditioner in my hair for a few hours (Sometimes overnight). Leaving my deep conditioner in for more then 3 hours leaves my hair uber soft!


I rinse out the deep conditioner, loosen the twists, and then I Moisturize and Pamper my hair. This video shows you how I apply the following products to my hair.

Flat Twist Out

I use the following products (in this exact order) Shea Moisture Yucca & Baobab Thickenning Mist, Tropical Traditions Coconut Oil, Shea Moisture Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner, and Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie OR my Shea Butter Mix.


After all products have been applied I will set my hair in one of the following.

15-20 Two Strand Twists – then I’ll rock a Twist Out

15-20 Braids – Then I’ll rock a braid Out
10-15 Flat Twists – then I’ll rock a Flat Twist Out

Part two

I untwist the next mornin and I Retwist/braid/flat twist my hair at night to preserve the curl pattern. If I don’t have time to reset my hair I will put my hair in Mini Pineapples.

On Wednesdays….

I Cowash my hair using any of my many conditioners using this technique.
After I cowash, I Moisturize and Pamper my hair the same way that I do on Saturdays. After all products have been applied I will set my hair in one of the sets listed above (Two Strand Twists, Braids, or Flat Twists) like I do on Saturdays.

I give my hair so much LOVE and my growth shows the LOVE and time I’ve given my hair.
If you have 4b kinky/curly/coily hair like me, this regimen may give you extreme softness, moisture and shine!

    Hey sis! i LOVE LOVE LOVE all of your tutorials and blogs…i recently started using the shea moisture and it is awesome on my hair…One question would you recomend leaving conditioner on your hair overnight if you have colored it…i colored my hair last summer—and have regretted it! my hair has not been the same since..i am currently using your pamper method and that has been great! i need soooo much moisture now…. i am going to start taking that biotin supplement like you stated in the vid…i will keep you posted!

      You can definitely leave a deep conditioner in your hair over night.

      Im glad you are loving my old regimen.

      The biotin is great. If you start breaking out, get a lower dosage. In fact, start will 1000mcg or less to be safe.

        I have been taking biotiin wfor a while I take 7500mcg and it works great for me.

      I have colred hair too and deeply regret it; however, I will be really pampering my hair to get it healthy again.  My hair tends to stay dry due to the color.  I don’t want to chop my hair again, I will just let thr color grow out this time.  Yes, I take 7500mcg Biotin.  I have been taking biotin for a long time, along with other vitamin supplements.  I beleive in vitamins.

    I really enjoy the tutorials.  I took the time today to shampoo, rinse, add deep conditioner after the 4 sections and twist the strands.  i will be rinsing so i can moistoirize and twist my hair for the look tomorrow.  I have been looking for different styles and a better way to take care of my hair.  I’m excited about the new beginning!

    Hi there! I swear by Design Essentials! I think I’ll have to get the curl stretch cream and try that with my twists. I’m undergoing a growth process and was wondering if you have any more advice. I’ve been natural longer while I have done things before to grow my hair, maybe a new trick or two will boost the growth. For instance, I made a scalp oil focused on growth, used Infusuim 23 when I washed and daily then another leave in with styling products. I am not so much of a PJ anymore after using Design Essentials. Thanks! :-)

      My advice for growth is give your body and your hair TLC and your hair will grow. Check out our health section for a wealth of info on things you can do internally to grow your hair long and strong.

      Yes this was my TWA regimen. The only difference is the twists and braids. My hair wasn’t long enough for that.
      I think this would be a good regimen to follow while transitioning but the mid week co washes might be a bit much stress on your hair.

      When you pineapple your hair, you put it in a loose ponytail on top of your head (visualize a pineapple). Mini pineapples are for women with shorter hair, you put your hair in ponytails all over like 4-6

    Just wondering…when it comes to your styling. are you manipulating your hair everyday? like when it comes to the different styles like re twisting and night and styling in the morning.. do you think that bothered your growth any or was it fine when you stuck to this regimen?

      Hey love,
      Yes I retwist at night. It actually supported my hair growth because my hair was put away instead of just going to bed with my hair loose. When I retwist and rebraid my hair, im gentle. I sometimes add moisture to my hair.

      Hey love,

      For daily moisture, I just apply the products again. My hair doesn’t usually need to be moisturized daily. More like every 2-3 days.
      I may or may not spritz my hair with something and then apply leave in, oil, and moisturizer.

    I just recently found your site and it is now part of my daily regimen! My TWA is growing out and the WNG is no longer working for me — very fuzzy and I need something new. Your tutorials for type 4 hair is perfect; most of the sites only show pics of naturals with type 3 hair or its way long…no real instructions on how they got there. I’m going to try your braid out on my hair this week — wish me luck!

I BCed July ’12 and my hair is doing really well. SInce I discovered your channel a month ago, I’ve been following your regime as my hair type seems quite similar to yours. I live in the UK so got a friend of mine to buy and post me the Shea Moisture products you recommend so highly.
