I wanted to know if you know of any hot oil treatments with castor oil, and also do you find that some parts of your hair grow longer than others? My sides and back come to the same point, just a little past my collar bone but my sides used to be at my chin, so they seem to grow faster, or rather retain length better than my back, but I can't really see why that would happen, thanks for this challenge, I was looking for something else to keep me motivated!

I had to buy it from whole foods.  Every year I go natural and I just get tired of it. This year I have been natural for over a year and my hair hasn't grown very much at all do to stress and climate changes. I am in Louisiana and the weather here is super crazy but I am so up for the challenge. I will have to post some better pics soon. I so excited but every one in the challenge seems to have long hair already.

  • MJ5150

Hello! MJ here I will be using NOW solutions 100% pure castor oil. Got it from Whole Foods. A friend of mine used the cold pressed, so I will be switching to that if necessary. Front is nose length, sides are chin length and back is right at shoulder length. I will be using all over as my crown is shorter than everywhere else, my sides are a little thin from braids and weave, and I would like to achieve whatever length I can, my hair has never been long! :(

I will be using the Cold Pressed and Cold Processed Castor Oil by Home Health that I found at my local Whole Foods store. I definitely have a TWA. I just cut my hair on Jan 8, 2012 so it is very short and does not touch my eye brows yet in the front, the back extends the full length of my neck but does not go past it, and the sides touch the bottom of my ear lobes. The lengths are only established when pulled and stretched. I will use castor oil as a pre-poo (now that I know how), on freshly washed hair. I will oil my scalp while it’s wet, twist the hair and seal the ends with the oil. I will also use it on my dry hair as a moisturizer and for shine twice during the week.

  • rgully

I will document length once a week and styles daily. Below are a few snaps of Me and My Hair earlier today. Look at the last picture…see how fluffy and cottony my hair looks??? It actually felt that exact way thanks to Miss Jessie’s Curly Meringue!

    23hrs 47mins until the challenge begins!!! =

I will be using it on my scalp 2-3 times a weak. I will use it to seal daily.

       Check-in Week 2
      1. Where do you live? Central Florida2. How did you do during week 1 of the Castor Oil Challenge? Did you follow through with your goals? Plans for this week? I followed through and sealed my ends at least three times. I also prepooed with castor oil. I plan to seal every other day this week as a goal. How do you feel about Castor Oil in comparison to other oils you’ve used? Its much thicker. I feel confidant to use it to seal ends with protective styling. I would be less comfortable using it on my ends if I had a twist out. It seems too sticky/heavy for my fine tresses. I think how ever it will be extremely effective in sealing moisture in and keeping my ends protected.

      • Stephanie Gibson Watkins

         Week 3 Check-in
        1. How often do you wash your hair? What are your staple products?I wash my hair about every two weeks in the winter and every week in the summer. I use Kinky Curly Knot Today and Curling Pudding. I wash & deep condition with Shea Moisture. I always have Olive Oil on deck. I use castor oil in Kimmaytube leave in conditioner recipe.2. How did you do last week (week 2)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I did pretty week. I know I sealed with castor at least 3 times this week. My challenge is that I am in a styling rut.3. Do you think you see a difference in thickness or length yet? How
has your hair been responding to the consistent castor oil usage?I have really been more purposeful with caring for my ends. I have kept my hair in protective styles as well as sealing with the castor oil and I think I have observed less single strand knots. I ends feel more moisturized and less brittle. I will have to measure my hair in order to see a length difference.

        • Stephanie Gibson Watkins

1.Why did you decide to do away with chemical relaxers and embrace your natural hair?Natural hair goes more with my personality and lifestyle. I am like a urban bohemian in many ways. I try to stick close to mother nature for as many of my physical needs as possible. While in undergrad I decided, I no longer wanted to rely upon a chemical or hairstylist. I always liked the look of curly hair. I love the versatility of being natural because you can be curly or straight. Currently, I want to achieve waist length hair. Being natural will allow my hair to be as long and strong as possible in order to obtain this goal.2. How did you do last week (week 3)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?I’ve followed through with my original goal to seal with castor oil at least 3 times a week. My one challenge I’m dealing with is utilizing the castor oil with my flexrod set this week. It seems like it will be kind of heavy for the ends.3. I am retaining my length really well. I can really see my length with my current flexrod set. I think the castor oil is an effective sealant.3.26.12 MeasurementsFront- 12.5Side- 12.5Back- 11.5

             Week 5 Check in
Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?1.My relationships have not changed at all since going natural because I have been natural for over 10 years. This is the only way many people know me. Friends and family who have been around for years compliment me or don’t mention my hair. As mentioned before, I am a natural type of person so my hair is only an extension of that. :)2. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I’ve done really well. I believe I actually sealed every other day which I love. I don’t recall any challenges this week.
            3. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in
thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are
they growing in?I actually pulled out the tape measure last week. 3.26.12 measurements- Front- 12.5 Side- 12.5 Back- 11.5 2.29.12 measurements- Front- 11.5 Side- 12    Back- 11So as you can see I really gained some length in the front wow! This is really good. I have never been this purposeful in charting growth.

            Week 6 Check in
            1. We all love being natural, but is there anything about being natural that you are “so over”?My hair is so soft that most of my styles don’t have staying power. Also, I want to try new products to see if other ones will help me make a style last but I don’t want to risk wasting the money.2.How did you do last week (week 5)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?I am doing well. I believe I have sealed my ends every other night. I just have the challenge of holding myself accountable to the castor oil sealing routine.

          • http://www.facebook.com/stephanie.b.gibson Stephanie Gibson Watkins

             Week 7 Check in
Who are your natural hair crushes? There are some youtubers who have wonderful hair- Kimmaytube, Ambrosia, Haircrush, Longhairdontcare, Whoissugar & Beautiful Brown Baby Doll, just to name a few.Have you been giving this challenge your all? I have put forth a strong effort. As a working mom of an eleven month old I cannot spend as much time on my hair as I would like. How did you do last week (week 6)? I have done well. I sealed my hair at least three times this week. The challenge keeps me vigilant.Did you follow through with your goals? Yes. Any challenges thus far? Due to limited energy and time, I have not had many cute styles lately. I have mostly rocked a bun on the top of my head with large twists. It’s not all that right now;)

          • http://www.facebook.com/stephanie.b.gibson Stephanie Gibson Watkins

            Week 8
            1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
I’ll just start from the last big chop, about 2 years ago. I have been natural for many years so I was familiar with my texture.

            2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I sealed at least 3 times. I also used the Kimmaytube leave-in conditioner after deep conditioning.

            3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
            Lavendar

I will post pics later as my hair is in a castor oil prepoo treatment now. Excited! Was using henna before but had breakage as I think it is heavy for my hair.
