Our girl Jill Scott is natural again!

YAY!

After sharing a pic on FB last night, I realized from the comments there were many naturalistas that didn’t even know Jill was relaxed. Wow! Where ya’ll been at?? A few folks said they noticed she was rocking a straighter do, but thought she was wearing a wig or a weave and there were a handful that reported they didn’t know she was relaxed mainly because they don’t keep up with pop culture. Okie, I can understand that.

The Relaxed Jill…Before this Big Chop

Now for those of you that didn’t know about her relaxed hair, in the September/October 2011 issue of Sophisticates Black Hair, actress and singer Jill Scott explains how she was natural for 20 years and she got bored with her hair. Jill had been rocking her hair in an asymmetrical short cut wit close shaven sides. Jill believes that no matter what state her hair is natural or relaxed she is loving the short look as it is freeing, shows off her beautiful face, and lighter.

During that interview Jill stated,

I don’t think my hair necessarily defines everything about me… natural hair has to be loved. You have to moisturize a great deal. You have to condition. You have to brush it. You have to be really proactive with it. It’s a beautiful thing but it’s a lot of hard work as well.

Can I get an Amen?

She went on to say

You don’t need straight hair. You don’t need natural hair. What you do need is the have the hair that suits you and your personal style. It’s about having confidence in your presentation. That’s the most important thing.

The Natural Jill…Before the Relaxer

Jill was natural for almost my entire lifetime and she grew her gorgeous hair to a length that many of us are working very hard to obtain.

Jill has always been a hair crush of mine.
