How to Achieve a Wash n Go on Natural Hair

By Jenell — July 22, 2012

I never thought I would find a product to define my curls!

I spent the first entire year of my journey on a quest for curl definition and failed miserably, until I tried the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard and the Kinky-Curly Knot Today. These products helped to define and hold my tight, frizzy, kinky, curly, coily, Type 4B hair!

I can’t promise that they will work for you because our hair is different, but if you’ve failed miserably at achieving a wash and go with gel, like me, then you may want to give it a try. In fact, watch this video to see how miserably I failed with gel. LOL

Tools:

Butterfly Clips, Duck Bill Clips
Detangling Brush
Water bottle with water
Towel
Kinky-Curly Curling Custard
Kinky-Curly Knot Today Conditioner

Steps:

Shampoo and condition your hair. Leave your hair SOAKING WET.

Section off a very small section of your hair and apply the Kinky-Curly Knot Today Conditioner to the section. Detangle that section with your detangling brush. Apply the Kinky-Curly Curling Custard to that section and comb through the section using your hands only. Comb through with your hands a few times to all the product to smooth through the section and begin to enhance your natural curl pattern.

Continue these steps until your entire head is complete. Part your hair as desired. And then shake your head all around like a lunatic!

Then you are done.

Watch this video to see how I defined my hair.

I like their products, the leave-in works best for me :)

They are good! I like how the leave in works in my hair, but girllll I cant take the smell. It started when I was pregnant, now I still cant take it. but before that, I didnt mind! Is that weird?

I found them to be good products, but expensive

I agree. High price point but they are worth it to me bc nothing else works!!
Did you see my Eco styler gel tragedy?? Lol

Nice video.  After my big chop in Dec 2010 and for almost two years I had came to the conclusion that the Wash N Go was just not for me Coily hair UNTIL I tried the Curly Girl Method.  On day 2 my curls/coils was coming to life.  That was because 1) Moisture 2) elimination of silicone products and sulfates from my hair diet.

My hair is a nice texture and I am been natural for 7yrs…after having breast cancer…but my hair is naturally curly a drop of water or even heat from the summer months my hairs curls right up…I was going to the Dominicans and getting it blown out but my hair is so thin my hair can’t take the heat…so I wear it curly I use Marc Anthouy Strictly Curls, Shampoo Conditioner and styling lotion…but I find my hair dry and when I come it hair comes out or even if I run my fingers through my hair wet it comes out

I cant wait to BC so I can do my first wash and go, that is said but I love natural hair and I have been transitioning for almost 5 months and I am soooooo ready to BC

i could only do the ‘wash and go’ when my hair was really short..well now a wash and go is a recipe for disaster (tangled mess)

Its the only product that works for me when wearing my hair natural. Easy to purchase at Target too. I can’t complain about the price, it really kept my hair in great condition and it looks beautiful when I use the knot today.

I have these products and used them on my TWA, now that its a IBF (in-between fro) {not teeny but not long 4″} wash n’ gos or curl n’ gos just don’t look right… Like a jheri curl gone wrong… I’m waiting on longer hair! LOL

This product and procedure works fantastic until your hair dries. Then what? What products do you use to keep your nice, curl-defined hair soft?

My hair didn’t dry hard. It has some crunchiness but I didn’t mind.

I love this method with KK products when I want a looser curl wash n go. I use Ecostyler gel when I want tighter curls. In both cases there is a little crunchiness but it’s not dryness where it feels like straw. I’ve had that happen when using Macadamia Natural Oil curl cream!

This does work well! I just hate that i have to wet my hair everyday with it. If I go to sleep, the next morning my head is all flakes! It is annoying, but the product works. I didn’t even really need the knot today.

i attempted a wash and go the other night using some other products (I can’t remember

what they were called but I used them bc the tiny town I was in had NO kinky curly knot today products).. anyways.. it turned out OK but my curls were not very defined.. When I finally got back to civilization I went and purchased the kinky curly knot today custard and the leave in…

Long story short my hair turned out ALOT BETTER.. i am pretty sure I am going to use this whenever I wash and go…. My biggest struggle is trying to get the front of my hair parted and to actually stay in the right place.. and I guess i need more practice because this wash and go was more so a wash and stand and wait and do the hair for an hour and then go.. (Idk y i thought it wouldn’t take that long)… Here’s a pic
