1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

My answers:

1. I wasn’t shocked at all, I was in denial.  I spent so many hours watching YT videos before my BC that I romanticized the situation. I knew that my hair was very course and that I probably would have no curl pattern. I can remember distinctly telling my cousin that “we can’t do natural because we have African hair”. Our parents are both from Liberia, Africa, so I’m being dead serious when I say we have African Hair. LOL Anyways, even knowing this, I imagined having Traccee Ellis Ross Hair or Elle Varner hair, I know it was foolish, but I didn’t expect this.  Well regardless of what kind of hair I didn’t have, I love my hair now!

2.  Last week was FAB!  I applied JBCO to my scalp, 4 nights. I didn’t prepoo this week, but instead did an all day deep conditioning using the Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Masque. When I rinsed out the masque, I rubbed coconut JBCO all over each section and then put my hair in 4 large braids for bed. I just love how soft my hair is.I sure did well as stated above. No challenges for me, I’m in this for the long haul.

Shea Moisture Anti-Breakage Masque Deep Conditioner3. I really love the coconut JBCO, smells like roasted coconuts! The lavender JBCO has a very feminine floral fragrance.

I made a quick video on how I deep condition, check out the video

     1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

I’m not yet fully natural, but I’m already a bit surprised at what texture I can see so far.  After having had perms since i was quite young, i just never knew what my natural hair looked like.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

    I did well.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

I’d like to win/try the Coconut JBCO since I like the scent of Coconuts.

  • MahoganyDST

When I first BC’d I knew I had a curl pattern but I was surprised by how tight and coiled my curls would get.  And the Shrinkage/elasticity oh MY Goodness that was a shocker.  I have embraced my shrinkage as my element of surprise, people will ask me if I cut my hair until I pull a curl down and their like Woooooow, but so am I sometimes lol.  I Absolutely love love love my hair texture, I have been extremely fortunate to only have to deal with one texture throughout my entire head as I hear other curlies talk about having to use different prods on their different textures.

Last week I did great I used castor oil in my DC as usual and oiled my scalp and sealed with it as well.  I didn’t fact any challenges.  I’m leaving for Jamaica in a little over a week so I have to get some bottles ready to take my castor oil and other prods on the go!

If I win a bottle of the JBCO, which I hope I do because I never win anything, I would like the coconut scented castor oil.  Coconut oil is definitely a staple oil of mine, my hair just loves it!

    • Karemel

I get that too:  major shrinkage, with surprisingly longer hair.

  • Symone Michelle

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
I was very surprised my my texture, I didn’t think I would have much of a curl pattern, but me seeing the little bit of curls forming from not getting a perm made me big chop lol, I got excited. My hair texture is surprising me more now because I have more of a wave pattern than curl! Love it either way =D

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I’m doing well! Like I said last week, castor oil s a staple, so I use it everyday now without even thinking about it, my hair LOVES it!

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? COCONUT! Lol

    Happy Friday!!! :D

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

I must admit I was also in denial.  I kept trying to accomplish the curl patterns I’d seen on looser curlies. But after my aha moment of how beautiful my multi textured hair could be I fell in love with being natural all over again. :)

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did the same. maintaining my little schedule of oiling my scalp with a massage every other night & sealing moisture on my ends.  And my hot oil treatment felt soooo good last weekend that I’m looking forward to doing it again tonight.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? Lavender

  • j1830291

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
Yes I was very shocked. My mother has the most beautiful curls. She went natural years ago without much effort and was against me cutting my hair off. I feel like my hair is constantly changing for the better. But I am still in denial. Like you Jenell I once dreamed about the curls that I would have. I love my hair but I am confused. I have curls at my scalp and when my hair dries the curls in my scalp are there but my ends are not defined. I do not believe that it is damaged. Some weeks are better than others. It’s funny because my dad like the fluff of my hair and as a family we debate how I got a combination of both parents. Haha.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
Yes! I am using my castor oil mix everyday. I have found the right amount that my hair likes. I used to put too much and it made my hair feel gross. Since it’s summer I need the added oils, so I use it everyday and I don’t have to worry about which days I used it. My scalp is now amazing! I used to have the flakiest scalp! Now it’s so healthy.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
I would like to win the JBCO Coconut. Two weeks ago I put in an order but they sent me coconut oil. I called the company and they said that they would send me a new label my email to return the product. It still has not happened.

    Jocelynn

P.S. – my healthy scalp. i’m so proud of it, it has come a long way. lol

    • Norkita White

I feel the same way about my scalp, when I my hair was relxed I have very bad dandrif and since I have become natural I haven’t seen any traces of dandrif!!!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Scalp looks great!

  • Tenika

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

Yes I was surprised about how curly my hair actually was. I had been receiving perms since I was in middle school and before that my mother would press my hair so I never knew what was hiding underneath. Looking at all of my curls I just stood in amazement and I still do especially on wazsh day.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I could have done better this week. I had a lot going on with work and struggled to remember to place the oil on my edges.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

I have never had any castor oil other than ones with no scent (regular). I would love to try the coconut castor oil simply because coconut oil has so many good qualities to the product for hair. I have fallen back in love with coconut oil as my pre poo.

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
~i actually was more like a little disappointed because it took my curl pattern and stuff to come out.  but now i can say now that my hair is trained i sit sometimes and just play in amazement at how i can just pull my lil strand of coil and it just springs back to it tightly coiled state , i am fascinated sometime by my texture.
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
~still in my protective style of Crochet braids but ia m doing very good at applying CO to my edges and on my scalp daily!!!! (YAY me!)
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
~i currently have the Lavender, probably wouldn’t mind having the Coconut.

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

I knew it was going to be coily but not this coily!!  LOL!!  But like Jenell, I’m loving it more everyday.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did well last week, i followed thru with my goals and no challenges.  I can’t believe its week 7.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

If I win I would like the coconut JBCO.

  • Onyinyedike

    1. i wasn’t surprised by the texture, what surprised me was the shrinkage, OMG! lol.Asides that i knew what to expect as i had very short natural hair in secondary school, 6 whole years.
    2. Last week was a struggle. As i mentioned in my last post, i have a new job which is quite demanding, but i am determined to do this. :) , i have my castor oil in an applicator bottle in my car now. long healthy hair, here i come!
    3. hmm…already have the regular JBCO, i would like to have the lavender JBCO.

    • NatashaP

Ah, the mega shrinkage, I know it so well, LOL.  I appreciate the volume the shrinkage/swelling gives me, but doggone it, sometimes I actually want my hair to look the same from morning until night . . . and THAT just ain’t happening, LOL.

      • onyinyechi uwakwemdike

        lol…..week 8 check in

  • IamboredSinger

    1. i was not very surprised just more excited. i imagined my hair to be kinkier, like a 4b, and i guess it is but more of a 4a. i was excited to see my natural hair after only having a relaxer for about 3 to 4 years. i  i was excited to play with my hair instead of always having braids.

2.i did pretty good last week, i followed through with all my goals and  am very excited. there has only been one challenge ….. i am running out of castor oil.

3.i would absolutely love to win any type of castor oil, but i would be most excited to win the coconut  jamican black castor because i love coconut oil and how it penetrates the shaft and how jamican black castor oil is thick and purifies the scalp.

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
I was pleasantly surprised! After years and years of mismanaging my hair, I truly believed that my damaged curls were my natural texture. Now approaching my one year healthy hair anniversary, I fall more and more in love with my hair! Like other naturals, I kick myself everyday for not doing it sooner; but better late than never! My curls were straggly, weak, and thin. I can’t believe how much my curls pop now! I definitely see the difference JBCO is playing in growing out my hair and keeping my curls soft and strong. I am looking forward to the protective style challenge for the fall, as I have been researching styles to maximize my growth this fall!
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I am continuing to do well. JBCO is now my main oil, occasionally accented with coconut oil. I used JBCO to oil my scalp 4 times this past week. I also continued to apply to my edges and eyebrows nightly. Now that I have figured out how best to apply it for my hair texture and style, JBCO has become my staple!
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? I have been using the regular JBCO since before the start of the challenge. I would love to give the Coconut JBCO a try!

  • http://www.facebook.com/zamora.brinkley Zamora Brinkley

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

I was not really really surprised I talked with my mom before I decided to go natural and she gave me some insight as to how my hair was when I was an infant. I do find it funny that my hair has returned to that state.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did better than ever. I am really inspired by the fact that my hair is REALLY growning. I will say I had an epic FAIL with my twist out last week. Its like it just made my curls angry. It is quite nice to see my hair back to its normal curly state.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
Coconut would be nice to try since I am addiced to Lavender right now lol!

I hope everyone is doing well with their challenge it is AMAZING to see so many people coming together to promote and support each other.

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
-I was suprised because I had been “chemically dependent” since I was 4, so  was always under the impression that my hair was “nappy” and tough to deal with. However, when I became fully natural I was surprised because it was tighly curled in some spots, wavy in some spots and coily in other spots, not “nappy”!!
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
-I did ok, I did neglect my hair for a few days because I was extremely busy with life, but I got back on track and my hair has since forgiven me.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
-I would like to win either the cocount because I love the smell or the lavender because that is what I am currently using and I like the smell and the slight tingle that it give my scalp.

    • MahoganyDST

Whew girl how do you do it with all them textures!

    • http://www.facebook.com/ericanneal Erica Neal

Me too! Thought my hair was sooo “nappy” cause it was so thick that I didn’t think I’d be able to manage it when it started to grow, but now I just love all the natural coils that I have!

  • http://twitter.com/lez_not No.

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

Yes because my mom had me in the whole “good hair/bad hair” thing so I was surprised that I actually had so curly/coily hair cause I thought that was “good hair” and I had “bad hair” . Now I know better and my mom is getting better.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

Yes yes yes. This week was great I was finally dealing with my hair directly and I used it on my edges which I think the micros messed up but they aren’t completely bald. No challenges, using it to seal and massage in my scalp :)

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
I’d be happy to win anything!! But I’d love to try the coconut im sure it smells amazing. But I’d be grateful for anything :)

  • Jameil Nganga

. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?Yes and no. I was natural up until I was 16 but my grandma pressed my hair every Saturday night so I never really got to know my natural texture. However, upon getting  relaxer I labeled myself a s too African to go natural (my father was Nigerian and I def got his hair lol). However, after I finally took the plunge I discovered that my hair isnt all that bad I can do soooo much with it becasue its so thick!

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
Last week was sucky for me. I didnt use at much JBCO as usual but Im making it for it this week though

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
Id want to win the Coconut scent…..its the only one I havent tried

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ER3D45M4M464TFNEDI3R4GVKIA Jae

    1. The only thing that surprised me was how beautiful my curl pattern was. I didn’t it would every curl.
    2. Last week went great. I’m still rocking my cornrow braids and it’s easier to apply my castor oil everyday, so I met my goal.
    3. Any of the oils would be nice, but coconut would be nice.

    • MahoganyDST

Yes I’ve been protective styling most of this challenge because I workout so much, so agree it does make it easier to apply the oil!

  • http://twitter.com/lexluxxe Ms. Ocean

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? Kind of, I wasn’t expecting to have gorgeous ringlets but I was surprised to feel and see tiny coils after my bc. I never saw my hair in any type of curly/coily state ever before my bc back in 2009 when I was 20. I grew up thinking of coils as naps. Once I got out of the mentality of grease and avoiding water, I really got to see my texture thrive and I never would have guessed it’d be this soft and coily.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I’m doing great. I think I’ve reached a milestone lol; I have my hair in about 8-10 twists as a daily protective style. Whereas I usually wear them only in the house at night because they were too short or just ugly to me. Now I actually like the length, it’s not too awkward. This is big for me because before I’d only been able to pull off mini twists but these are medium sized and take me less than the 30 minutes to put in. Plus, I went to the pool in them, then came home shampooed/conditioned/moisturized with them in. The process took all of 35 min including the shower, that’s huge for me lol.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? Lavender!

  • candisrainey

Off topic, it really took me 8 weeks to officially “register” for this forum…. all bad.

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?Yes actually I was… I’ve seen pictures of my hair as a child, but my mother has had me in perms since i was a child so when i went to college i kept up with the habit. When i finally decided to go natural, I was surprised to have curly hair. But now I wear it straight a lot, so no more curls :-( 2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?Yes I did, I oiled my scalp on the daily. I am wearing corn rows. Is daily too much ? My scalp was really itchy last week, don’t know if it was from the castor oil or braiding hair.3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?Hmmmm….. decisions decisions. Coconut.

  • michele liburd

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? No, because I figured my texture would be like or similar to my siblings or my parents.
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I did great. I didn’t oil my scalp with the jbco as I usually do because it makes my scalp too itchy and sore. I added it to my DC, ,prepoo, leave-in and I sealed my ends with it.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? Coconut, lol.

  • http://www.facebook.com/FayeV6g Faye Venable

I have to say that I was totally surprised by my texture.  I’ve been natural before but now at this stage of my life and living with gray hair, my hair is very soft and cottony at the crown of my head and the back (nape) is tighter – i don’t know how else to explain my hair hehehe.

Last week for me was uneventful no challenge or problem for me.  I applied jbco 2xs and did my edges 4xs

I’d love to win the coconut flavor/scent

  • Funkystarkitty50

     Check In Questions:

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
No, I figured that it would be kinky and not very curly.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Its the same routine and schedule–there is no change at all.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

Coconut sounds good. I love the smell!!

  • Tomi-chan

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? Not really because I wore braids, but I didn’t get many relaxers. I was surprised two years in that my hair could be 4b and silky soft as well. Just gotta use the right products!
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Sorta regret my mini haircut, but it needed to be done! My hair is growing out nicely thanks to JBCO. I’ve also incorporated weekly protein treatments. Just for the month though, don’t want to over do it.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? Lavender sounds heavenly!

  • Thianita Brown

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
I think I was.  Since I just transitioned kind of on accident, my texture kind of “crept up” on me. I just kept feeling my roots and playing with them, and then I realized that I didn’t want them to “go away”.  I didn’t see them as “beedee bees” or “naps”.  They were this comfy little kinks/curls that felt nice in my fingers and rolled around my fingertips.  They did actually express a natural coily curl pattern, and I decided I wanted that, so I just cut off everything that was pressed/not coily.
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I did really well last week.  I shampooed and did a treatment, then I co-washed at midweek and did a treatment, and did two other nighttime “steams” with a shower cap.  My hair was really soft this week, and I’ve got to check this length because in the middle of my back it actually looks much longer.  It’s nice and shiny but not greasy, and my edges are very happy.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
If I win I would like LAVENDER please!!!! I love that one (it’s the one I’m using now).

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=38902088 Ashley MyOpportunity Awaits-Hi

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? I was somewhat surprised, I thought at first my hair was going to be curlier than it was, since my first real cut in March I have been able to define my curl pattern more and I love it. I have about 2 different hair types; the back is 3c and the middle and front are more 4a.
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? This past week was about the same, no new challenges.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? I would love to win the coconut JBCO. Right now I use the coconut and lavender mixed together but the coconut smells so good!!

  • ELA

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? – This is my 2nd time going natural. I did a BC and was surprised by the different textures that I have on one head. I do not remember it being this way the first time.
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? – No challenges for me, other that I’ve had extensions in for 6 weeks so I miss my hair.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? – I wouldn’t mind just the regular JBCO. It’s the only one I’ve tried. I love lavender so woulddn’t mind that either :)

  • Corylc39

     1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?  I was very surprised because it was so coily and beautiful!!!  I was also surprised at how easy it was to manage ;)

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?  I didn’t do so well last week due to illness, but I’m feeling better and back on track!!

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?   I would love to win the Coconut please!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=555974457 Alicia Godfrey-White

    1. I transitioned for 9 months before I finally did the big chop.  I was surprised at by the texture of my hair, but it was a pleasant surprise.I have super, very tightly curled and coiled  hair. I love it, except I could do with a little less frizz  (but I live in the south, humidity is horrible down here) and the shrinkage but I guess that’s due to the texture. Oh, well I still LOVE my Hair.
    2. I did great last week.  I finally decided to add some castor oil into my conditioner and since I co-wash my hair at least twice a week and I do the CG method I definately meet my goals every week.  Plus,  I applied my oil every other night after misting with water and applying my cantu shea butter.
    3. I would like to win the Coconut JBCO.  Thanks in advance =)

  • Tishana Trainor

    Hey everyone!

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
No, I wasnt surprised. I was natural until I was 13, so I remember how my hair was.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I did good, sealing my ends with castor oil (cold-pressed) or the Curls of the World Castor oil pomade after applying my leave-in, or after just wetting my hair. I also baggied my hair after my first henna treatment. Its so humid in Atlanta that all I’ve been wearing is a curly fro.. Its cute!

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
    Coconut, ALL DAY!

  • Zee Hoskins

1.Nope,I transitioned so I already had a feeling of what my hair would be like(and my mother let it be KNOWN that my hair wouldn’t look like Naptural85′s or Solange’s.

2.I did fine, got back on track of applying castor oil 3x a week!!need to get some more though, running low!!

3.coconut!!It sounds like it smells delish…

     1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

What surprised me is how many different textures I have in my hair! lol– But I have learned to manage each state and I am very please with my hair. I watched so many video’s and wished my hair would have a certain look before I went natural. Then I realized, that no one was the same and came to terms with that fact. I decided no matter how my hair looked, I would love it… And I really do– Even if I have like 4 different textures! lmbo! As it came in I marveled at the curls– My on lil coily coils and curls popped up and I was over joyed… Thankful for what the Lord gave me… No matter what — OUR HAIR IS FABULOUS! And I just wish I had began my transition years ago:)

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did great- I am on this challenge like whit on rice honey! No deviations for NaeNaeBoo!

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

I’d love to try the Coconut. I have the regular and the Lavender– Than you Jenell!

     1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
At first I thought I would have hair like denimpixie after watching so many of her videos. But when I realized I have my own texture, I wasn’t too surprised or disappointed with what I had. It was like I forgot my texture from the first time I went natural. LMAO Hilarious no? ^.~

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
Yes I did! I used it more than 5 times. I’ve been using the Rosemary JBCO with no other oils mixed in on my scalp, and my hair to seal, ect. I also started adding JBCO to my pre-poo regime. I don’t really like using oil with my pre-poo condishes, but the JBCO is sorta nice! I also like the tingle of the rosemary in this brand of JBCO.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
If I win… I would love to try the coconut oil JBCO!

In the begining I wasnt too suprised by my texture. I have a few family members with natural hair so imagined it look similar to ther hair. Now im am suprised by my texture because my hair is getting thick and ive always had fine hair.

Last week was an okay week. I ran out jbco and wasnt able to buy a bottle right away. I did however have some left over castor oil that ive had for a few months. I brought it from the beauty supply store. I applied castor oil about 3x time this week, mostly to my edges as usual. My edges are finally starting to see some improvements :) . I noticed when i put my hair back into a headband, my edges looked much fuller than usual. I was soo happy. I also tried aloe vera gel for the first time this week. I mixed it with jbco and coconut oil

Ive been using the regular jbco and i mix it with coconut oil so i would like the lavender jbco

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? I wasn’t really surprised, I had a little bit of an idea. I was more surprised that I had no idea what my “type” was
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I’ve been using JBCO and coconut oil, the nape of my head is still tender. My hair is certainly growing, I noticed yesterday.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
    Lavender

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? I wasn’t surprised at the texture; but I was shocked by how much work I had to put into detangling, etc.
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? I did very well – used castor oil on my edges and scalp  4 times.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? I’d love to try the coconut.

    Check In Questions:

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
No. Not really. I am mixed, but for the most part I knew my hair was kinky. And since I do my hair i knew the different textures of my hair. So no surprises there.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Last week I think I did okay. I wasn’t putting it on as much but i was doing it in moderation. i think as I go along I’m learning more. I finally took my braids out. Yay for me, and my hair has def. grown. before the was to my ears, and now it is past. yay. I have major shrinkage though so when I style it, it just looks the same.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
    Lavender

  • JourneeNatural

    1. I didnt know what to expect as far as my texture goes. I think I was just in a state of culture shock and wondering what do I do now??? I transitioned but the more I did my hair and learned about caring for my curls Im surprised but happy and how my hair is even curlier than when I first started to go natural.

    2. I did great last week. I applied the castor oil to my edges and sealed my hair with it at least four times during the week. I have been doing protective styles but decided to rock a twist out this week so will be sealing with castor oil when I wet my hair to retwist. No challenges this far!!

    3. I would like to win the lavendar scented JBCO. I already have products with coconut oil so I am curious to try a different scent!

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
I was actually super surprised and very happy with my curl pattern!!! I always knew I had absolutely had no curl pattern because I remember my hair being thick but don’t remember any type of curl. I always thought I could never rock “cute” nappy or natural hairstyles but lo and behold I’m 4B!! I was also completely caught off guard by how soft my hair is!!! Needless to say I am fully in love with my hair and everything about it!!!
    2. How did u do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I did and I actually put kinky twist in my hair for the first time myself since I’m going on vacay today!!!! (Barbados watch out now!!!!) So I will be moisturizing my scalp with the castor oil while the braids are in.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? I would love to win the Coconut especially since I didn’t realized we could use that kind in this challenge(I know I should’ve asked lol!!!) But yea I love coconut oil and to have it mixed with castor sounds like the best of both worlds!!!!

  • Venuslife

     1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
I wasn’t shocked at all because I remember dealing with my hair growing up. My first perm wasn’t till I was 8.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I slacked of a little with the everyday care. I think I was to ambitious.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
I Love the coconut and what its doing to my hair.

  • http://twitter.com/humbly4real Stanethia Miller

    1. I don’t know why but I was. At the time when I went natural, I had a lot of natural friends with natural hair and it was curly and long. As mine grew, I was disappointed by the lack of curl and length. Seeing my hair as it grew took me back to the days when my mother and grandmother and beauticians spoke negatively about my texture… But as my hair grew and I began learning how to take care of it, I got over it and accepted it for what it is, MINE!
    2. I did well last week. I use my castor oil pretty much daily.
    3. I think I would want the lavender JBCO… I would probably mix it with my regular castor oil so it lasts longer!

I’m also putting a pic of my hair which is in stretched mini-twists… I think my hair is really growing!

  • missmoonsmusings

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
Absolutely!!! Since I was a little kid, I’ve been told by my Mum how unmanageable and thick and (her words) CRAZY my hair was. I was petrified at the thought of dealing with it at first, but realized that with the tools I had now, it wasn’t that daunting!!
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I totally slacked this week. I only applied the Castor oil to my scalp once. I plan on washing my braids this weekend, so I think I will make it up by doing a hot oil treatment before washing.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
    Mmmmm….. coconut, definitely!!!

     1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

No really surprises for me since i knew from young and I have very soft hair

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

Last week was OK, tried to follow through on my goals only LOC twice and not three times but mange to put my oil mix on my scalp and edges nightly

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

Since I have never used any JBCO,I think I would start with the Regular. I am using just the cold compressed Castor Oil for this challenge and i am seeing results (LOL, hope it is not my imagination)

  • http://twitter.com/Takesha1 Curly Chocolate

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

I loved my texture because I was so surprised by how soft my hair could be and how it naturally coils. If I had known this is how my hair would be I would’ve gone natural a long time ago :)

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I used castor twice on my edges. I was being lazy about putting it on my edges every night :(

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

    Lavender

  • Je Brother

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

I was very anxious and quite surprised that I have actually 3 different texture patterns. Overall I knew my hair had TEXTURE to it just not sure how much. After all all these YT videos and just the over all  hype about bringing out your true curl pattern and what not. I thought oh I will have soft beautiful ringlets of curls like Diana Ross…But boy did that day dream end ever so quickly…At this point I have learned that unlike permed/Processed hair My natural hair has a mind of its own and rather me trying to make my hair conform to fit what i want it to be, that i have to just be ok with Conforming to what my hair wants to be and just simply is…NATURAL!!

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I still use the JBCO daily and as a hot oil treatment once a week…The only challenge I have is that I run out of the stuff as my hair soaks it up. I even have been running around with a spritzer bottle full of castor oil, conditioner and olive oil with a lil bit of water to maintain hydration during these extremely hot sunny days (weather in Brooklyn this summer has been something hot)

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?  I have never tried the coconut nor the lavender JBCO I dont know why I never thought about using them I always buy the regular one and would like to try either of the two scents… Good luck ladies

  • http://twitter.com/blackizbeutiful chima lubin

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

No not really because I have been natural before without doing the BC, I just let my hair grow out a little. So I wasnt really suprised about my hair texture.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Yes I did, and I dont have any other challenges

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? The coconut

SO I HAD TO FORCE MYSELF TO CHOP OFF AN 1 1/2 BC MY ENDS WERE RISING. I FEEL LIKE CRYING. I WAITED TO LONG AND NOW THATS WHAT I GET:(

  • Feron

    1.  When I became fully natural, I was surpised by my texture because when I was younger, my hair was always pressed out so I had no idea I had curly hair or a curl pattern. So when I did my BC, I was like whoa I have a curl pattern!! Then when I did my first wash and go, I was amazed at how my hair reacted.
    2. I did well last week and followed all of my goals.
    3. I’d like to win the Coconut JBCO, I love coconuts.

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

DEFINITELY! I was natural for most of my life and never knew my hair had even one curl..

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I applied it every SINGLE morning and 5 nights. I am lesssening my goal of 7 nights, 7 mornings to 5 nights, 5 mornings. There are no challenges, I sometimes just forget to apply lol.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
    COCONUT!

    Check In Questions:
    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? Yes!  I had more curl than I thought!  Mind you, they were tiny spirals, but I was happy to see them!  I was also surprised by the looseness of the curls on my nape. Those are S shaped and hang lower than the rest and are the bane of my existence!  Lol!
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? No!  I ran out of JBCO.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? I’d like to win the Lavender, mmmm, flowers!

  • http://twitter.com/IamNads Nadine Stewart

    1. I still don’t think I’m ‘there’ yet. I haven’t relaxed my hair since Nov 2009 but I spent a year weaving my hair while transitioning (I didn’t know the name for it at that point). When I stopped weaving, I still pressed my hair for 6 months before finally embracing my hair in its natural state. So, even though I’m fully natural, I think I need to do a few ‘mini chops’ before I will get to a head of healthy hair. I don’t think my texture is ‘all it can be’ yet. It’s completely messed up. I need to give it time before I can say if it’s what I expected, or not.
    2.  Week 7 was good. I tried co-washing instead of my weekly low poo but I don’t think my hair liked it. Definitely a learning experience. Used the JBCO just like I planned, my daily edges massage (still pumped that I’m seeing growth there!) and also sealing moisture in and oiling my scalp 3 times.
    3. I currently use JBCO infused with Rosemary to help stimulate the follicles. However, I’d love to try the Coconut one, I bet it smells/feels great!

  • tanisha v

    1.  I was a little surprise since I had never seen my natural texture.  I was loving the curls the first time i was my hair and I been in love ever since.
    2. Yes, I used my castor oil more than 3 times last week
    3. I would love to try them all since I have never tried that brand. I would love to compare it with the brand from whole foods

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500590544 NaturallyDivine NaturalDiva

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? I wasn’t really surprised at my texture because I have lots of pics of when I was younger so I could really see how my hair was gonna look in its natural state. What surprised me, however, was the thickness of my hair and how many actual strands of hair there are on my head and how thick my individual strands are. I have lots and lots of very thick strands. IT’S GLORIOUS!! :-)
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I followed through with my goals. I continue to oil my scalp every day with the castor oil and my edges 2x a day with the JBCO. All challenges I had previously have been averted.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? I’ve been using the Regular JBCO so I’m a bit biased toward it and would love to win!!

  • Karemel

     1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

I’m very surprised by my texture now that I’m fully natural.  My stylist (both then and now) kept encouraging me to go natural – one time as he was putting in a ponytail (I must have been between relaxers), he showed me the texture of my natural hair.  I was not ready for how coily it is now, year’s later – especially in the back!

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did much better last week – my hair was in twists.  It’s much easier for me to apply the castor oil when I have twists in my hair.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

I think I would like the Coconut JBCO.

  • houston2b

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? When I became fully natural I was very suprised by my texture…since the age of 13 I have had a relaxer and never knew my hair…I was so very suprised that it was thick and naturally very coiley..I am so in love with my natural hair there is no way on earth anyone could get me to go back to a relaxer…

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I did great I followed through with my goals..No challenges thus far.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? I would like to win regular JBCO so I could make my own scent :-)

  • Doline

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
I was not surprised. I’m originally from Kenya, Africa and while I was growing up had natural hair so I knew my texture would be kinks and maybe some tiny coils. I just didn’t know what to do with it because I don’t remember how I took care of my natural hair back then… I think I just used to have it in cornrow styles. I love my hair just the way it is and I enjoyed learning about it! Still have more to learn though…
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
Applied JBCO on edges at night before going to bed and on scalp in between the two strand twists I have in. Only challenge has been time to do as much with the JBCO as I want to as I’ve been in the process of moving.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
I would love to win the Coconut JBCO because it smells heavenly to me!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Nadia-Davis/712386578 Nadia Davis

    1) Yes, I was definitely surprised by my texture!! I was jaded for so long by the creamy crack it took some getting used to: I couldn’t make it soft, shiny, it wouldn’t lay down….sometimes I still struggle.

    2) I did ok, I got to 2 days oiling my scalp.
    3) I’m gonna win the coconut JBCO!! ;)

  • Baileylsamantha

    1. I was a little surprised by my texture when I became fully natural. I thought my hair was going to be hard a brillo pad and I wouldn’t be able to do anything with it, but it can be as soft as cotton when moisturized and it is able to hold any style I have done thus far, so I am thankful :)

    2. Last week I followed my regimen and applied castor oil almost every day, which is over my initial goal.

    3. I would like to win Coconut or Lavender JBCO, just to try a different castor oil.

  • shanta ferguson

    1. When i became fully natural were u surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? I was not surprised because my hair has always been curly and pretty easy grade to manage.

    2. How did i do last week? Last week i stuck to my goals by sealing my hair with castor oil and putting it on my scalp to keep it from being dry.

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?
    I would like the coconut

  • Ikila

     1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?

I wasn’t so much surprised with my texture as I was with my density.  I have been wearing a press-n-curl, perms, weaves, braids, wigs, perm on the edges and natural on the length, permed-weaves, wigs on top of braids… YOU NAME IT, I HAD IT for as long as I can remember! lol  The times that the perm was grown out under the wigs/weaves/braids and the times I was rocking the press-n-curl… my hair was always very very thin and limp.  So now that I am completely natural I am finally seeing how amazing dense and fuller my “REAL” hair is and I love it!  However, that shrinkage is something to write home to mama about! It is CRAY! lol

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did very well last week.  Now that I am back from vacation and into my normal routine again, I have been able to apply the Castor oil to my edges and ends every night as well as add the Lavender JBCO to my DC.  Goals are exceeded for the week with no challenges thus far. YAY!

    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender?

Should I be so lucky to win, I would love to try the Coconut JBCO as it would round out my collection.  However, I would be grateful and honored to receive any of them… my hair is a fan of all things castor oil based.

  • http://www.facebook.com/MissArielNicole Ariel Jones

1.) I wasn’t all that surprised by my texture because I have pictures of what my hair used to look like when my hair was either relaxer-free, or when my mom was putting texturizers in my hair. It was always super curly. But I did have that “wow” moment when I was transitioning and I saw the little “beebees” on the back of my neck curling up. I was excited to have that all over my head.
2.)I did fairly okay last week. I used up pretty much the last of my JBCO this past week, so I just oiled my scalp with the Hot Six Oil that I still have hanging around (it’s got Castor Oil in it). But My new bottle of JBCO came in the mail so now I’m back on my grind! A challenge that has also been dissolved, thanks to Jennel, is that I don’t have to wait for my hair to dry to apply CO. During my summer job I get super hot and sweaty and wash&go’s are essential, so my hair is almost never dry.

3.) I would LOVE to try the coconut JBCO because they were out of the Coconut when I needed to order more. I’ve tried Lavender and it was okay. And Oils From Jamaica by accident sent me the regular JBCO just now.

  • http://www.facebook.com/ericanneal Erica Neal

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? I was totally surprised but definitely in a good way! My hair has always been so think and “unmanageable” even while relaxing it so I was kind of scared of what I would have once I did my BC and then decided to let it grow out. In the first few months after my BC I didn’t see what my true curl patter was. But in recent months I’ve found that my texture is naturally a tight kinky curly coil pattern and I love it!!! It doesn’t take much for it to curl up and it’s more manageable and softer now than it was ever before.
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I’m finally back on track! I moisturized my scalp with my Lavender JBCO 4 times this past week and did a deep conditioner with my Coconut JBCO and Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? I love the way the Lavender feels on my scalp, it tingles like a tea tree or peppermint oil and makes it feel extra clean and takes the itch away. So because of that I would love to win the Lavender.

  • http://seiwaakoto.bigcartel.com/ MzFobi

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
Both!!!! I wasn’t surprised how stubborn my hair got when it was dry because everything I know about maintaining the TWA pointed to dryness but when I learned about moisturising and proper care, I was really surprised how different my texture looked and felt.

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I have had to drop the JBCO because hubby is a hair man and has tried to cope with the smell of the Coconut JBCO but cannot do it any longer so now I am substituting with coconut. I have to take a trip to the beauty supply and maybe purchase the Lavender hoping that it wont be as strong as the Coconut? Or maybe I should go back to the plain castor oil?Thoughts anyone?

I was really suprised by my texture because I was always told that my hair was coarse. I did well last week and stuck to my regime. I would like to win the coconut since i already have the regular and don’t like floral scents much.

    1. I was surprised with how much I loved it. I wasn’t too surprised by the texture. I admired big loose curls but I already knew my hair wouldn’t be like that. I feel in love with my tight little curls immediately and haven’t looked back. I wouldn’t trade them for any other texture!
    2. I did well last week, I oiled my scalp 3 times and sealed 2 times with castor oil.
    3. I would like to win the coconut JBCO.

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
I wasnt that surprised by my hair texture but i was rather shocked at how dry my hair really was. I have always had dry hair, but after my Big chop it felt so dry. After a while, i became familiar with my hair texture and started finding my way.
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I did very well last week. I followed through with my goal and i didnt encounter any challenges.

I will love to win the Coconut JBCO.

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
Nope. I only permed my hair 2x a year so I always knew what my texture was. I love it and I’m glad to have it back

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not?
No, I wasn’t surprised because even while relaxed I noticed that I had about 3 different textures throughout my hair. I just embraced it! If I knew then what I know now about natural hair, I would probably have more hair growth…

    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
Last week was great. Somehow i noticed that my edges are more full. I never had a problem with them but i notice they are full. I followed through with my regimen goals as well.

I have never been surprised f my natural hair my dad actually had long hair that he kept in braids it was shiny, long and silky so I knew I would not be far from his texture.

So far I think Im doing good although I have ran out of jbco I have my oil mix that I have added castor oil. I am hoping to either win it or buy it this weekend which ever one comes first. I have no challenges at this time but Im planning my next protective style to be a sew-in.

I would like to try either coconut or lavender they both may smell better than the extra black jamaican castor oil I purchased earilier, the smell is stronger than the regular jbco

I have noticed my edges are thicker but I have not noticed much growth. I have ran out of jbco this wewl is payday I plan on buying more if Im not the winner.

I would like to win coconut.

    1.  Not at all surprised by my texture. I was certainly hopeful that it would be loose curls that hung beautifully and didn’t frizz but that was not the case at all and I knew that it would be rough. I love it now though because I know what to do with it.
    2. week 7 was good. One of my goals is to massage my scalp with it and I forget that all the time. So that would be my biggest challenge.
    3.  I’d like lavender if I won.

    1. I wasnt’ surprised by my texture, I was happy my texture wasn’t damaged too much. On the crown of my head, that hair was very straight. Now that section of hair is “changing” as my hair continues to grow. I didn’t know it could be so curly. I knew thick, nice wave pattern, but  not curly. Interesting.
    2. I did a lot better this week. I “oiled” my scalp. But oil on my braids and then braid outs. My hair is extremely soft to the touch; even when the humidity has “created” and unwanted bush. People are always asking to touch it.
    3. It doesn’t matter. As long as it works, I’m flexible!

    1. When you became fully natural were you surprised at all by your texture? Why/why not? I was surprised by my 2 textures, more specifically that my front is so straight. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect but the last thing I expected was straight. I remember when the stylist cut my hair, she still had conditioner in it when I first looked in the mirror. I was so afraid that I was going to have a Rodney Allen Rippey fro (some of you young folk might not know who he is). I was able to exhale when she finger styled it.
    2. How did you do last week (week 7)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Yes, I followed through with my goals during week 7. Again, I’m so happy the first challenge got me in the habit of caring for my hair because these last 2 weeks were rough (evidenced by the fact that I’m just now checking in). I don’t think I’ve gotten home before 10pm or had a full weekend without work or schoolwork in a month. But the habit I’ve established through this challenge kept me on task. I applied the JCBO to my scalp nightly.
    3. Which JBCO would you like to win? Regular, Coconut, or Lavender? Coconut please.

    1. When I became fully natural I really wasn’t surprised at all by my texture. My hair has always been thick and corse so I didn’t expect that to change:)

    2.  I did alright last week. I did not wash my hair as much last week in hopes that it will help with my moisture problem. I did follow through with my goals although it was not as much as I wanted to. My hair has trouble retaining moisture throughout the day/ My scalp holds the oil just fine but my hair itself is dry by mid-day. Decreasing my washing has not made a notable difference but I will keep trying things:) I just have to get used to the fact that my hair sucks up everything that I put in it.

    3. I am currently using the lavender JBCO so I would love to win that one. It smells really good:) I would be open to the coconut:)

    1. I was surprised when I became fully natural at my hair texture! Because my hair was thin when it was relaxed, I thought it was going to be the same natural. But no I have thick and corse hair and I’m thankful. I believe my hair type is 4C
2.I did great last week!@google-b8dd8e7763b4ad00eee9237a62da7d74:disqus 3.I kept up with my goals and I havent had any challenges so far! I just try to stick with my weekly regimen!
3.I would love to win the JBCO but the coconut one! I just love the smell of coconut , I dont like the lavender smell! Hopefully I win the bottle!!:) GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

I was surprised to see the many textures throughout my head. I used the oil about 3-4 times this week. I’m definitely starting to fall off a bit but trying to hang in there with being consistent. I like the coconut scent the best.

    1. Yes, I didn’t have a curl pattern yet so i didn’t like my hair.

    2. After week two, i realized that attempting to use castor oil 6 times a week was not realistic for me and my schedule so I began to use it 3 to 4 times a week. However, i do manage to use it everyday (sometimes every - other – day) for my scalp, edges, and eyebrows. I also use it as a pre-poo.

    3. I’d like the JBCO coconut kind.

    1. I was not surprised by my texture. It is about the same as my daughter. I did wish for more curls instead of coils but I have learned to love my coils. When I first started I wanted my hair just like yours. You encouraged me to embrace my hair no matter what the texture was.

    2. Last week was ok. I did not use my oil everyday on my edges but I did oil oil my scalp more often.
    3. I would love coconut castor oil. I have fallen in love with everything coconut. I love for it in all my products.
