Castor Oil Challenge Week 5 Check In

By Jenell — March 29, 2012

Thursday March 29, 2012 – Wednesday April 4, 2012

If you didn’t join the challenge in the beginning I’m sorry, it’s too late. You can participate in the Summer challenge (June 1- Aug 1).

This week is length check week!  Take your pics (if you can) and post them with your check in.  It would be great if you could post ONE of your beginning pics and then ONE of your now pics to compare your growth/thickness.

To post a pic, click in the comment box to activate it, then look at the bottom left of the box.  You will see “+image”, click that and upload your pic.

If you are checking in from a mobile device, you may not be able to upload your length check pic, make sure to post your pics when you get to a computer.

I finally washed my hair! I did my prepoo with pharmacy castor oil (smells horrible) and then sealed my hair during my moisturizing session with my coconut jbco (smells like roasted coconut, yum!). Don’t forget that you can save 10% on all your jbco purchases from OilsFromJamaica when you use the code KCCM10.

Check In Questions:

  1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?
  2. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
  3. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in?

My answers:

  1. All my new close friendships are with naturalistas.  My relaxed friends and I don’t communicate as often as we used to. I don’t think it has anything to do with me being natural, but I do equate all my new friendships with me going natural.
  2. I did okie. I wasn’t on fire like I was weeks 1-3, but last week (week 4) was my first week back at work. I could hardly get enough sleep let alone apply castor oil nightly.  massaged my scalp according to my goals and sealed my hair every other night.
  3. I KNOW I see a difference! If you check out my pics, you can see it too! My scalp and hair loves castor oil! So soft and shiny!

Wanna put your pics together like this? Go to fotoflexer.com and create a collage.

Do you Tweet? If so use hashtag #KCCMCastorOilChallenge or #KCCM so we all can follow the convo.  Feel free to include me  @BlakIzBeautyful

Keep encouraging eachother, you all are doing soo well!

Thats amazing! Your hair looks so silky. I must try this.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Thanks love, but I don’t want to mislead you into thinking that my hair looks like this just bc I use jbco. That would be false. Over the past 2 years I have been committed to taking care of my hair on a weekly basis with a strict and lengthy regimen. The castor oil has been a great addition.
You can find my regimen in the top menu, hover over “about the founder” and then select “my regimen” for a detailed overview of how I manage my hair.

Has your hair doubled in it’s monthly growth since starting the challenge or is it the same amount of growth?

        • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

          Great question!
It has definitely doubled or came very close. Because I trimmed my hair a few days after the day 1 pic was taken and it’s still so much longer after only 5 weeks.

  • Ksndra

There has no changes in any of my relationships, and yes, I am still keeping up with the challenge I committed to however I don’t see any thickness or growth. I’mm really hoping it’s just me :-( still gonna keep going though….. Plus I have stopped sodas all together and drink at least 64oz water a day to keep with moisture and growth…. (Actually, I did this before this challenge)

    • Kamilah Berry

Congrats on the water and not drinking soda.  I have just done the same thing and find that adding a bit of MIO to my water helps.  Especially when we go out to eat!

      • Monique Bennefield

I’m with you guys except my vice is frappes, capps, and tea. In place of the sugary drinks I’ve been using lemons and limes inside my bottled water. I haven’t tried MIO yet, but I my moms says she likes it.

        Great job guys! #H2Oisourfriend

        • Kamilah Berry

Try the MIO w/ some lemon juice…awesomeness!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

If you started with us on this challenge from day one, there should be growth with or without the castor oil. Have you taken measurements? Did you use the castor oil at least 3x a week?

    • Alenebaptiste

I slacked on no sodas this week! : ( I will do better though.

      • Growtotheflow

Sparkling water is an awesome option! Not quite the same as the joy of a coke or sprite, but lemon/lime sparkling is a good way of getting the fizz w/o the calories/sugar- That’s how I weened off pop (Midwest word shoutout to “pop”).

  • Cynhen

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?
    - My biggest change is that I am now more outgoing with natural women that I see and we discuss our hair quite readily. I cannnot say that I’m no longer friends with people who have relaxers or wear weaves but we probably talk less. I am single and not quite sure that black men are as attracted to me with a TWA but I get more looks from white men so maybe things will change when I have more length.

How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?- Last week was not as good because I made the mistake of manipulating my hair more by brushing it flat to get a loser curl. That is the first time that I had any breakage and now I realize that I have to really be more careful and keep it simple in my regime and hair styles.Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on your edges, are they growing in?- My focus has been the edges and they are definitely growing in; with the shrinkage on my TWA it is more difficult to notice a growth but I am going to have a stylist create a two-strand twist hairstyle for me on Saturday so I might have a better idea at that point in time.l

    • Kamilah Berry

I’ve noticed the same thing w/ white men…I thought it was just in my head.

    • Kamilah Berry

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Too bad you’re not in NYC. Men love women with TWAs here. I got more play with my TWA then I do now. LOL ( yes I’m married but NYC men are bold!)
I’m glad you payed attention to how your hair responded to the brushing. It takes a good eye to notice that after just one week.
Great at edges. Keep up the good work.

      • alene baptiste

White men attracted to natural women… That sounds like a good blog topic!

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? No, but I have many natural friends people that I am very close to. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?Yes, I applied castor oil to my ends as a sealant and on my scalp as well at least three times during the week. I had no challenges. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in? My hair has become thicker and I have gained some length as well :) .

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Great Job. Keep up the good work.

  • Sabrena Harrison

    1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? No changes in my relationships since going natural.2. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I followed through with my goals and did very well in week 4.  So far no challenges.3. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on your edges, are they growing in? I have noticed my hair is thicker (although my hair is already thick).

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Awesome! Keep up the good work.

  • Napiphany

    1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? No they haven’t changed, but my friends are impressed with how knowledgeably I am about hair and products, and since I have been natural, my mom has been taken aback how much care I take to my hair.2. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Last week I didn’t go beyond the three days as I have in the previous weeks, but I am still into the challenge. Also I have revisited the Cantu Shea Butter, I applied it on my hair w/ the castor oil…and when I tell you my hair was so soft the next day!!!! #Ohhhweee, I think I have found my perfect duo!!!3. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in
thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are
they growing in? I have noticed growth on the sides and a little growth in the front.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Don’t you just love when you revisit an old friend and they work great? Keep up the good work.

      • Napiphany

        Yes!!!! Thanks!

    • Monique Bennefield

Hey I’ve noticed too how interested my friends are in my healthy hair. Kudos to you girl. Make it work!

    • Karla

Cantu Shea butter? Is that a leave-in conditioner?

      • Napiphany

Yes it’s called a leave in repair but I have seen people use it as a leave in conditioner…

  • Nakeamorris25

I cant show how my hair has responsed to the castor oil  right now cause I have it in genie locks aka yarn twist. I have been spraying my twist with a combinatin of water, conditioner, and castor oil and I really like it, when I take the twist down in May I think I will continue to spray that mixture on my hair daily. 1. I will say that my friends have not changed or acted differently since I have been natural, I will say that I have been asked to do hair more often since I have been natural, asked what I use,and been asked for advice on hair issues. I’m not a certified cosmetologist, but they have noticed a difference in my hair and the styles I do. My husband loves my hair in it’s natural state and was the one who has been telling me for years to go natural before I decided to do it. 2. I kept with my goal of spraying my hair daily. Out of all the times I have had my hair in braids or twist with hair added in this is the most moisturized my hair has been.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

I’m looking forward to seeing your results when you take your hair down. Keep up the good work.

  • Tramelle Thomas

    1. None of my relationships have changed. Although, a couple of my friends have tried to grow there hair out in preparation to go natural but just couldn’t seem to “do it” LOL. I tried to encourage them as much as I could but they seemed beyond frustrated. They don’t have the courage to BC like I did. I still love them the same!

    2. I did ok this week. I’m on the same track as the previous week. I apply and massage every other night and seal when I moisturize.

    3. I haven’t noticed it getting thicker, only because it was so thick to begin with. But length…..I am too excited! My hair has grown a full 1″ –  1 1/4″ all the way around. When I started this challenge, my hair was 3 1/2″. It’s now 4 1/2″ – 4 3/4″. I had my fiance measure last night. I don’t have a picture of the back from the beginning of the challenge, but it was just below my tattoo. This picture was from last night.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Eventhough your friends didn’t fully commit, the fact that you even inspired them to attempt is impressive. They will try again, bc they will see your growth and health and they will do it. Lol
      1″-1 1/4″??????? NO WAY!!!
This is great! We have 8 more weeks to go. I would be amazed to see another 2″-2.5″ by June 1!
      Keep up the good work.

      • Monique Bennefield

Love it girl! Congrats on the hair growth!

  • Kamilah Berry

I love that your husband is so supportive.  Did you do your braids yourself?  I am trying to find a shop near me who does them…don’t trust doing it myself.

  • Kamilah Berry

    • Tramelle Thomas

LOL I didn’t know if you were responding to my post or not. Thanks about the glasses. I LOVE them and they’re so different. I do my own hair. In the picture those are finger coils. What city are you in, if you don’t mind me asking?

      • Kamilah Berry

        Philly

    • Nakeamorris25

I’m not sure if your responding to me but thank you my honey is pretty fab! I did do the braids myself; since I decided to go natural I don’t let anyone else touch my hair I figured if it dosen’t grow or fall out it’s my fault and Iwould be ok cause I didn’t dish out money for someone else to make it fall out for me lol. Just like anything the more you do it the better you get and you find a technique that works for you. If you do have someone else do your braids make sure that they don’t pull so tight on your edges.

  • Kamilah Berry

    Love those glasses!

  • Kamilah Berry

    Love those glasses!

  • Kamilah Berry

None of my relationships have changed, ppl don’t really mention that I cut my hair.  I don’t know if that is a good thing or a bad thing.  My bff has been natural for years, so I knew she would support me.
I have been oiling my scalp, doing my treatments and have JBCO in my spray bottle…so I have been on point.  I really want to get my hair braided, but I am not sure if it will effect me in the challenge.  Like will my braids slip, will I be able to wash as often???
    I have definitely seen growth!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Getting braids is a great protective style. If the braids are installed well, you shouldn’t have much slip at all. You can wash as often as you’d like but the presentation of your hair may not be as fresh.
      Keep up the good work.

  • Darcia Dillard

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? NoHow did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I followed through on my goals.  No challenges. I used a castor oil “grease” to twist with.  My hair is soft. slight greasy with no definition.  I will only use that product to seal my ends. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? I see no difference my main concern is my edges.  For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in? My right side is improving more than the left side.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Hey love, the challenge requires you use castor oil in it’s organic form. Castor oil grease has synthetic ingredients. Do you have pure castor oil as well (cold press, pharmacy grade, or Jamaican black)?

  • lahill73

I’m not really big on “friends”, so I only have 2; my bestie whom I’ve known since 3rd grade (I’m 38) and my niece. Neither of those relationships have changed.
Last week I met the challenge goals by pre-pooing with castor oil and applying to my scalp and/or hair strands every other day.
I was specifically concerned with my edges and can honestly say that I see a big difference. I had yarn braids for 2 months and when I took them out I had 2 spots at my temple area that were pretty much non existence. However, since using castor oil they have grown to the point where I can incorporate them in my twists!
The first pic is my edges looking pretty raggedy in early March and the right pic is my edges blended n with my twist this week.

  • felisity1983

    Hiyo week 5,

I have the same relationships as I did before going natural…None, other from the hubby and family. I do have lots of conversations about if my hair is real, how did I get it so kinky, who does my hair, how much I would charge to do theirs, and what I use in my hair to keep it from looking or feeling dry. I did get my younger sister to go natural, but she isn’t caring for her hair. It could be due to youth (19 yrs.) or carelessness, but any which way she is natural and I’m sure she’ll start caring one of these days.

I am rocking my normal routine with no hitches and am dedicated to continue doing so.

I’m not sure if my hair is growing at a faster rate, but I did dye my hair 2 weeks ago and see that I have close to a 1/2 inch of new growth. I guess I’ll see at the end of the challenge how much my hair has grown. If it’s more than 1 1/2 inches then yeah, but if not, oh well. My adges are growing in a bit thivker though. They are no longer as thin and see through. So I guess the CO is working for something.

  • Katoasha Smith

    ~WEEK 5~
    1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? I would say relationships with co workers have changed maybe because they had always seen me with weave in my hair but when I decided to take the weave out permanently they just didn’t want to be around as much.2. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I am on track with my goals.

3.Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in? All along I have been saying that I didn’t notice any changes in length and I was very stuck on that until I took the ruler to my hair and it shows that I have a half inch of growth all the way around , I am going to give it to the castor oil and protective styling that I have been doing, I never get to see to much growth due to the constant touching and combing.

I am now looking at 5.5 inches in the front and 4.5 at the back and sides!!!! and of course the there is absolutely a lot of thickness

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/2LNXCMGKITZVPLE4YLAAYV5UKI Lee

Theres been no changes in my relationships really, I have a few friends and family who prefer my hair straight and say something every now and then, but not enough to ruin a friendship in or anything.  I stayed in goal for this week and I am very happy about that.  Time is still a bit of a struggle but I’m committed to sticking it out.  Of course there is a difference it shows in the pics, I am surprised I felt like it was and I was really hoping it was, but once I did the pics it was proof positive.  I am soooo happy about that.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Your results are very impressive!!! Especially the front and left sides! Keep up the good work!

1.) Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?  Not that I have noticed

2.) How did you do last week (week 4)? I slowed down a bit this week and my scalp is happy

3.) Did you follow through with your goals? Still followed throug with meeting my goals

4.) Any challenges thus far?  Working through the transition with getting my hair used to castor oil

5.) Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? I cannot see a length differnce in my pics but I can tell its growing and my fairy knot problem is very much improved.  I have had no problems with dryness

6.) For those of you focusing on your edges, are they growing in?  Cannot tell yet but I think my hairline is just hereditary and here to stay.

Posting pics is not my forte put if you click on them they should enlarge:-)

    • Tazzee

I can see a difference in your length – it’s looking good.

      • Monique Bennefield

Yes I can see a difference. Good Job!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

    1. My relationships are the same they were when I first went natural, except I have added some naturals to my circle.  2. I did manage to stick with my original goal of 3x’s a week.  And no major set-backs this week.3. I looked at these pics for what seems like hours, and I can’t really tell a difference…but that’s probably because I’ve looked at these pics for toooooo long.  LOL  I did have enough sense to take measurements this time.  Since the challenge began I have switched to natural products, so overall my hair health and appearance has improved.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      I see a difference!
      love your hair!

      • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

LOL Thanks Love!! I saw it too, after I gave myself a couple hour break of looking at it!!

    • Tazzee

Major growth! Wow – I can’t wait to take my pics, yours have me excited.

    • Monique Bennefield

      Your hair is FREAKIN Beauitful!

      Thank you ladies!!

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?
Nope, but I do seem to talk about hair more.  I want to talk about it and so do others.  I guess natural hair is interesting!

How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I’m doing fine, oiling 2-3 times a week and sealing almost daily with my castor oil moisture mix.  I think I’ve addressed my challenges pretty well – my pillow has stopped complaining because I’m oiling in the morning rather than at night. I’ve mixed the castor oil with other oils and moisturizers, so the smell isn’t as bad and my hair is responding to it better.

Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in?Not sure about it.  My hair has grown but I don’t know if it’s more than usual because I’ve never kept track until now.  Also, I have new hair growing in, but that’s been happening since I stopped flat ironing often.  But one thing I have noticed this week it that my hair feels absolutely LUXURIOUS!  I LOVE the way it feels this week!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Great results!

  • moneeks

    1. No changes to my relationships. I do think that my style is a bit more rocker, which is fine by me!
    2. I used the Castor oil regularly this week, especially for edges, sealing, and scalp massages.
3.My hair is also really soft. I’m not posting a length check pic this week because I’m getting a trim this weekend (first trim since my big chop 8 months ago) and don’t want to get discouraged!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Take a pic anyways. You’re tracking your progress. Also take a pic after the trim to have a frame of reference for the next check in.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

Don’t be discouraged by the trim. It’s a necessary part of the process.  I used to be the same way until I began to love how silky my ends become afterwards and how polished my styles end up.

  • Lakesha Fields

    1. My week was ok. I started to slip up on applying my oil every night, I only applied 3 times this week. However my wash and condition went great because I added castor oil into my prepoo and conditioner. 2. My relationships have changed a little since going natural all my close friends are natural, but I am the only one who’s hair is in its natural state everyday. I love my hair and always want to talk about it, but it seems they are not very interested because they don’t have the same relationship with their hair. I have a friend with dreads she loves my hair and always talks to me about it, but we have differnent types of hair so it is not the same as talking to someone with loose hair, but I still love our conversations. I try to convience my friends to wear their hair out more and one has started to. 3. As you can see from my pictures below my egdes are growing in. I’m to excited!

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

Yay!! You’re edges are filling in really good!!

  • Etoyhmln

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?My relationships have not changed, however, I do find myself having more conversations with other naturals. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?I did not add JBCO directly to my weak areas as I had been. I did use JBCO with my pre-poo and my sealant.Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in?I can definitely see a difference in my length. Taking pictures of my hair and following a consistent regimen has made a huge difference in the health and length of my hair. I did my second big chop on 12/27. I take pictures on the 27 of each month to track growth. 3/27 I was able to do 7 corn-rows – yay me!Etoy

1.Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?
I think that in my personal relationships many of the people I associate with are more concerned about growing healthy hair, whether they are relaxed or natural, also I think that some of the people who have come incontact with me have wanted to become natural. Some are too fearful etc. But over all my relationships remain the same.2.How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
Well I went home to visit my family and I wanted to pack as light asd possible and only brought a small bottle of my oils with me…and I ran out half way through…so i did not get to apply the castor oil to my wash and goes as I would have loved to. In fact all i had was eco styler gel and conditioner…and I did that thang!3. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on your edges, are they growing in?I think the sides of my hair have grown some, cant really tell with the back though…it seems to have stayed the same length…the pics arent exactly at week one they are of week 3 i think…I have no pics of week one :(

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

Still a sizable amount of growth from week 3 to week 5!!

  • Dancingtonya

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? yeah, people dont think I am so attractive at first then after I walk with confidence they start to like it. Men call me sister now and respect me more now, when I was relaxed they just acted like nothing was special about me.  European people think my hair is amazing and how do I do it.   How did you do last week (week 4)?  Last week my hair was growing to fast so I trimmed it a little but it grew right back,  interesting. I am still following my goalsBased on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet?  My hair is thicker now. and my edges are nice and good.

It is funny, my “Office Husband” who is caucasian…loves my twist out…even though he has no idea what a twist out is. LOL

  • Alenebaptiste

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? No, most of my friends were natural before me and others have begun their journey. How did you do last week (week 4)? I did okay.  Did you follow through with your goals? I applied castor oil to my hair 4 times last week. Any challenges thus far?  I had such a hard week at work and trying to go through all this red tape to find my daughter a speech therapist has been over whelming so i did not do it daily and I wore a puff every day this week. : (Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? I have begun to see a difference in thickness the first week. I am unsure of the measurement but length wise my hair has grown. For those of you focusing on your edges, are they growing in? I have not had a problem with my edges.

Stay motivated everyone! I don’t know if it’s just me but these weeks are going by quickly!

      Hey!! How’s it going?

  • NaturalleBlessed

I think all of my relationships have changed for the better since I made the decision to go natural. I’ve actually influenced majority of my friends to partake in embracing, not only their hair, but their whole lifestyle. How did you do last week (week 4)? I applied the Castor Oil to my hair and scalp as scheduled. No major challenges, just the fact that I’m running out of oil…eek! LOL! I may order the JCBO after I post this comment. Haven’t noticed any changes in growth or thickness, since my hair has been in kinky twists and two strand twists from day one of this challenge. I have noticed the moisture retention though.

  • NaturalleBlessed

I forgot to add my image…

  • Tazzee

    1. My existing relationships haven’t changed since I went natural. I’m management at work and I’ve found that the natural ladies on staff have felt more comfortable talking to me now. This is great because I try not to be part of the ‘the establishment’ – it’s like we have a sorority now, LOL.
    2. I did well last week. To combat the itching, I mixed some JBCO with tea tree oil and it seems to work. I still put pure castor oil on my edges but the mixture is applied to my scalp. I use the pharmacy castor oil to put in my twists and the JBCO for scalp and edges application.
    3. I’m taking my twists out tomorrow so I’ll come back and post pics. I wanted to go ahead and answer the first questions. But I do see some growth, especially in the front because my twist bangs hang lower.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

I came by to see if you had added your pics yet!! And I feel you on the work thing….I am viewed as the anti-establishment manager.  Nothing I do conforms….and I have made it acceptable to just be yourself in our office. Just “Do You Boo Boo” LOL!!

      • Tazzee

I finally washed my hair and took pics – no growth. I have to post them when I figure out how to make a collage.

I’ve always been anti-establishment but my look fit in with the uppers. I think that’s why I was unapproachable. Now I get approached by everyone and I love it!

    • Tazzee

OK, I finally got my pictures together. I don’t see any growth but my edges seem to be getting thicker. The first collage is week 1 and the second week 5

    - 1&2 no i don’t think anyone cares about me going natural but my natural bff :) lol my boyfriend does want me to do it but he’s still here. I followed my goals, I still applied the oil and my hair stylist did also. I just used it 2x instead of every other day
Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in?
    - my hair is growing.. idk if it the castor oil or not. Thickness? not so much but I’m happy about that. I will continue to use it. Its a different experience since I have a partial sew in.

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? No, I still have the same friends. How did you do last week (week 4)? I finaly figured out how not to be so heavy handed with the castor oil..Did you follow through with your goals? Yes, I wanted to do a castor/jojoba/peppermint hot oil treatment.  I did it and my hair loves me for it..Any challenges thus far?  not a oneBased on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? My hair has grown a little bit past my top lip..YES.  Next I want to see chin length (Will not complain if longer) by the end of this challange..

  • Monique Bennefield

1). There is definitelty a difference is relationships with friends. One of my friends is 9mos transitioning, sot he conversations in tips are endless. My other close friend is highly considering going natural, helping her brings joy. My mom and I are natural and she always looking our to try new products. We recently purchased Organix Coconut Milk Shampoo and Conditioner and the Moroccan Argan Oil deep masque treatment. FUN!
     b. I have been getting a lot of  compliments & questions from naturals at church and local spots on what I do to maintain healthy hair.

2).Week four okay for me. I followed my castor oil goals. I wore a twist-out from my mini twists with the Eco-styler gel. My curls looked like corks, but i didn’t like the frizziness.

3). Based on my pic I see a major difference in length, Especially when my hair is wet. I’ll post pics.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

Ok so you know I was gonna swing by your post, too. LOL I’m with you on the frizziness using the eco.  I found that for me creamier styling products worked best.

      • Monique Bennefield

Yes I think I will stick with the SM Curl Enhancing Smootie or Miss Jessie’s Stretch Creme. Have you tried any of the Carol Daughters products?

        • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

I have and I either didn’t like the smells, didn’t like the price or didn’t like the product.  I have used the tui leave-in…really watery to me.  The healthy Hair Butter….didn’t like the smell.  Hair Balm…didn’t really have the staying power I expected for the price. I’m tight when it comes to my hair, so the product has really gotta wow me if it’s expensive.  So far I’m stuck on Giovanni’s leave-in and my shea butter mix.

          • Monique Bennefield

I here you, I’m glad that Giovanni’s Leave- In and your Shea Butter Mix.

    1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?

No, not at all. My hair is a big deal for me, but no one else cares about it! LOL I’m still the same SheRea, and they are still my greatest friends in the world.

How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I use castor oil in some capacity almost  daily, whether it be on my scalp, ends, edges, or length of my hair. My hair is shedding alot and there’s some breakage but I just need more protein in my diet!! I’m doing a protein treatment as we speak!!

Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in?

In thickness…not really… my hair looks big one minute and small the next, so I can never tell. It’s definitely grown 3/4-1 inch… well in the front for the most part. I wish I had done a proper length check the first time!! I have such a horrible memory :)

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

LOL @ my hair is  big deal for me…funny.  And it does look like there’s more of your hair in the now pic.

      • http://www.facebook.com/SheDel92 SheRea DelSol

the london weather got to the second pic and puffed it up… the other pic was right out of twists then chunky braided or something, so there was no volume. my hair is tricky lol

  • pia_bailey

    1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? No, I don’t feel like my relationships have changed.  I do see that I have become friends with more women that are going natural or have been natural for a while.  But my relaxed friends are still my friends.  We just don’t talk about hair unless they feel the need to tell my how going natural is just not for them.
    2. How did you do last week (week 4)? I did great last week.
    3. Did you follow through with your goals? Yes I followed my goals.  I massaged my scalp 4x and sealed my ends every other night.
     4. Any challenges thus far? No my scalp actually feels better now.  The castor oil is not irritating my scalp any more.
     5. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? Yes I can see a difference in the thickness and length.  I just got my hair in two strand twist on Friday.  The lady who was doing it for me also said she could see a difference from the last time I was there getting my hair done (4 weeks ago).

    1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? None of my relationships have changed. 2. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Last week I noticed how soft my hair was on a daily basis. Shea Moisture Curl Enhancing Smoothie, Castor Oil, and Water are my staple products right now.3. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? I most def see a difference in the thickness of my hair. There is growth as well!

    1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?
No my relationships have not changed

    2. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I did great last week & I followed thru with all goals. I included putting castor oil on my eyebrows :) I didn’t have any challenges.

    3. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on your edges, are they growing in?

My hair doesn’t grow more than about 1/2 inch a month so the length looks about the same.  I didn’t notice a difference in my edges until I compared the pics from last month..I see my hair is starting to grow in :)   I don’t notice a difference in the thickness of my hair.

    • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1316919537 LaJuan Wilks

I see the difference on the edges too.  Good job!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/EZK7UKW7GTWTI5TKBE2HYHDEHQ DivineB

None of my relationships changed since going natural.
Last week, I did not do as I should with my goals. My challenges are that I have so many different oils and products that I feel compelled to use those other items instead of my castor oil.
I definitely see a increase in thickness and length since starting this challenge, which is great.

  • Yvonne

1.I don’t feel that there has been any changes in my relationships, however I enjoy talking with my natural sisters-getting ideas etc. I have found that ladies in my age range (55-70) that are natural have their hair cut very close because they just wash n go. I’m almost at that mindset myself, LOL!!
    2. Much better for week 4. Used it as my pre-poo w/evoo & honey, used it on my edges and to seal my ends.
    3. I do feel a difference it’s thicker and probably longer (which is not a biggie for me). It does feel & look healthy and I hear that a lot.

  • Tiredofbeingbroke

duHave any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? I’m relaxed so this doesn’t apply to me.

How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I kept up with using JBCO on my edges and scalp. And also used it as a pre-poo with VO5. It helps alot with detangling. JBCO will continue to be a staple product. I’m adding it to my DC on a weekly basis. Am on a 6 month relaxer stretch. It has a made a huge difference in my new growth.

Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in
thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are
they growing in? i just did a trim before checking in so I can’t tell if there is a difference in length. However, I’ve seen a huge difference in my edges.

    1.  I’ve been doing a lot of “house cleaning” over the past year with my relationships.   I had one “acquaintance” tell me that I changed since going natural, but others told me they haven’t seen a change.  2. I met all of my goals last week.  I haven’t deviated from using castor oil in my daily or weekly regimen.  I have decided to return to using JBCO.  I’ve seen some progress with the castor oil that I purchased from Target, but I want to return to using JBCO.
    3.  My edges are coming in slowly.  The hair is pretty fine, but it’s there.

  • Letticia

Hey Jenell!! Great results! I can really see the difference, congrats!

    1. Honestly, I’ve made tons of friends because of my hair…and all the friends that I had when I was relaxed are so supportive. They all tell me how much they love my hair. I think that the confidence I’ve gained with natural hair really shines through, so I’ve had no negative responses.
    2. Last week was another great week, I kept up with my schedule. Also, I still don’t need to wash my hair every week…the castor oil is keeping dandruff away and I’m able to go 2 weeks (or more) without washing.
    3. You know, I think that I’m definitely seeing a difference in thickness and fullness. Also in shine. My ends were ratchet so I had to take about 1/2 inch off this past weekend…however, my hair is looking absolutely amazing now. I’m really pleased with the changes I’m seeing!

I have met a lot of newer naturals in the last 2 yearsHow did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? The week started off great but then followed a crazy hectic week and I don’t remember anything after Wed.. I didn’t meet my goal.. I only did my edges 2x and my scalp 1xBased on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in? Yes, I can see your edges growing in!!!

  • allicia forde

    1. My friendships have pretty much stayed the same..people are more accepting of natural hair than I initially thought.

    2. I struggled to carry through with my goals because I became very busy..lots and lots of university work piled up :( ..I did manage to oil my scalp twice during wk 4.

    3. I don’t notice any difference apart from monthly hair growth :(  I do think that the castor oil offers a false sense of thickness for me :( ..once its washed out of my hair..my hair resumes to its normal thickness.. Having said that..I think it did help a bit with my short pieces at the front of my head:)

I did enjoy this challenge though..learning with fella natural sistasssss

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?
In the beginning yes, because I started to be a natural and people would say, I was making myself too old.  Since I’ve been natural, most of the ladies I associate with are natural ladies anyway.

How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?No, I did not, I still sticking to my goals. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in

I have definitely seen a difference. As I have mentioned last week, my roots are getting thicker, plus, since I rinse daily, because I am coloured, my hair does not feel so dry.

Everytime I come here to sighin I want to thank you for this challenge! It has made me more aware of my hair and made me more willing to take better care of it!
1- my relationships have changed for the better I think. I feel that going natural has helped me clean up my lifestyle altogether. Going natural has just forced me to make changed in the food that I eat, the quality of my things that I consume on all levels. That said, not everyone likes to see people change, therefore I have lost some friends. But at the same time, I have gained many freinds who want to learn about how i achieve what I have in terms of lifestyle changes! I’ve been asked to make products for cowkers, inspired people to start using more natural/organic products … The friends i’ve lost were never friends. Even my freinds who are relaxed have made the decision to keep their daughters natural and enlisted m =y help. So my freindshios/relationships have evolved also.
2- i always keep up witht eh massaging, but this week i actually kept up with the oiling also! I have just been trying to oil at different times when I know i won;t be bzor i try to multitask- watching TV and oiling, or b4 I shower I oil in front of the mirror. But massaging- i got this one down pack- i massage my scalp in the operating room, at home, in the car, etc …
3- my hair has GROWN so much! I can’t wait to do a lenght check. i will post pix on my next weigh in! most importantly, it is so soft adn looks healthy!!!!!

    1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? Hmm the relationships that have changed for me are with my two little girls, and with family and co workers . With my girls they have a new found since of their hair being beautiful, back when my hair was relaxed they would constantly talk about wanting to have their hair flat ironed and want to play in my hair and say ” mommy i love your hair ” . Now they see me rocking the natural hair and while I don’t let them play in my hair anymore , they say they love their afro, kinky curly coily hair and that makes me happy. They still love straight hair too but that’s fine with me.With my family ,co -workers, and friends we now have more to talk about. The ones that are natural we talk about our hair routines, and those who are curious or want to become natural ask lots of questions and make comments all the time .2.How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Week4 was ok for me every time I set my hair in braids which was about every night I put some CO on my scalp and ends, I washed my hair and used CO as a pre poo with shea moisture hair mask. Challenges I have had are just being consistent with my routine, keeping my hair covered at night was a big challenge for me, I’ve gotten much better.3.Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in
thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are
they growing in? It seems like my hair is getting thicker, and I do notice a little extra length .

Great!! !Did you follow through with your goals? I think I am actually paying more attention to my hair during this challlenge and I am seeing growth now. I am using doo grow thickening as well as the castor oil..I think it has castor oil in it as well. I am also going to be using castor oil pomade…seems like pomades keeps my hair from the frizzys…works well for me.Any challenges thus far? Not now. I think i have my hair under control for now at least…(smile)Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on your edges, are they growing in? Edges are growing in slowly.

  • @naturalsistagrl

    1.  The only relationships that have really changed since I’ve become natural is basically the one with my hair stylist and the with my mom.  Of course my stylist relationship has changed for obvious reasons.  But my mom and I have become closer because we are bonding over hair related conversations.  She also went natural after seeing my progress with my hair.

    2.  I did about the same as previous weeks.  Using 3x’s per week to seal and also once a week for scalp massage and along the edges.

    3.  My hair has gotten a little thicker and my edges are filling in nicely.

1.) None of my relationships have really changes since going Natural I still have all the same friends although I would love to have more curly friends.
2.) I did ok last week I am continuing using my caster oil mix or spray on a daily so I am hanging in there.
3.) I have noticed a major change in my hair it seems a lot thicker and Have retain a lot of growth so far mainly in my problem area of my hair which is the nape area so things are going really well so far.

<I had my hair in mini twists but I did pretty well. I applied to my edges and my scalp and sealed with the oil.
3.I can see a slight growth in length and definitely my hair has become so much thicker thank goodness. I was focusing on my edges and I am definitely impressed with the way my edges have started to grow in. Hope to see much more growth later on. Am so hyped right now.

Pics show changes in my edges.

    1. Relationships change since going natural – nope. All my previous friends are still my friends, have made lots of new ones though because of my decision to go natural.  Seems everybody loves talking about transitioning to/being a natural.  It’s great!
    2.  Last week was horrible, didn’t hit ANY of my goals! Death in the family, family sickness, my own sickness – nope, didn’t think much about my hair except getting it “fixed” enough for hospital visits, funerals….
    3.  Wasn’t planning on doing a length check yet, but I guess I’d better – lol. My 1 year transitionversary is in 14 days!! I was gonna wait until then, but I’ll post pics as soon as I can.

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? None of my relationships have changed since all of my close friends are also naturalistas. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I did pretty well. I was able to do a deep condition with castor oil as well as a prepoo with it. Happy that I had two more uses to my regular uses. Will be continuing with this new routine.Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on your edges, are they growing in? I think I see a difference but I am not sure. Some of my pictures I’ve taken I can’t tell. I’m not sure if its the angle I am taking it or the flash since the hair on the edges was thin to begin with and the flash makes it harder to see if there is new growth. Other pictures I can see a little difference. Length-wise it seems to have grown a little.

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?

No, none of my relationships really changed since I went natural.

How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did better than I did in week 3, but I will be picking up the pace for the rest of the challenge because I got busy and slacked off. The only challenge is remembering to apply at night.

Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in?

I can’t tell a major difference in growth, but that is because my hair is in mini twists. I have the same length all around still, I think that if I were to take out my twists and measure than I might possibly see growth. Although I did a trim at the beginning of the challenge, so maybe my hair has caught back up. I definitely have seen growth in my trouble area, the back of my head and my eyebrows and I’m so happy about that ! I can kind of tell with my edges though, which is great, they were never a problem area, but its nice to see them thicken up. Thickness ? Most definitely.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Awesome. Cant wait to hear about your results when you take your twists down.

Hey All I hope all is well with you . As for me and my growth I don’t know if I see any as of yet but I will post pictures for you to be the judge. I have had no relationship changes since I have become natural. I think that is because I wear it with confidence and keep it pushing…
I didn’t quite do anything over the weekend I went back to my hometown and tried to get wedding stuff completed but I know I used the castor oil at least 4 times last week so that is good.

    1. I have many new natural friends and relationships, but I still have many relaxed friends, we just don’t talk about natural hair as I do with my new friends. :)

     2. I did the minimum 3 days last week and I didn’t add it to my DC as I planned but that works :)
    3. I definitely see a difference in length and thickness, my edges which are my main concern are filling in nicely too.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Awesome Job Vee!

I too don’t spend hours talking about hair the way my natural friends do.

    1.  None of my relationships have changed since going natural.  I have encouraged others to go natural and they have embarked on this journey and new found freedom lol.  (My daugher, one of my closest friends and I’ve noticed members of my church and other women have decided to go natural and are asking me questions lol lol lol)2.  I am continuing on with my goals. No challenges thus far.  For me it has become routine a habit.  3. I can see and feel the difference.  I love the way my hair feels.

  • Chaneal

The only difference in my relationships is that I get a lot more attention from my friends regarding my hair and some have even decided to go natural. I haven’t had any challenges so far and I haven’t noticed much growth. Hopefully I will soon tho.

  • Growtotheflow

I see a difference in the way I’m more apt to talk to curly haired strangers. It’s a great intro for meeting new people and sharing helpful haircare tips/products.
I eased up a little this week and my hair is seeing the difference :-/. I’ve been addicted to how soft my ends have gotten…gonna have to take better care because they looked a little frayed & thirsty this morning.
I see a difference in length, can’t wait to snap another pic and get the measuring tape out.

  • Jennfer

    1. No, none of my friendships have changed since going natural.
    2. I did ok last week, same as the previous weeks. The only challenge I have is keeping my protective styles looking fresh, longer than 2 days.
    3. I see a slight difference in thickness. As far as length, my sides, bangs and edges are growing nicely. About an inch or more in retaining length. But the back of my hair hasn’t seen much of a difference. I don’t mind too much, because I am trying to grow my layers out, to get even out hair.

  • Nakia Davis

No really changed but I have been inspirational enough that others went natural. I think I did good last week. I am still being very consistent. I can tell I have gain some length. I have not seen any difference with thickness so far!

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?Well, I keep my circle of friends small. But I have been meeting more women who are natural and just compliments from people I don’t know. As far as men are concerned, I have been getting more compliments from older guys. And most importantly, the relationship I have with myself has changed. Chardi (my hair) can be disrespectful at times but some eye makeup and earrings puts her right in her place. I love myself even more. And my daughter loves her afro puff, so that’s my motivation. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?I think this week, I didn’t use it 7 days just 5. I was tired this week.  Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on your edges, are they growing in? My edges are filling in. I see less breakage. I had to dust my ends however, Chardi has grown about 1/2 inch.

  • Kimlbrown8

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? Yes. If so, how so? I now have a group of women that are considering going natural asking me questions about what they should do.How did you do last week (week 4)? I did okay. Did you follow through with your goals? Yes. I was able to keep up with my 3X per week goal. Any challenges thus far? Yes. I see a lot of thickening of my hair.Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? Yes in both. For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in? My edges are growing as well.

I see a little difference in both thickness and growth

  • chi11factor11

    1. No, none of my relationships have changed, I have been natural most of my adult life. This time I cut off my dreadlocksafter growing them out for ten years.  I did have family members to say that I shouldn’t cut them off, but nothing changed after the big chop.
    2. Last week was fine, I followed my goals, there were no challenges.
    3. I have seen a little difference in the length of my hair.

  • Ashley Scott

I’d have to say the only change in my relationships would be that I’ve made a lot of new friendships or closer friendships with other naturals especially some of my friends that are just starting their natural journey.  I did ok last week I’ve been so super busy and I’m always busy but this wek has just been something else. I havent even had the energy to twist my hair up at night. I’ve been rockn a puff and simply putting some castor oil on my scalp tying my hair down and putting on my cap, then in the morning wetting the puff rubbing castor oil on my ends and heading out the door. I have noticed a difffernce in my hair and my edges I dont know if the pix really show it but I feel like I see a difference the pix on the left is at the start of the challenge and then now. Maybe its not super noticeable but its progress to me!

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so? I have a lot more naturalistas for friends and I’ve discovered that a lot of men prefer my hair in its natural state to when I wear it straight. But otherwise, I haven’t burned any bridges because I went natural. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Been doing the bare minimum (3x a week) =/ But I took my sew-in down so now I can really focus on my scalp!Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in? I definitely see a difference in length, most likely due to castor oil + protective style. Not focusing on my edges, but I do have a sparse patch near my right temple that seems to be growing in a little. My hair is really thick already! My mom is scared for me. LOL
(on a library computer that won’t let me upload my pics… I’ll try from another computer for the next check-in)

    Check In Questions:

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?  Nope! My friends loved me the same before and after.  I met my boyfriend right as I began transitioning and he has no probs at all with me being fully natural.  He even speaks on how much it has grown and he remember when it was a liitle puff :) How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?It may be paranoia but I feel like the crown of my head is thinning.  I cant see my scalp through my hair but its just when I feel it it seems thinner.  Again I could be imagining it.  I HOPE its my imagination.Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in
thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are
they growing in? I see length growth at the front and back.  My front always grows thick and long.  I wish I could implant the front of my hair to the rest of my scalp.

  • Valerie

    Hello All,

I use castor oil on my edges.  Not sure if Isee any difference yet. willl take photo. Love the way my hair feels.  love it so soft….

Check In Questions: OH NO I DIDN’T ALMOST FORGET :) Been EXTRA! Busy!
1> Not really i have a pretty weird and different personality and people that know me know that i change up my hair most of the time. So not at all, except guys are more curious about my hair but still the same vibe…2> I made sure i was consistent last week cause i slipped the week before and i FINALLY GOT! the perfect flat twist out! woot! but then the houston weather was like umm nooo i don’t think so SHRINK! -______-… but my scalp is getting better.3> Edges are doing pretty good actually and the length might be about half an inch growth from just looking at the pics

  • Kristin M.

    1. I’ve have very supportive/positive friends and family and no one batted an eyelash when I transitioned to natural hair. From my perspective they accepted it as a different hairstyle than the slicked ponytails they were used to seeing me wear.2. Last week I did really well. I find it’s not hard to remember to apply the castor oil because I keep it on a shelf right at my eye level, and it’s now my sole go-to hair product for a dry scalp and I CAN’T STAND having a dry scalp. However, I do need to learn better when to lay off the stuff. The oil finds its way down the shafts of my hair and prevents water from passing into the cuticles. This doesn’t happen all the time, just a couple of days after a co-wash.3. I haven’t noticed a significant increase in the growth of my edges or my hair overall. It’s happily growing at a normal rate:) At least it’s not breaking.

Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in

1.Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?
No, none of my relationships have changed since going natural.
2.How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? This week, I did not do as well as I would have liked. I was sick for a couple of days so I was unable to pamper my hair.3.Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in
thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are
they growing in?I am focusing on my edges, there is very little notice of change.

P.S. I was not able to upload my before pics :-? Sorry

  • Tiffany Williams

    1. None of my friends or family relationships have changed besides the joking of my hair being “nappy” but it comes with the change. However, now when men talk to me sometimes I get a little offensive when they say they would rather I straighten my hair. About to pink slip one now lol.2. Last week was pretty normal although I have been struggling with continuing with this challenge, but I’m still going strong.3. Based on my pics, I can finally see that my hair is actually growing, but I’m not sure if I can credit that to the castor oil. We’ll see.

1.) Relationships havent changed too much. My best friend loves my natural hair and she’s worn weaves most of her life. I did think it was kind of weird that our stylist (that I certainly don’t go to much more since BCing) immediately discouraged her from seeing what her natural hair was doing under those weaves. But I’m not one to negatively speculate, but I think it would be nice if my friend even just took a break from weave. I like that my little sister is much more interested in wearing her hair natural and curly, we just need to work on her keeping it healthy.
2.) This week I had actually oil rinsed with 1/2 castor and evoo. I actually don’t think the results were remarkable, but I think it’s because I must have a moisture/protein imbalance. My hair has been super dry lately. I may henna soon to try and seal up these ends that are still red.
3.) I know i was complaining about not seeing any difference. but WOW! I see it. I’m sure I see more than a half inch.. perhaps inch of new growth. And I may amp up on my edged because they are actually coming in outta nowhere!
I’M GETTING EXCITED!! and I’m so glad that I am actually sticking with something.

  • natasha coleman

    1. Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? If so, how so?None of my relationships have changed since going natural. Many of my friends have gone natural within the past year, so I don’t have anything to worry about! I do get a lot of questions at work though.

    2. How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did great last week! I’ve started to use the castor oil more often now…exceeding my goals! It’s great. I can really tell that my hair is super soft and not as course as it used to be before starting the challenge. I also feel as if my hair is more manageable.

    3. Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in?

I can see a difference in the thickness of my hair as well as the length in certain places. My back has the most length and the middle of my hair is okay, but I’m focused on getting the front to a reasonable length, especially the sides.

Have any of your relationships changed since going natural? talk and meet a lot of new naturals If so, how so? Get great information! Thanks KCCM!How did you do last week (week 4)? Did you follow through with your goals? Yes I did with my 3x a week still doing that and more when I can.   Any challenges thus far? Not sure but either the castor oil or my new coconut oil (or could have been the heat) caused a slight breakout or irritaion on my neck/shoulder.Based on your length check pics, can you see a difference in thickness or length yet? haven’t measured yet. For those of you focusing on  your edges, are they growing in? I think they are!
