Castor Oil Challenge Week 11 Check In

By Jenell — August 10, 2012

Friday Aug 10, 2012 – Thursday Aug 16, 2012

If you didn’t join the challenge in the beginning I’m sorry, it’s too late. You can participate in the Fall challenge (Sept 1- Dec 1). Go Here to register.

Can you believe we have only 2 more weeks to go!

I can’t believe that this challenge is almost over, like I feel like we just started the other day and Sept 1 is almost right around the corner.  Please be ready for our final length check during week 13, the final week.

Don’t forget that you can save 10% on all your jbco purchases from OilsFromJamaica when you use the code KCCM10.

Check In Questions:

1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?

2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

My answers:

1. Absolutely!!! I love love love meeting new women and talking about hair. I also enjoy expos because there is a lot to learn and lots of good deals on products and merchandise. This year I’ve been hosting events like crazy. I love it!

2. I did great girls! I surpassed my goals and I’ve had no challenges. I am definitely going out with a bang as planned.  I applied JBCO to my scalp, 4 nights. But I used Moroccan oil on my hair.

3. This has been an amazing experience! I’ve always enjoyed taking care of my hair and I’ve learned so much over the past 11 weeks. For one, Castor Oil is the Biz-omb! Two, although my hair doesn’t need to be moisturized daily, it really really likes it. I always thought my hair would be weighed down or greasy from too much oil, but castor oil does not cause this to happen.

Do you Tweet? If so use hashtag #KCCM so we all can follow the convo. Feel free to include me @BlakIzBeautyful

Keep encouraging eachother, you all are doing soo well! Don’t forget the grand prize for the challenge is a Huetiful Steamer!

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?

I haven’t yet, mostly due to scheduling conflicts, but I plan to soon!

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

Last week I did well. I think I may have skipped just one day oiling my edges.

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

I think it’s helped me to commit to a regimen which will in turn help me to do the same with my whole hair regimen once i’m out of the protective styling stages of my transition.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Commitment. I love it.

  • Onyinyedike

    1. I attend natural hair meet-ups here in Nigeria…they don’t occur too frequently so i am always excited when there one to go to. I get to meet new people, buy hair products and other items that are not readily available and we get to talk HAIR! :)

    2. Week 10 was great. I did good, castor oil/jojoba mix on scalp and edges daily, castor oil while moisturizing 4 times that week. *pattingmyselfontheback*

    3. Awesome experience, Breakage has reduced dramatically, moisture retention is on point too especially when hair is in protective style. Castor oil is the one for me, lol. One thing i have learnt doe is JBCO is superior to all others. Can’t wait for the fall challenge, gonna tell my friends about it.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Breakage reduction is major!

      • onyinyechi uwakwemdike

yes….if you just let your hair be *sigh* i have another chance though, the fall challenge is here :) week 11 check in

  • Richelle Thomas

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not? I don’t but would love to. I live in the Caribbean so we don’t really have natural hair events. I do talk to my friends about hair all the time though!
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Last week was great. I’m loving Senegalese twists, it makes applying my castor oil so much easier. The only challenge I really experience is the hard water here. I find it much more difficult to keep my hair soft and detangled than I did in the states so I (gasp!) stopped washing my hair as often and put it in these twists because I don’t want to pull my hair out.
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? So far so good. I haven’t been taking a ruler to my hair every week or anything but it is noticeably longer than it was at the beginning of the challenge. I learned that my hair likes to be left alone!! It grows so much better when I just leave it be

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Leave me be! Haha

No I haven’t, not yet anyway.  I’m a very busy curlie girlie!!

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did GREAT!!!  I did follow thru with my goals and no challenges.

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

This has been an awesome experience.  I have learned a lot about my hair and have enjoyed taking care of it.  My hair loves castor oil, and it responds by being VERY soft.  I LOVE IT!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

When you enjoy taking care of your hair, it will flourish.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=20203287 Timia Jacobs

. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not? I do not attend them, we don’t have many here and when we do have them, they’re held on weekends and I work weekends.2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I struggled this past week but I am back on track now and will finish strong!! I have seen a lot of growth!!
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? I’ve had a lot of fun paying attention to my hair. I will be entering the next challenge more focused.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Focus and determination?

  • http://twitter.com/lez_not No.

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not? I haven’t beca7de it seems everything happened when I left the city but I plan too!

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Yes yes! I did my scalp massages and put it on my edges every night

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? It helped me learn a lot. My hair is very healthy now and I know what type of products it likes and doesn’t. My hair likes attention, it grew a lot with the sew in but it seems like even more without it

  • Ikila Saunders

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?

I have not attended a lot of events as I live in So Cal and there has not been a ton in these parts. However, I am starting to see the landscape slowly shifting and So Cal is becoming more and more natural hair focused which means more events coming out way. As time permits, I will be there!! LA CURLY GIRLS is one of the groups I belong to and its a fun and knowledgeable group of women. I love meeting up and learning from those ladies.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

In a word — AMAZING! I added JBCO in my DC, to my edges 6 evenings and to my product in my twist out 4 days! No challenges… Im coasting now! *doesthedougie*

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

My experience has been sepectaular! I was helped me to commit to a routine and having to check-in has made me accountable. I have learned so much about what my hair likes, needs and thrives with… and thats JBCO, bay-bay!!! Fall challenge, here-I-come!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Don’t you just love accountability? Lol

      • Ikila Saunders

        I really do! hehehe

  • Chamcmillan

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?

I have in the past attended natural hair events and expos. Sometimes they can be overwhelming.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did follow through with my goals of applying JBCO 3x a week to my edges.

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

I have learned that the JBCO has helped with my edges growing back in after postpardum shedding. Not a whole lot like I envisioned but still more than what it use to be.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

My edges have been growing back since the post partum too thanks to co.

    1. Do you attend Natural Hair events? Why/Why not?

Yes, but not for too much longer! I love natural hair meetups and I can get so much inspiration and support from attending. Being that I am the only Natural Hair Diva in my circle of friends so to be around other women ( and sometimes men) who love and embrace their natural hair is fulfills the other side of me. But as the Natural Hair World expands in the Tri State Area (i live in Jersey) so do the events and the Egos…. Sometimes it’s a bit overwhelming to try to go to the sometimes costly events and try to just get tips and tricks, but the presenters and hosts or hostesses are stuck in their circles and unwilling to share their tips and tricks with you, it’s unfortunate..I often hear them say watch my video on YT to see how i achieved this style or didn’t you read my blog! That’s what has begun to turn me off. So my goal in 2013 is to start my own meetup events and do away from the BIG commericalized overpriced overpopulated events.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did very well last week, I DC once and steamed twice. I really paid most attention to my edges with the nightly JBCO massages. But I did my scalp massages about 3 times this week. I followed through with all goals i set. The only challenge I had was once again have to run to the BSS for a JBCO restock… Lol

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

My experience was great and awesome! I really followed through with the check ins (thanks for the reminders) and I am looking forward to super thickness and growth now that I have the tools to do the job! I have learned that with a little patience and consistency this will all pay off.

i love the way ur hair goes down I would cut the sidw of my hair lime urs but my hair goes up

        • http://twitter.com/ThatDivaJ ✨Jay✨

Hey NaturalBeauti is shaved all around and when I twist my hair I almost always twist it to one side to get the side cut effect.

      • Tazzee

Cute! My beach hair is usually a big fro, LOL

        • http://twitter.com/ThatDivaJ ✨Jay✨

You may want to two strand twist your hair before you go to the beach. Twisting it with some cheapie condish and seal it with oils will keep it twisted and soft even if your hair gets wet by the salty ocean water. HTH

    • http://twitter.com/HerNameisNic Nic Lucien

That’s the fear I have about going to meetups J.A.S. I don’t have many naturals in my circle of friends and I would hate to be brave, go solo and deal with stuck up naturals. When you plan an event, please let us know… I would love to go to supportive, informative natural hair events!

      • http://twitter.com/ThatDivaJ J.A.S

Most definetly Nic! I will let you know. I went and still go solo, just so I can experience the events on my own. And I have met so many very very nice curlies…but then when you come across the not so nice ones it puts a damper on the entire purpose….

      • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Too bad you two aren’t here in NYC. My dinner with the CurlFriends is the only event that makes you make friends. Lol

        • http://twitter.com/HerNameisNic Nic Lucien

Jenell, I am in NYC! Again, I have just been to chicken to go. Though I must admit, I have been thinking of making the next dinner with Curlfriends my first event. I like how there are a limited number of spots! Helps with feeling overwhelmed. Maybe you’ll see me in September! ;)

          • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

            Too chicken? STOP IT!
The sept dinner is almost full.

        • http://twitter.com/ThatDivaJ ✨Jay✨

Jenell and Nic, I am so late with this reply, but I am from NYC and I currently live in NJ. I have been a little turned off by meetups, I have seen your events I may try to come out to one of your Dinners though.

    1. I haven’t attended any natural hair events. There isn’t much in my area.

    2. In week 10, I met my goals. I oiled my scalp 4 times and sealed my hair once with castor oil.

    3. In this challenge I have learned a lot and experimented with mixing my own products. I have managed to take care of my natural hair without the use of heat and that has been the best thing about this challenge for me. I have become more aware of my hair growth, how to treat my scalp, and my normal shedding rate.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      No heat! Woohoo!

  • candisrainey

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
No I haven’t, never really thought about it or heard of any near me
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
    Yes I did, no challenges
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
    Ive learned to be patient

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Patience is a virtue.

  • http://twitter.com/HerNameisNic Nic Lucien

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
I haven’t attended any natural hair events as I haven’t gotten the courage to go solo ( I heard they can be overwhelming) LOL but I plan to go to one soon. I hate seeing the pics and feeling like I missed out on the goodies! I think I may start with smaller events with limited guests, like the monthly dinners Jenell holds, to get me going. Maybe see you for September???
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
Last week was great! I wanted to bounce back since I slacked off the week before and focused on diet and exercise. This week I seem to have all gears going. I did fall off a little on the workout but my hair and diet have been great! I continued with using JBCO as a pre-poo, sealer and during scalp massages. I ham happy with my growth and thickness so far. I am looking forward to setting up my first natural haircut soon to see how my new curls will look with some shape.
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
This challenge was great and I want to continue into the fall. *going to register after this post* LOL. I realized that before this challenge I did not use Castor Oil as much as I should because I was afraid of how heavy the oil is. I was worried I would look like a big grease ball. I am happy that I learned how to use it in my everyday routine and not have it weigh down my hair. This challenge has really challenged me to figure out how to use JBCO on my fine strands and I am glad I did. I am reaping the rewards!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Lol well I’m happy u don’t look like a grease ball too!

      • http://twitter.com/HerNameisNic Nic Lucien

LOL Me too! Glad I figured out light application. With my heavy hands, my hubby hated waking up to castor soaked pillows!

    • NatashaP

I hope you do come out to the “dinner with curl friends” events in August and/or September. I roll solo and have felt very comfortable.

      • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

The Aug dinner is sold out. The Sept dinner is selling fast.

      • http://twitter.com/HerNameisNic Nic Lucien

Thanks Natasha! That’s good to hear! Are you going to the September dinner. You ladies have me really tempted to buy my ticket!

  • http://twitter.com/humbly4real Stanethia R. Miller

    I. I’ve never attended a natural hair event. I don’t really have the funds or resources to do so but I hope I can one day!

    2. I did fine last week! I use my castor oil as my sole sealant moisturizer (besides water).

    3. This challenge reminded me how great castor oil has been to my hair. Mixed with glycerin, I use it on freshly co-washed hair and I rub it all over my hair while it’s dripping wet. I braid it up at night and then take it down in the morning for a textured style and also to prevent tangles! I must say I fell in love with castor oil all over again! I’ll never remove it from my regimen again!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Reunited and it feels soo good!

    Week 11 Check In Questions:
    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not? I have not attended any natural hair events; Not aware of any either.
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Last month I missed several check-in. Previous weeks, I experimented with several hair products. This week I am finally happy with KCKT & KCCC.
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? I have learned how to care for natural hair.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Great lesson.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/ER3D45M4M464TFNEDI3R4GVKIA Jae

    1. Yes, whenever one is in my area. I just attended my first big hair expo this past weekend and loved. I hope to attend more.2. I did great last week, all goals were met and I had no challenges. My hair is seeing great results from this challenge.
    3. My experience has been noting but positive, I have Lupus and it is very challenging for my hair to grow, but with castor oil I’m seeing great results for the fist time. I’ve learned the importance of takinging care of the ends od my hair.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

I am sooooo happy that you shared this. I would love to interview you about your condition and how castor oil has helped.

  • Michele

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not? Yes, I attend natural hair events and I also organize and host natural hair seminars for over 6 years now. I thoroughly enjoying teaching other ladies how to embrace their naturalness.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I did great. I used JBCO in my prepoo, oiled my scalp 4x and sealed my ends with it as well as massage my scalp. No challenges, I was experiencing itchy scalp but I started mixing it with other oils to use on my scalp.

3 How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? It was wonderful. I remember the elders in my village using it in their hair and their hair was always thick, long and very healthy. I have learnt that JBCO loves my hair and my hair loves it back. It is in my regimen forever!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Isn’t LOVE great? I’m happy I introduced your hair to its soul mate. Lol

    • http://twitter.com/HerNameisNic Nic Lucien

Hey Michele, Where are you located? I would love to attend hair seminars, as I am just celebrating my one year healthy hair anniversary and am always looking for more info.

  • tanisha v

    1.  i love natural hair events, it gives me so many hair ideas from other women.  and even if i have a bad hair day i feel at home around other naturals

    2.  i did good no problems at all

    3. castor oil is already a part of my weekly regime so its been a normal experience for me. i would say i learned there is no major difference betwwen jbco and home health except the price

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Good lesson.

  • Corylc39

     1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?

I used to when I lived in Milwaukee, but not so much here in San Antonio because they don’t have a lot of them here.  I am attending one in September The Armed Forces Natural Hair & Health Expo on the 2nd…..I’m so excited!!!

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did well with my goals last week!

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

My experience with castor oil has been good, it keeps my hair moisturized very well.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Moisture!

    • Tazzee

My sister lives in San Antonio. I have to tell her about the event on the 2nd because she’s been struggling with her natural hair journey. Thanks for sharing that info.

  • IamboredSinger

    1. no because i never can find any in my area

2.i did great and followed through with all my goals there were no challenges

3.i did great and learned how much i love castor oil

  • Thianita

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
I do not (or have not yet) because I’m not aware of where they are going on in my area. I know that might sound stupid, being that I’m in Chicago, but it’s the truth.  I once tried to join a natural hair meetup, but it never got off the ground.  THAT SAID, most of the girls in my social meetup are natural anyway! lol.
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I guess I didn’t do as well as other weeks, but I know why.  I had to compensate for a flaky episode, so I was realllly careful with product this week.  Anybody who’s ever had seborrheic dermatitis or any sort of dandruff problem knows what I’m talking about.  I had washed normally at the end of last week (and did my JBCO then) and then I co-washed mid week, because things felt a little dry, and did my little JBCO steam then. Oh wait–then I added some to my edges one night, so I guess I did do at least 3x/week.  I was going with the “mean and clean” deal this week–had my hair up in a pony most of the week to keep it away from lint sources and oil.
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
I have learned that your hair really responds to how you love it.  I also learned that how you love your hair is really a reflection of how you love yourself.  When I spend time doing my hair, it’s like this wonderful experience. I feel so relaxed and cherished, and it’s always something I look forward to.  HA! Bet some people thought I’d never say THAT! I also learned that I need to be more adventurous with my locs, after seeing all of the styles that people post here. Although my hair isn’t “free,” it’s long enough to stop just putting it up or wearing it down.  I need to start EXPRESSING myself!

    • Thianita

P.S., I got some JCBO stuff for my mom for the bald spot on the back of her head and it TRULY IS FILLING IN!! She has a TWA.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      AMEN!!!!!
That is the KEY! Loving yourself and your hair and they will love you back!

  • Symone Michelle

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
No I don’t, I am looking to start though!

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I did great! I love castor oil so much now that I need to buy like a gallon of it, any suggestions? Thats my challenge lol

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
I’ve learned that my hair really does not require as much products as I try to force on it!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1639362303 Monique Grannum

Unfortunately there are no natural hair meet and greets where I live. I really do want to attend one someday.

I stuck to my 3-4 time a week application of the JBCO. I even did a prepoo last night using the oil with conditioner. So that’s a bonus for me this wee

Time really did fly by with this challenge. I think the biggest thing I will take away is learning to take time to take care of my hair. A little TLC goes a long way! I enjoyed learning from everyone and being part of this journey. My hair absolutely loves loves JBCO. Thanks Jenell for putting us on to this amazing product!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Yup TLC does the trick.
      You’re welcome.

     Check In Questions:

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
I have once, it was amazing and fun. I don’t go often b/c I haven’t had the money to go, but I just got a new job, and there are other things that I need to get before I can start doing things that I want.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
Last week was great. I’m maintaining, and things seems to be going well

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
Its been great. I am more aware of my hair. Not that I didn’t know how to maintain it, but in a way you can say that I have a better relationship with my hair.

  • Tazzee

    1. I have not attended any natural hair events mainly because of my schedule. I usually find out about the local events a day or two before the event. By that time, I already have plans. I hope to attend one soon.

    2. I started this week bad because I went out of town and forgot all my hair products. I finally figured how to pack some JBCO and then I left my bag of liquids on my bathroom counter – so I went 3 days with no application. Once I got back home, I applied to my scalp and edges daily.

    3. I’ve enjoyed this experience. Since this is my second challenge I haven’t learned anything new about CO but I am using JCBO this time and I love the lavender! I also learned the benefit of using the applicator bottle – I used to use my finger for scalp application – the bottle helps me maintain my parts when wearing twists. My hair stays nice and soft and I am loving my growth.

How long is your hair now-front, sides, and back?My hair is currently shoulder length to be specific it is roughly 14inches in the front, 15.5 inches in the very center, 12 inches on mysides, and 14 inches behind my ear in the back3.How will you be using your Castor Oil?I will be massaging my scalp with the oil 4x a week minimum and I willalso use it to seal my hair after spritzing with water 3-4x a week

    • Jm351224

      Sorry!!!

  • Funkystarkitty50

     1. Do you attend natural hair events? I have been to a few of them. Schedule and location have been problems for me.
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? There is a increase in thickness in some areas of my scalp, still the edges are thin or nonexistent.

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? I guess I expected to fully get my edges back, but with certain medical challenges, it just didn’t happen. Once I deliver, I will start with the scalp injections again, since I know that works. Otherwise,  I’ve noticed less shedding and breakage.

     1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
Not sure if there are any in Barbados

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did great I follows through with my goals. No challenges thus far

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

I was not sure that to expect from using Castor Oil. My hair is light and expected the oil to be heavy and oily. But my hair is loving the oil and the TLC it is getting from me, and I am learning to love my hair. Thanks Jenell and I have already signed up for the Fall challenge.

      You’re welcome love.

    • NaturalBrown Beauties

Hi Cecilia. I am really thinking about starting one in BIM. I think it will be a great thing to have out there since there are so many naturals in Barbados. Email me if you would be interested in collaborating with me. I am trying to come out there before the end of the year. Naturalbrownbeauties2@gmail.com

  • NATURAL BEAUTI QUEEN

I have not attended any events as of yet. I did try to plan for a few but things kept coming up. I look forward to attending an events in Montgomery or Birmingham area. Because I have only been here in Montgomery for barely 1 year. I am despite, I want to meet new naturals just waiting on my chance to do so.

I have been wearing a protective style for the past two weeks. So I have been oiling my scalp every two days. Challenges, this is my first time using human hair for a protecttive style I don’t like it very much but I will keep it in for maybe another week then kinky twist.

This has been mostly a learning experience for me. I have made a few mistakes but for the most part I am having fun. Although I have been natural for almost two years I have no set regimen. This is the longest I have stuck with one oil but because I do alot of protective styles a set regimen is almost impossible. I love my hair but after a few weeks of twist out, braid out and afro styles back to my braids or twist.

I have two sisters who have joined me and I will be asling them to join me in the next challenge :)

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
No,,, Unfortunately, there are never any in my area…

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I did awesome— still going strong with my co-washing and usage of CO!

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? Truthfully, that all my other oils are not needed for my hair— CO is all I need and even after all the challenges, I am sticking to it… My Hair is so healthy and beautiful, and growing!!! I finally realized that it is growing– I have trimmed my hair twice on this challenge and my hair is still a little longer than when I started!!!!!

  • http://www.facebook.com/naturalbeautiqueen NaturalBeauti Hester

I have not attended any events as of yet. I have planned a few but something always comes up. But I am looking forward to participating in events in the Montgomery/ Birmingham area. I have been here roughly a year and I have no face to face connections with naturals. Im feeling a little left out.

I have been wearing a protective style for the past two weeks. I have been oiling my scalp every two days. Challenges, besides the fact I hate this human hair I will keep it in for another week or so then back to my kinky twist.

This has been mostly a learning experience for me. I can admit I have made a few mistakes but I am learning as I go. Its been almost 2 years and I can honestly say its been a mission possible.

I have two sisters who are now natural I will be asking them to join me in the next challenge

  • shanta ferguson

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/ Why not?
I have never attended a hair event. They seem to always conflict with my schedule. I plan to attend once very soon.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenge thus far?
I did pretty good last week. I am at times forgetting to use my Castor Oil but my nine year old always seems to remind me.

3.How would you describe your experience during this Castor Oil Challenge? What have you learned?
I have had an amazing experience during this challenge. I have learned to love my hair for every coil that I have. My hair has grown a lot and it’s healthy and thick. I must say that I have never had thick hair. But since this challenge it has gotten thick. I realized that I am not my hair and although my mom hates my natural look my three girls adore it as well as myself and my hubby. I love my hair. Tay-Tay does are thing everyday.. My hair has a name tay-tay.. lol

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Wow! It really go thicker. That’s amazing!

      • shanta ferguson

Yes it did. My hair has always been fine and going natural was because the perm was making it thinner tand causing breakage like never before. By the time I decided to go natural I had went from APL to 1/2 inch long in the middle and about nape of the neck length all over. So this challenge has given me thickness and growth. I am so excited

  • NatashaP

    1. I love meeting fellow naturalistas and learning about new products/techniques so I’m excited I’ve had the opportunity to attend a few events this year.
    2. I did well last week, used castor oil on my edges and sealing every other day.
    3. I’ve learned my hair LOVES castor oil like no other.

  • http://www.facebook.com/Kira0313 Shakira O’Garro

     1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
I’ve attended 3 events! However, KCCM meetups are the best! I attended in the summer to make new friends, ect. But just getting out for a night is fun as well.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
Not good. I’m about to move upstate for Grad School and I’ve been packing and being lazy. I’ll be back up to speed next week!

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
I would say awesome! I just love this castor oil. Once I finish up all my other oils, I might just stick with this one. I also learned the importance of sealing and oiling my scalp all over again. I get so lazy so I always skipped sealing and oiling my scalp. But my hair responds really well to it. I’ve also learned about the importance of consistency. I have so many products and rotate products almost weekly. But sticking with products has helped my hair. It’s like I know what to expect and my hair just responds better to consistency. No more experimentation with a crap load of products for me again…. Unless it’s from Shea Moisture. lmao

  • Tishana Trainor

    Ooh, I’m late! LOL

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not? Yes, I attend natural hair events. We have a few here in ATL that I like. I LOVE the swag bags!

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I did ok. I started cutting the cold pressed castor oil with coconut oil to loosen it some because I LOST my JBCO… In my house! WTH? I still followed thru and my wash and go lasted all week until yesterday morning when I cowashed. No challenges.

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? I would say this has been very helpful. I  have learned a good routine for my hair, which I didnt have before. I started using products with castor oil in it to boost the use of it, and I have whittled my product junkie habits down to using  just 7 products. This has made me happy, as I am 7 months post BC (I cut my locs after 10 years of growing them). I fell like I have guaranteed myself healthy hair because I have figured out how to care for it. :) This challenge has been SO awesome, I signed up for the Fall Challenge! Woot!

AND… My momma LOVES my hair… She has really loved my hair and my sister’s since we are growing it out.

AND, I ran into Jane Carter here in ATL, and she said my hair looked Amazing!

     1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
I have not attended any hair events because of scheduling conflicts.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I have done pretty well with my hair goals thus far

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
It has helped me tremendously. I am so happy that i have found a way to take care of my hair and hopefully it will continue to grow as planned.

  • http://twitter.com/lexluxxe Ms. Ocean

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
No, I’d love to though. I live in Philly so I have no excuse not to go to natural hair events.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? Yep, still going steady.

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? I enjoyed this challenge very much, especially since it’s the first one I’ve ever done/completed. The most important thing I’ve learned is how my hair works. My hair functions best when it’s constantly moisturized. I also learned a few more protective styles and conditioning recipes. Overall, this challenge really didn’t feel like a challenge so my experience was great. I love castor oil and how well it works for my hair.

  • http://www.facebook.com/sirabe76 Sha Springfield

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not? not big ones, I attend small gatherings because I just like to meet new people.
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? I did not meet any goals because I went on a trip and now cannot even find my oil :(
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? Castor oil is really thick and hard to put throughout the hair. I am still unsure about putting  it on my scalp but as a sealant it works great

  • Nell

    1. I don’t attend natural hair events because I usually don’t know about any in my area.
    2. I did pretty good last week. I didn’t apply castor oil every day but at least 3-4x this week
    3. My experience during this challenge was okay. I was excited in the beginning, then it dwindled, then I saw great results and I got excited again, but it dwindled. I think when I’m consistent I see growth, but my inconsistency inhibits my ability to obtain the amazing results I desire.

  • ELA

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
I try to. I have attended a few but need to improve on this. Why did I attend? – You meet people, you learn more about hair, it’s fun and of course the goody bags and freebies. Why haven’t I attended more? – They tend to be few and far between. I look at the US and there’s always something happening but the UK has not reached that place as yet.
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I’ve been doing superbly! Now that I added CO to my aloe vera juice, it’s definitely being used daily. I also seal with CO even with my twists in and my edges, oh yes! They have been getting CO every other day. Last week I added CO and other oils to my DC. So CO has been on my scalp and in my hair at least daily one way or the other :)
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
I’m starting to learn what my hair loves and what it doesn’t. I’m also more structured with my hair and it loves the consistency too. So although this was a CO challenge, I have learnt much more than the benefits of CO. I have learnt how to maintain healthy hair and my hair has thanked me for it :D

  • Amber Plummer

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?

Yes I do, I love seeing other naturals and hearing about their journey. Hair events gives you ideas of how to maintain, care, an d style your hair if you ever need other ways to do so.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

I did well. I have another protective style in but I can get to my scalp with my oil and message my edges.

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

My hair has gotten thicker and has grown quite a bit, at least an inch. I’m wondering why I was never using JBCO from the beginnning.

  • http://twitter.com/1Khyrra miakhyrra

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? No, I haven’t had the pleasure just yet.  Why/Why not?  No special reason. I actually browse around for different events when I can remember. I tell myself I’m going to start going out and meeting new people but I either forget or something else comes up.  :(

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?  I did pretty good.  My rhassoul treatment went even better since using castor oil in my mix.  I think this latest mix is a keeper.

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? this challenge has made me step up in maintaining the regimen I’d created then slacked off for myself.  I’ve learned that anything worth having takes consistency & discipline; including healthy hair. :)

Have a wonderful  Monday everybody!!!!!! :D

  • Norkita White

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
-I currently do not attend hair events because there are none available in my area. I would love to but I cannot afford to travel to other cities to do so, however, if I am able to put one together with product sponsers that would be great!!!!!!
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?-I did great, only challenge that I had was that I ran out of JBCO, I had to order some more.
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
-I have learned the powers of JBCO, I love it!!!!!!!!!!!! Not only has my hair grown and gotten thicker and healthier, but so had my nails and my eyebrows!!!!! I will continue to use it even after the challenge!!!

  • http://twitter.com/Takesha1 Curly Chocolate

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
Yes I do and I love it especially your events Jenell because I never come home empty handed. Swag bags !!
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I used castor oil on my edges but then went on vacation..so I haven’t used it as much
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
I like castor oil because it really helps my edges grow. I just need to be more consistent with applying it

  • http://www.facebook.com/FayeV6g Faye Venable

I have not attended a hair event yet, most of the time i hear about the event in the New York area the event has passed. But i can’t wait to attend one very soon.

I did great this past week, i have no set goals other than to gain healthy hair. I should be taking these braids out this week coming very excited to see my hair again.

My experience using the castor oil for this challenge is that my hair loves being left alone and not too much manipulation, and my hair line is filling in very nicely, that is exciting in and of it self. So glad I got into this challenge.

    1) There aren’t many in my area and when there are they always seemed to be planned around the time my $$$ flow is in the wrong direction!! lol
    2) Did not do very well this week, only got 2 days in!
    3) I have learned a lot in this challenge but most importantly…consistency is key!

  • April

I haven’t attended a Natural Hair event yet but I would love to. There is never one in the Baltimore area. I did ok last week, i’m still trying to push past three time. My experience has been great so far. I have learned that this natural hair journey is definately trial and error.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=555974457 Alicia Godfrey-White

    1. No I do not attend any natural hair event due to the fact that are none in my area. However, my co-worker and her friend just started are natural hair group for our area and will start getting naturals together for some events.
    2. I did great, I applied my oil at least 3x per week and applied to my edges every night.
3.I have learned keep it simple and let your hair do what it naturally does. In the begining I manipulated my hair constantly and tried to get it to look a certain way rather than just accept my curls the way they are.
Also when I first started this challenge and opened the castor oil I thought it was going to be “sticky” disater until I learned that I can mix it with other oils. My hair loves the castor mixed with grapeseed oil and it keeps my hair super soft. And as a bonus I can use the castor in its “sticky form to tame my edges while at the same time helping the grow =)

  • Doline

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
No, I haven’t yet because there haven’t been any in my area. I hope that I can attend some in the future because I enjoy meeting new people and talking about natural hair also!!!
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
I exceeded my goals and I was pleased! No challenges this week. Used JBCO for my edges nightly and also used it on my scalp and to seal in moisture on wash day.My hair loved it as much as my edges have!!! I definitely will try to do this on a regular and not just use it on my edges.
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
I’ve had a good experience with this challenge but know I could have done better. I didn’t know anything about castor oil so I learned alot from all the tips you gave and also from reading your experience and the experiences of others. I will definitely keep JBCO as part of my regimen from now on!!!

  • clarel

I haven’t been to any natural hair events because I’ve been busy all summer but I do plan on attending the september dinner with curl friends :)

I did pretty good last week. I applied jbco mixed with coconut oil 4x last week mostly to my edges. I’ve been applying this mix directly to my scalp more now as well. I used it with aloe vera gel. I also tried kinky-curly curling custard which I now love. I followed thru my goals and didn’t have any challenges for this week

My experiences thru this challenge have been great. My hair has been getting thicker which is what I wanted. My edges are starting to grow back( that has been a long journey) and my hair has shown some growth

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=38902088 Ashley MyOpportunity Awaits-Hi

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?

I havent because there havent been any where I live.

    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?

Last week was ok but I kind of been slacking on the castor oil regimen but have increased on using conditioner and leave in conditioner.

    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?

My experience has been wonderful, I never realized how amazing having natural hair could be. I have also learned to be happy with my own hair, no one person’s hair is alike. Once I learned what types of hair I had and how to maintain it then I loved it!!! I really think I wanna straightened it though.

  • Venita

There arent any natural hair event where i live. I didnt do good last week im dealing a family issuse.ive learned a little does go a long way.

  • Samantha B.

    1. I have attended a natural hair event before, but have not in about a year or so. They are a great way to get insight from professionals and ladies that are natural.
    2. Last week I did good. I used castor oil almost daily. I had to trim a lot a while ago :( but I see my length coming back. My nape area is doing wonderful and I am so excited for it to catch up. I guess the tlc I give it is working out.
    3. The castor oil challenge has been a blessing to me and my hair. My hair is more soft and supple and rarely dries out. I have been putting castor oil on my hair and massaging my scalp a couple of times a week, while focusing on my nape area. I have learned that my hair loves it soo much and I have the shine and moisture that in the beginning of my journey I had no clue about how to maintain. As my younger cousin tells me each time she touches my hair “OMG Samantha, your hair is so moisturized” lol!

  • Natalie Gore

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
~i have only had the opportunity to attend one event, mainly because i just recently got into the natural hair community and also because Memphis is just kinda catching up to having more natural hair events.
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far?
~still in my PS of crochet braids and unfortunately the way i installed this one i made it just a little more difficult to get to my actual scalp but i have continued to apply to my edges, though.
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
~for one doing the challenge has enabled me to be consistent about caring for my hair.

  • KLeeBaby

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not? I have not attended a natural hair event because they are rarely in the DC area.
    2. How did you do last week (week 10)? Did you follow through with your goals? Any challenges thus far? No challenges. I had to order some more oil, so I wasn’t able to achieve my goals. UGH!!
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned? I have absolutely enjoyed the challenge! My experience has enlightened me and led me to put CO on my son’s hairline. I even learned that many barbers and hairstylist do not know the benefits of applying CO. I got a lot of “push back” about the benefits and if it works…so NOW I have a bet with my son’s barber to see if his hairline grows in with me applying the CO! I will keep you informed…

  • vicky

    1. No. not aware of any natural hair events in Oklahoma.
    2. I used castor oil to seal my ends. also used it for treating my hair, scalp, edges & eye brows.
    3. This experience help me to see that i don’t have to put heat to my hair. I’ve learned how to embrace my natural hair and I’ve learned how castor oil can really strengthen, protect, thicken & grow the hair, i never knew this before the challenge.it also caused me to gain knowledge regarding the grape seed oil, olive oil, carrot oil, jahoba oil, argan oil,tea tree oil, etc. I also learned how important water is for the hair.

  • Terri

    1. No I dont attend natural hair events because there isnt any in Oklahoma.
    2. I did great last week and I have not had any challenges thus far!
3.I have loved every bit of this castor oil challenge! I have learned alot about my hair but I think the most important thing I learned is to listen to my hair, be consistent with my regimen, and to moisturize my 4C hair with LOC method. Castor oil will always stay in my regimen because my hair loves it as prepoo!

    1. Do you attend natural hair events? Why/Why not?
Yes I do and I absolutely love them. I love the discussions, the beauty, the networking, and getting hait tips from my other natural sisters. It is a pleasure to come together as a sisterhood to help and encorage one another along our natural hair journey. I have been inspired to start my own which is launching next month. Stay tune!!!

Awesome! My edges are filling in. Yaaaay!!
    3. How would you describe your experience during this castor oil challenge? What have you learned?
This challenge has been a great learning experience for me. I am learning a lot about my hair, how to take care of it, and how incredible castor oil is for hair maintence and growth. It will definitely be a staple product in my life forever.
