#NaturalHair!

(CLOSED) Castor Oil Challenge Summer 2012 – REGISTRATION

The challenge will begin on June 1, 2012 and end on Sept 1, 2012.

REGISTRATION IS CLOSED. Look out for more hair challenges in the future. Subscribe to our general newsletter to stay updated!

The Spring 2012 Challenge has been extremely successful, with over 200 women participating and dedicating themselves to consistent use of castor oil in their weekly regimen.  Rubbing castor oil on your scalp and the roots of your hair will regenerate new hair growth within months. This will also thicken thinning hair. The anti-bacterial and anti-fungicidal properties of Ricinoleic Acid in castor oil protects the scalp and hair from infections which can cause hair loss. The Omega-9 fatty acids in castor oil also nourish the hair and prevent the scalp from drying. Castor oil is a humectant as it draws moisture into the hair and skin. Applying castor oil on hair will keep it looking soft, shiny and strong.

Challenge Goals

The goal of is this challenge is to grow your hair thick & long over a 3 month period. While we understand that your hair will not grow to waist length in 3 months, we know that with consistent use of castor oil you WILL reap great benefits. This challenge is our way of motivating you to partake in a routine healthy hair regimen using castor oil and we hope that you will be motivated enough to continue this regimen after the challenge.

Results

Last season of the challenge, we all checked in during week 5.  During the challenge I used 3 different kinds of Castor Oil (CO). I used Jamaican Black Castor Oil (JBCO) from OilsFromJamaica (Coconut JBCO, Lavender JBCO) and Pharmacy CO yes I know it says laxative.

As you can see my results after just 5 weeks were phenomenal!  To see the great progress made by all the other ladies, visit here and scroll down to the comments to view their Day 1 pics in comparison to their week 5 pics. You will be pleased for sure!

Hey love, Im not sure why you are having a problem, The only thing I can think of is that you are on your cell phone and not a desktop computer. You have to be on a desktop computer to load a pic.  When you start typing in the box or even if you dont type anything, but you just click in the box you will see ” + image ” then click on it and upload.

    • Ebony

      Protective style

  • Jokey1

I would love to join this challenge but I have a question. For about a month in the summer I will have braids. Can I still participate in the challenge if my hair will not be in its natural state throughout the duration of the challenge?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Of course.

Your hair being in braids is not considered “not in it’s natural state”, that is a protective style. Protective styles are great for healthy hair regimens.

I’m so down for this. I have a semi-bald spot in my hair that is starting to grow in. I’d like to see how much this challenge does for it. I will be JBCO, shoulder length hair, I will be using it on my scalp, and to seal my hair

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Be sure to take a really good pic of that semi bald spot so you can see the comparison. Cool?

  • Chaka: OhsOdaMsel

I have been watching and reading your reviews and post for the last couple of months now, because I have been going through my natrual process for right at a year now. Its been rough and almost discouraging because I have dry, damage, and moisture issuses. Mainly, because of my sow-in’s I worn to transition my hair, and the inability to devote time to my hair because im a full-time nursing student. But I really love your hair and your advice on healthy natural hair and would love to be apart of castor oil Challenge.

    1. What type of Castor Oil will you be using? since I have just begun learning the different  techinques (pre-poo’s, etc) I have been only using Pharmacy Castor oils. But due to time im inconsistent in process. But with the June 1st challenge hope it will motivate me to achieve the look I want for my hair.
    2. How long is your hair now-front, sides, and back? It could be longer, but now its really coiled with the tight kinky hair (detangling) and it really looks as a bushey afro right now.
3.How will you be using your Castor Oil?(Edges, Scalp, Sealing Hair, Hot oil treatments, Overnight Steaming, etc. / 3x a week, 5x a week, etc.) I plan on striving to use the castor oil to max potential to acheive to growth, shine, and definition it provides.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Hey love!
      I’m happy to have you.

I need to know exactly how many days you plan to do what. 3 days edges? 5 days scalp? 1 day sealing? Etc.

  • Abba_fakile

This does mean no braids right?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Braids are totally allowed. There are no rules in how you have to wear your hair. All styles and textures are welcome.

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500590544 NaturallyDivine NaturalDiva

    1. I will be using the regular JBCO and the Home Health Cold Pressed Castor Oil.
    2. My hair is right below my nose in the front, about an inch below my earlobes on the sides          and touching my shoulders in the back.
    3. I will rub JBCO on my edges 7x a week and I will oil my scalp and seal with the cold pressed castor oil 4x a week. I don’t have a set washing schedule. I just kinda let my hair tell me when it needs to be washed but I will use the castor oil to seal whenever I do wash.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Thanks for joining! Tell your friends!Do you have your oil already?

      • NaturallyDivine NaturalDiva

Sorry for the delayed response but I’m geared up & ready to go. I have my oil ready!

  • OhsOdaMsel

I’m try 5 day scalp and 1 day seal!! Is the sealing done when I wash?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Sealing is done after you apply water to your hair. It can be after a wash. After a spritz with water. Or if you just want to douse your head in water. You apply oil to seal in the moisture. You can apply oil directly after water, but I recommend sealing with the oil after you put your leave in conditioner on.

  • Cynthia

    1. What type of Castor Oil will you be using? JBCO if I can find it locally or pharmacy CO

    2. How long is your hair now-front, sides, and back? My pics are attached but front is passed nose, side is passed earlobe and back is about shoulder length.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Hey love,

If your hair is long enough to stretch, then stretching would be a great way to get true measurements. During the challenge we measure our hair 2x-one month in and then again at the very end. You will have a good idea of where your starting length is if you stretch.

Good luck to everyone entering this challenge! I can’t wait to start!

    3. How will I be using the castor oil?
I will be using it as a wkly hot oil treatment, and up to three times a week. Sure am hoping this will work because it would be nice if I can see my hair all the same length.  Is that possible?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

No not possible on it’s own, and even if you cut it your hair could still end up at different lengths bc our hair grows at all different rates and at different times.

    2. How long is your hair now-front, sides, and back? super short twa ( I just did a bc to go natural 3 weeks ago)
3.How will you be using your Castor Oil? edges daily, scalp at bedtime 3x a week.

  • Venuslife

Hi I want in! I’ll be using pharmacy CO to start for hot oil treatments and JBCO for my scalp. I’ll use the JBCO 3x a week and the PCO 1x a week. Right now my hair is very short. Its close to the scalp on all sides ( I’ve been cutting it all spring).

  • Venuslife

I just thought of something. Is there a length requirement for your hair? I hope not, I just decided to let it grow when I saw this challenge. It seemed to be a sign.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

No length requirements. The rules I stated are the only rules.

  • King Donnak

When you say you used all three did you make a mix of all three or a different one each month?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

No mixture. I used them individually. Pharmacy Castor Oil is inexpensive. When doing a prepoo I use ALOT of oil so it was a smarter decision to use the pharmacy castor oil. JBCO was used to seal hair, on edges and to add moisture in the mornings.

  • Chamcmillan

What type of Castor Oil will you be using? JBCO

    2. How long is your hair now-front, sides, and back? My hair is nose length in the front, sides is a little past my ear and the back is to my shoulders.

3.How will you be using your Castor Oil? I will be using the JBCO twice a day on my edges and my scalp. I am currently going through postpartum shedding and my edges are horrible.

These were the only pictures I could find that showed my recent length.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

I’m going through the post partum shedding too sis. I’ve never seen NY edges like this-it’s depressing!

  • Denatheone

Jenell, can you please explain how to apply the castor oil.. Do you apply yo wet/dry hair, or do you use on the scalp? How often should it be applied.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Hey love,

One of the greatest things about this challenge is you can play around with the many ways to use castor oil.
Here are some of the ways I use my castor oil during the challenge.

On wash day I spritz a section of my hair with water. Then I saturate this wet section with castor oil and conditioner. This is known as a pre-poo. You can watch a video of me doing a prepoo here http://KinkyCurlyCoilyMe.com/my-regimen
Another way I use castor oil is to seal my wet his after I wash my hair. I apply my leave in conditioner, then my jbco on top, then top it off with a moisturizer. I then twist my hair and allow it to air dry.
Sometimes at night I massage jbco on each dry section of my hair before I retwist it for bed. I add a little extra directly to my ends.
A few nights a week I apply the jbco directly to my scalp. I use an applicator bottle to make this easier. Then I massage my scalp with my fingers.
Now that im going through some post partum shedding on my edges, I apply the castor oil directly on my edges at night.
I don’t wet my hair often. But this is a personal choice. I like my hair stretched and spritzing my hair causes it to shrink. You could spritz your hair anytime you want. Your hair will love it.
Many of the women in the spring challenge used castor oil in the same ways I have explained but there are many other ways too. You could use it as a hot oil treatment, add castor oil to your hair and then put your deep conditioner on and let it marinate for a good second (slang for a long time), you could
The possibilities are endless. If you want more ideas read the comments forms the spring challenge there are hundreds of comments each week.

  • Vicki71584

I’ll be using cold pressed castor oil, my hair length is slightly past the middle of my forehead, slightly past my ear, and less then half way down my neck in the back.  I’ll be using the castor oil on my scalp, and I’ll put it on my slightly damp hair and sleeping with that overnight.

    1. I will be using JBCO…….

    2. My hair is now neck-length, due to a much need trim. I’d rather lose the length than the healthiness of my hair. These are my measurements:

    Sides (L) 5.75 in – (R) 5.3 in
    Front – 7 in

I will be getting my hair in Senegalese twist in a month, but will be continuing with the challenge. Here’s to healthy growing! :)

    1. What type of Castor Oil will you be using? I have been using Tropical Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil, which I picked up from 125th street in NYC. I will be thinning it out with coconut oil when used to oil my scalp. I will be using it full strength during other times in my routine.

    2. How long is your hair now-front, sides, and back? My hair length is all over the place! While I have been natural for 6+ years, bad weaving techniques left me with thinning, heat damaged strands at weird spots throughout. My curl pattern also greatly varies throughout. I think there may be some permanent damage in some areas. Since August of 2011, I have tried to be a healthy natural. I have managed to cut out all of the heat damaged hair but I struggle with uneven areas and major shrinkage.
Here are my lengths when measured this past month:
    Front 4.5″
    Back 5″
    Sides: 3.5″ – 4.5″
Middle: 3.5″ (Major area of damage)

There will be no more dusting for me! Now I will focus on sticking with my moisture and pamper routine (Thanks Jenell!), while trying to find an inexpensive, effective curl defining cream.
I am going to treat myself to a professional cut and style to celebrate a year of healthy, happy natural curls in August. I am leaning towards Hair Rules salon.

    3. How will you be using your Castor Oil?
For the past month or so, I have used Castor Oil as the main oil in my routine. I use it nightly on my edges and eyebrows (it works!) I also mix it with coconut and olive oil for overnight pre-poo treatments twice a week. I also will use it lightly throughout the week during scalp massages.

This is my first official challenge and I am beyond excited. Happy hair growing to you all!

P.S. I tried uploading a picture but for some reason it is not working for me. I try a little later to post a pic showing off my curls! ;)

  • http://www.facebook.com/KalimbaJakenjuwha Kalimba Jakenjuwha

Yay!! I found what I am looking for!!!! <3 I just cut my hair Saturday and I have less that 1 inch of hair. I want to grow my hair out until it's shoulder length.  I will not be able to start on the set date…maybe 2 weeks after? But it's def. gonna be exactly 3 months. Im planning on rocking micro twists this entire time. I can't wait to get started!

  • http://www.facebook.com/KalimbaJakenjuwha Kalimba Jakenjuwha

I’ve been natural for 2 years now and have rocked the TWA the entire time, I’m joining this growth challenge for 2 reasons: 1) to have healthier hair b/c I damaged it with constant dying, had knots, and split ends. and 2)because I’m curious to know how I’d look with long hair. I have a Short term hair goal in mind, it’s not to long so I might be able to reach it by the end of the year. When my hair grows long enough, I will continue the challenge with micro braids in my hair.

SOOOOO EXCITED!! I know you say use it how you want but is it best to use it, wash one day, use it two days, wash the next? Or use it “x” amount of consecutive days?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Haha.
My suggestions on how to use it. This is NOT exactly what I do, but it’s a suggestion for someone who is ambitious like yourself. :-)
Day 1 – Wash day, use castor oil (CO) to prepoo OR add a little CO to your deep conditioner OR use CO for hot oil treatment. (You can do all 3 if you have A LOT of time). When hair is all clean, apply your leave in conditioner, then CO, then moisturizer to each section.
Day 2 – massage scalp and edges with CO

Day 3 – mist hair with water, apply CO to ends of hair and rub on hair and steam over nigh ( put on plastic cap and go to bed)
Day 4 – mist hair with water, apply CO to ends of hair and rub on hair. Apply your moisturizer on hair.
Day 5 – massage scalp and edges with CO

      Day 6 – nothing.

Day 7 – wash day. Follow day 1 suggestions

      • Pearlette Walker

I’m glad you broke it down that way because I was a little concerned on how to use it.

I’m really hoping I gain length & shine & healthy hair from this challenge. Especially since giving birth to my 2mth old baby girl, I don’t wanna go thru a bad post partum shedding like other moms :-/ *wish me luck*. MONET ROSE

Ok, so I finally decided to be in again!  Here goes:

    1. What type of Castor Oil will you be using?

Now Solutions 100% pure castor oil.  It says it’s good for skin and hair.

    2. How long is your hair now-front, sides, and back?

The front is about 9 inches.  It stops just under my chin.  The back and sides are about 10 inches.

3.How will you be using your Castor Oil?

I’ll still use it to seal after moisturizing, but I want to try something different this time. In addition, this time I think I’ll aim for a Castor Oil hot oil treatment every other week.  That might be too much for my hair, but I’ll see how it works and then adjust if needed.  I’m also going to head over to the health food store and buy some essential oils.  I want to make this stuff smell good without mixing it with other oils so much.

  • Naturally_Me

I will be using Now Solutions castor oil daily for a scalp massage and around my edges. I will also use it weekly for my pre-poo, as well as a sealant after I moisturize my hair. The front of my hair is 9 inches, the side is 4.5 inches and the back of 4 inches.

  • http://twitter.com/readNrainbow TeaCake

Summer Challenge: I’ll be using JBCO. Front: nose length [bottom of it]; Sides: under jaw bone; Back: touching side of shoulder blade. I’ll probably use the oil for my edges, scalp & sealing my ends. More than likely 3x a week. Maybe this challenge will convince me not to chop it all off.

I enjoy your channel, and this will be my 2nd
attempt at this challenge. I am very uninspired by my hair. I have thick hair
but my sides are not at all even with the rest of my head as far as volume and
length goes so I’m hoping this challenge will help me. I cut my hair last
August to help even it out, and I’m trying to stay away from haircuts for a
    while.

    1. I am using Jamaican Black Castor Oil. I will also use the
red pimento hair growth oil with black castor oil in it on wash days.

    2. My hair in the front is 7 inches at my top lip.  The sides are uneven: the right side is 7
inches just about at my collar bone, and the left side is about 6 inches neck
length.  The back is 6 inches. The middle
    is about 71/2 inches.

    3. I will be using my castor oil for scalp massages 3 times
per week. I will focus on my sides  and edges
as I’ve always had issues there. I will use the red pimento seed oil mainly on
my edges with JBCO on the rest of my hair as a prepoo on wash days.

    4. I will attach my picture

    5. I have already subscribed to the newsletter.

  • http://twitter.com/ILoveYouThough Bree Darcel

    1. Cold Pressed (purchased at Whole Foods)
    2. Shortest front piece–about the corner of my eye
        Side pieces–jaw line
Back piece–the bone at the bottom of my neck

    3. Pre-poo (1x a week)
Scalp and edges (3x a week)
Sealing and styling (Mixed it with olive oil lotion yesterday, and today with olive oil moisturizer which is not as thick, because the oil makes my hair feel heavy and just not how I like it, but that may also be because my hair is in braids? Idk, but I just don’t like it. So if it continues to feel icky I might stop using it for this soon…)

Note: I actually used the oil for the first time yesterday, so this is Day 2 for me, and my hair is in it’s 4th week of braids, which I’m taking down Friday, and when I do. I’ll probably take a diff pic so I can make a consistent comparison in September. I don’t know if that matters or not but it sounded like a good idea to me.

    =)
