Are You Damaging Your Hair From OVER-Moisturizing?

By Jenell — September 17, 2012

Like the saying goes: You can have too much of a good thing.

OK, so you’ve crossed over to natural hair and everyone’s talking about how important it is to moisturize your hair on a regular basis. I mean, you don’t want hair that tangles and breaks easily, do you? Of course not! But there’s a catch when it comes to moisture:

While moisture is great for hair, it is also possible to OVER-moisturize your hair to the point that it’ll be just as weak and prone to breakage as hair that’s dry.

Sounds odd doesn’t it? But it’s true.

We all know that dry hair is something to avoid. And we also know how dry hair usually looks and feels like- usually dull, straw-like and easily breaks when pulled or combed. But what about over-moisturized hair? What does that look like? And what does it feel like? Well, over-moisturized hair tends to look limp, oily and my even have a “mushy” feel when rubbed between your fingers. Over-moisturized hair is also very elastic and stretchable. And at its extreme, over-moisturized hair is basically Soul Glo or Jheri Curl-like. Still don’t know what I’m getting at? Well here’s a visual…

God I love that movie!

Anyhoo, both dry and over-moisturized are weak and prone to breakage. Hair is a fiber- a fiber that’s made of long strings of protein that are “braided’ together- kind of like cable wire. Hair’s funny in a way because it is quite strong and resilient, but still very delicate at the same time. And basically, if you want to have healthy hair that doesn’t break easily, you’ll need to find a balance where you’re moisturizing it just enough to help it maintain elasticity. Elasticity is a word that describes hair’s ability to stretch and recoil. Ultimately, when it comes to keeping hair strong and healthy, protein-moisture balance becomes key.

So how do you find a balance? And how do you keep from moisturizing hair too much?

Here are a few tips:

  • Avoid daily wash-n-go’s, especially if you’re not regularly giving your hair protein, i.e. protein treatments
  • Cut back on lengthy deep conditioning treatments. Most conditioners don’t need to be held in hair for longer than 15 minutes, and depending on what type of conditioner it is, keeping one in hair longer than that, could actually weaken your hair
  • Regularly balance moisturize with protein by using products with hydrolyzed proteins (i.e. hydrolyzed wheat protein, hydrolyzed quinoa protein) and/or amino acids. These all help to strengthen hair and counteract the effects of over-moisturizing

Remember, hair needs moisture, but it’s all about balance. Having over-moisturized hair is just as bad as overly dry hair. So when moisturizing your hair, make sure to do it regularly and sensibly. As great as moisture is for hair, it is possible to overdue a good thing.

How often do you moisturize your hair? What are your favorite hair moisturizers?

I never thought about over moisturizing and the effects it could have on our hair. Reading the post, I dont believe I fall in that category but it do make me wonder. Currently my favorite moisturizer is the Curl Enhancing Smoothie, LOVE LOVE LOVE! And I moisturize my hair simply depending on how it looks and feels. If it tells me it needs moisture then I moisturize it; sometimes I can skip a day. GREAT POST!!!

Very good article & you are VERY wrong for that pic(lol). My hair is currently on the dry side and I’m trying to up my moisture. I always throw in a protein treatment depending on how my hair feels to balance things out.

    • Shekeya

Hi I’m 6mo natural and have yet to do a protein treatment. I don’t think my hair is in dier need of one but I would love to see how it responds to protein directly. Do you have suggestions on a good (brand or mixture) for one? Thanks in advance!!

Shekeya: I haven’t actually used a protein treatment, mainly because I’m too broke, but the one I’ve heard quite a few naturals singing the praises of is the ApHogee protein treatment. I’m not quite sure whether or not it comes in a set, (I think it does) But check your local beauty supply store for it, they should have it.
        Hope that helped! :D

I use Nexxus Emergencee/Aloxxi. I’ve been using it for 6 or 7 years and it has never failed me whether I was relaxed, transitioning, or natural. I have a little bit of heat damage so even though I’m natural I still use it every once in a while.

        • guyanesesista

Oh and sorry about the late reply.

        • Shekeya

So I decided that I’m gonna do one this month. I used the Aphogee when I was relaxed and it worked pretty good. I’m familiar with the Nexxus line however I didnt know of that product so I may choose that one and see how my hair responds. Thanks alot!!

Let us know how it works out.

Great article…It’s making me hyperventilate though…One moment I’m scared of putting too much protein, another I’m scared of putting too much moisture….and I’m still stuck with dry porous hair. lol. I wish I had a sensor on my hair that told me when it has had enough of everything

right im still trying to figure my hair out too

LOL @ making you hyperventilate! I totally get it – it’s so hard isn’t it? We’re supposed to do this, we’re not supposed to do that. I felt the same when reading this, it’s so hard to know what’s best. Because my hair is always dry, I’m ALL about the moisture… I’ve started using the LOC method daily to try and maintain moisture. I once tried doing a protein treatment (Palmers Coconut Oil Protein Pack) and it made my hair so dry, hard and crunchy it scared the living bejebus out of me, so I haven’t done another protein treatment since.

      • http://youtube.com/jambeauty098280 Lorre

I think I need to try the LOC method. I’m getting restless! lol. Its to the point where I’m thinking of cutting off my hair and starting over because I can’t figure out how to keep it moisturized with this much!

Maybe you’re protein sensitive? I’m very protein sensitive and i avoid the obvious proteins and also avoid coconut oil, avocado oil and even aloe vera because they make my hair hard and brittle (i can handle AV in shampoos though). The annoying thing is they are in almost every product that does not have protein. I finally found a deep conditioner my hair likes and found out the company had changed the formula lawd….

          • http://youtube.com/jambeauty098280 Lorre

i’ve been paying more attention to that lately too! My hair is more moisturized now that I ration my protein, but the ends are still dry. I may have to just cut them off and work from there

      • Woo

I also used the Palmers Coconut Oil Protein Pack thinking I was doing a good thing but it made my hair as hard as a helmet…lol. That’s the second time that’s happened. The first was when someone told me to put mashed avocado and coconut milk in my hair…oh gosh what was I thinking? My hair had never been so hard and dry in my life. After the avocado and protein pack incidents I’ve been avoiding protein altogether. Now I’m thinking I just need to find the right type of protein for my hair.

        • http://twitter.com/IamNads Nadine Stewart

Glad it’s not just me! Because of everything I’ve read, I think I SHOULD be doing protein treatments but after that experience I’ve stayed clear of them. Like you, I think maybe I just need to find the right type of protein.

Yep, I think so too! I started using Shea Moisture’s Yucca & Baobab range but after a few weeks realised I had to stop because my hair didn’t like the proteins in the products – especially the Anti-Breakage Treatment Masque. However, I’ve find that my hair likes Shea Moisture’s Raw Shea line much better – no proteins!

    1. There are so many products on the market, what are your favorites? The Shea Moisture =Moisture Retemtion is my favorite. What qualities does a product have to have in order to become one of your favorites? It has to do what it says it does. Smell good and leave my hair feeling good.
    2. Since using the castor oil, how has your hair been maintaining moisture? It has maintained very well, I am happy!!!
    3. How did you use Castor Oil in your hair last week (week 3). On my edges and on scalp. Did you find yourself losing momentum or are you still going hard?I am still going strong and hard.

Comment placed in the wrong discussion…sorry!!!

Im taking out my braids and reading this and I’ve heard of it before idk my hair is dry as the Sahara so I like moisture and I do henna for protein but a good cheap protein i discovered is vo5 Shea cashmere it has hydrolyzed keratin as the 4th ingredient and I use it as light protein inbetween hennas

Has anyone tried porosity and ingredient patch testing before using protein treatments or sealing with a butter? Don you think this would help tell which products would work for my tight coily, frizzy, dry hair?

  • A.J.

I’m a new transitioner. Its been 3 months since I had a relaxer and I’m trying to find the protein/conditioner balancing routine for my hair. I like how this process is really getting me to know my hair on another level.

I did moisturize my hair a lot when I first learned about the benefits of moisture on natural hair. Now I only moisturize my scalp with oil because I have crochet braids on.

Can anyone tell me the name of the lipstiuck the women in the picture at the very top is wearing.

  • Mel B

I think this is happening to my hair! But its actually not bad, just different? More of my hair is not falling out or snapping off and it hangs better if that makes sense

I have been using a mud wash as shampoo and I don’t think it is properly removing all the products I put into my hair to moisturize it. So over time the buildup makes my hair over moisturized. I’m not sure if I just need to occasionally wash with regular shampoo or if I need a protein treatment. I guess we shall see……..
