African Black Soap is a Miracle Cleanser

Do the words – pimple, acne, black head, white head, hyper pigmentation, uneven skin tone, oily, dry, sensitive – describe your skin??

They all used to describe my skin at one point or another, and I’ve used just about every product known to man to help get my skin on the right track.  I spent lots of money on face washes, cleansers, exfoliates, astringent, toners, spot treatments, wipes, and moisturizers in hopes of clearing my skin.

My skin with NO makeup

Nothing worked well enough.  The results seemed promising after the first few weeks, but then slowly but surely the products lost their effectiveness. I was constantly seeking the next best thing.  Until one day I was introduced to African Black Soap.

What is Black Soap?

Black soap, or African Black Soap, has been used for generations as a natural remedy for acne, eczema, body odor, and to alleviate oily skin. Its many uses include using it as a body soap for cleansing or lathering and using it as a shampoo.

Natural black soap  is actually brown and not black (funny, I know). It is a natural source of vitamins A & E, iron and an all-natural cleanser.works for all skin types, from rough to sensitive, and is said to keep skin smooth and hydrated–but without increasing oily skin for those prone to it. It gives your face a deep cleansing leaving it fresh, and healthier.  It helps work against premature signs of aging and wrinkles, alleviates bumps and spots, is great for removing makeup, and is good for deep cleaning without drying out or irritating skin.  It can be used by any ethnicity and for men or women.

A Piece of Black Soap

How do I use Black Soap?

I use black soap on my face only.  I cleanse my face with black soap in the morning and then again at night. The black soap removes my makeup very easily, which has saved me money because I no longer need to buy those makeup remover wipes!  I’ve been using black soap for a year and in the video below you will see an up close and personal view of the condition of my skin.  My skin is clear, smooth, and glows.  My skin has never looked so good and its new health is directly attributed to my use of black soap.

Click HERE to purchase the exact block of Black Soap that I use on my face. You can get it in varying weights.

I can get you some black soap if this website is too expensive. Send me an email and we can discuss!

thanx for the info on this interesting soap :) I might just buy it!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

You should definitely give it a try. The same price you would pay for commercial products that only last a few months, you can get  piece of black soap to last a year or more!

      • lilkunta

helllo. I have very bad acne, acne vulgaris, with cysts and nodules[i have 3 right now on my face]  all overmy forehead, cheeks, chin, nnose, even ears. Will black soap clear me or it is just for minor acne, like occasional pimples.

also do you have a subscription to your site? i read so many that i forget to check back, so I like to get subscriptions or that option of ‘email me when newreplies are posted’

        • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

I’m really not sure about how much black soap can do for your condition. It wouldn’t hurt to try it out though. It’s so inexpensive.

Wow thanks for writing back to all my questions.
I’m trying to get to a dermatologist.
I was lucky and my neighbor gifted me proactiv but it didnt work.
After back and forth with proactiv cust service they finally admitted their system wont work for me, I need a dermatologist. :(   So I thanked my neighbor and told her to cancel her account. I’m trying to figure out other ways to heal my face and so your post caught my attn. Thanks.

          • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

            Youre welcome love.
So do like I suggested. Try some out. You can get a bar for a few bucks and it lasts a long time.
As stated in the video. I’ve been using black soap for 11 months. My skin didn’t clear up over night. Give it LOTS of time. Come back in one year and update me. Deal?

          • guest2

Just suck it up and see the  dermatologist.  I tried black soap, proactiv and a host of other things for 2 years and was miserable all through it. within 1 month of working with my dermatologist (retinoid at night, Benzaclin in the morning), my face was clearer than I’d seen it since high school.  Don’t waste too much time and money on what people claim are miracle products.

          • Hexadecimol

Some people would rather tough it up and go the natural route. All those harsh chemicals in fast acting products draw free radicals and will only hurt you in the long run :

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Hey love, I added a link to this post of where you can get the soap. Check it out.

      • ArialynnRose

Thank you very much for the link, Jenell! I’m definitely into soap that can last a long time; that’s what value’s all about :)

        Have a good one! : ]

Jenell, prepare yourself to shop for me in the near future. i have a list of stuff i need from that side that is just not available in kenya. and now added to my list is african black soap. i shall contact you soon. :-)

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      I’ll be waiting.

  • Fateesha

Here’s a great article on choosing the best black soap for anyone unfamiliar with black soap.

  • lahill73

that is going to last you the rest of your life! LOL!!! you can bath and shampoo your hair with it as well, I have used it that way and it’s great.

  • Mccraysteph

You can also use this soap on you hair and it is FANTASTIC! My loctition turned me on to this when I first got my hair locked.  You only need a small piece, work it into a lather, and lather it into your hair. don’t rub the bar on your hair though – it will be too concentrated.  I also use it on my face too.  This is AWESOMe stuff!

  • Legf

Where in Brooklyn does she purchase the soap?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

There’s a link right above the video. Check it out.

      • Legf

I didn’t want to pay shipping since I’m in the NYC area, live in the bronx n work in downtown Brooklyn, I figured I can pick it up instead.

        • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Since you work in BK you can definitely visit their store. There location is on the website. They are in BK

  • barebeauty

I love blk soap too, but I find it can be drying, so I only use it twice a wk on my face but everyother day as a bodywash.
Also iv relised dat some have more sheabutter or oils den others, dere for less drying.

I like dudu’s blk soap to wash face n body….and I love usin sheabutter cottage’s liquid blk soap as a shampoo ,as it contains over 40% sheabutter.

    • ArialynnRose

Good to know :) Thanks for your personal experience.

    • donyell

i have the same problem..it dried my face n broke it out..but not mu body. not sure if i should keep using

  • Shaharlee

very cool. I tried purchasing a small amount as a tester, but that site has a $20 minimun… Unheard of?!?!? Is there anywhere else that I can find this soap?  Thanks!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

If you do a google search you can find lots of black soap. But I can only vouch for the soap that I use.

    • Sheerie

I bought mine from eBay. It came within a week and seems authentic.

  • http://www.facebook.com/UnmoveAbleInHisWord Chrishana Brown

Hey there! Thank you so much for all of this information!! You have gorgeous skin! You do not even need make-up. Stay blessed, much love.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      awwww thanks love.
You are so very very welcome!

  • http://twitter.com/Piscesgrl227 Leelee Everett

I love that store. They have tons of body oils and different butters. It’s amazing.
I use the black soap for my body, not just my face and I have seen a difference in my skin complexion form using it.

I lived in BK all my life and was sad when I moved away to take my current position in the South NJ/Philly area. Everytime I’m in NYC, I always make a point to go there and stock up on everything because the shipping charges are quite expensive. lol

  • sheabudda

I plan on stopping by their store in Brooklyn. The minimum for purchase is too high especially when I want to test it out to make sure it is right for me. So just gonna get one bar and if I like it then I can place future orders online. Thanks for sharing your experience about this soap.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Thats a good plan!

  • Dr. Woods Soap

Great and very informative post! We make a great black soap and would love to send you a sample to review for your site. Please let me know if you’re interested! You can also find us on Facebook at

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

If you live in Brooklyn, you can also go to the store and purchase it from them instead of paying the shipping charge.  It’s located in walking distance from Atalntic Center.

  • Denell Craig

is there any reason you don’t cleanse you entire body with it?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

No reasons. Never thought to. ;)

  • bcc_lady_0408

Hi! how are you? just wondering what you use as a moisturizer after washing your face?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Hey love, I mentioned it in the video. But since you missed it. It’s Aveeno Positively Radiant.

      • bcc_lady_0408

        :) thanks so much!

  • guest

I purchased some after watching your video and I received and tried it yesterday. It starting stinging on my face and I was wondering if you experienced this as well when you first started using it?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Hey love,
Ummm I don’t remember if I had stinging. But since I don’t remember I probably didn’t bc that’s pretty traumatic.
Did you apply the soap directly to your face or did you rub it in your hand as I described in the video?

  • Guest2

For some reason, black soap just doesn’t work for me.  It leaves my skin tight and makes me break out MORE :(  It also burns when I put it on my face which makes me sad because I have fond memories of black soap (or Alata samina as we called it) growing up in Ghana. Different strokes for different folks, I guess

    • donyell

      same story w me

  • Amber

Yay for ABS! I’ve been using it for about two months now and I L.O.V.E. it! I too, have blemishes and dark spots that I’m working at trying to remove/minimize, while also evening my skin tone. I also have sebhorric dermatitis (a scalp condition) and it has dramatically improved since I started cleansing my scalp with ABS. It leaves my hair feeling sooo soft! It really is a great organic product.

    • candy taveares

hi Amber l what you to tell me how many time do you use the ABS weekly or mouthly please l need to know couse l have the soap but l have not yet use it esp for my hair thank you and God bless you candy ugwuzor

      • http://www.facebook.com/kennedywife23 Dana Kennedy

Aveeno is good! i was using shea butter, but thats good for cold weather, need to find something for warmer weather.

  • Sosa

Black soap is great so great that a couple of our white friends have started to use it. It’s also great for decreasing razor bumps. My boo and I both use it to lather for shaving as well as a facial cleanser.

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

Hahaha! That “piece” of soap was huge!

      • VermySmi

How is it working for you??

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500140844 Nikki Nicole Gibbs

Hello, so I purchased some of this soap from Madina Corp. through the link you provided and I have decided to challenge myself to use no other facial cleansers except for this pure raw black soap and I am washing my face twice a day with it and then following up with my CeraVe moisturizer. I washed my face last night with it and you are absolutely right, it is an excellent makeup remover. Once I finish this last unopened box of makeup wipes, no more wipes for me. Black Soap is great! I am excited to see what results it provides my skin with down the line. Thanks for the info!

  • http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=500140844 Nikki Nicole Gibbs

I have purchased this raw black soap from Madina Corp. from the link you provided and have been using it daily on my face twice a day along with my moisturizer. I hope to see results in improvement of my skin. I will tell you though, you were absolutely right in that it is an excellent makeup remover. No more makeup wipes for me after I finish this last unopened box! Thanks for sharing!

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      This is great!
Give it time, I started getting compliments on my skin almost a year later. Wash 2x a day and drink lots of water to hydrate your skin, hair and of course body.

  • Baileylsamantha

Thank you soo much for the suggestion!! I found an African shop within a flea market in the area and have been using it for three weeks and I already see a difference.  I have acne on my chin and a little on my cheek areas and I was using Proactiv and when I ran out of that I was using Apricrot scrub and Ambi to clear up the mild scarring, so I was in need of something less costly for my face. It has definitely shown a difference this quick and I am soo glad that I came across this information. Thanks again!

    • tara grant

my daughter keep telling me things want work but i’m just having this gut feeling this will, i’ve tried everything in the book and some products made it worser because i have brown skin , but since i’ve heard that african black soap is amazing for sensitive skin which i do have i feel confident in buying some .the blemishes is around my nose and it looks like i’m in a abusive relationship and dont have a boyfriend . i’m a writer and i want my even skin tone back i hear african black soap well remove the blemishes even my skin tone and look younger ! . i will buy some and tell you how it’s working people look at me like a zombie .but i’m hoping this will be a blessing for me and others  that’s going through drama ! . thanks  baileysamantha ! i’m tara

  • Jannelle

Hi i just started using black soap and so far its been three weeks and I have been breaking out ALOT. more than I have in years. i was wondering when you initially started using the soap if you started to break out as well before your skin cleared up?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Hey love,
What brand of black soap are you using? I’ve learned that not all black soap is created equally.
I didn’t have additional breakouts when using it. My skin began to clear slowly. It wasn’t immediate. Ive been using it for over a year.

      • Jannelle

Im using the raw African Black Soap which I got from Coastal Scents. I did a lot of research via the Internet & YouTube & most people seemed really fond of the soap from Coastal Scents & it looks exactly like yours, it’s not the fake black bar soap many people try to sell. I noticed in the video you said you still use your over the

        • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

I still use the over the….?

        • Nikki

Hey, just a thought Jannelle, I have Coastal Scents raw african black soap and just ordered some more from them. I started using it about a year ago, but I experimented with other products throughout the year and just recently started back about 3 weeks ago. It is taking off that dead layer of skin to reveal new and fresh skin. My skin did purge by breaking out the first week because it was adjusting to it. But it is about 95% better.

  • Leana

    Hi Jenell,

I love watching your videos. Have you heard of “African Black Soap” by Skye Botanicals-brightening cleanser with lemon peel and lemongrass? It can be drying..so I was wondering what you use as a moisturizer. I use olive oil w/water and during the day, I use my “neutrogena SPF” facial moisturizer. Sometimes I use my olive oil during the day-but then it can be too oily for my face. I’m acne prone and oily. My skin is much better than it use to be since I stopped facial meds and other marketing products.

Also, do you know if regular glycerine vs. veg glycerine can be used on the hair? When I use veg gly, it’s too sticky and it makes my scalp sore. I didn’t find any vid’s from you in regards to glycerine.

Thank you and God bless you for all your efforts in hair care.
    Leana (marian_lea@yahoo.com)

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

      Hey love,

I moisturize with Aveeno positively radiant and The Body Shop Mattifying Lotion.
As for the glycerin, are you diluting it? Vegetable glycerin is preferred.

    • Leana

      Hi Jenell,

Thanks for writing back. I did dilute it, but maybe my ratio was off or maybe it’s just not for me. I probably can’t leave it in like some ladies.

      God bless you,

      • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

I’ll check for some blends. And post them.

  • ShayC

I’d love to try some African Black Soap. That shipping on that site is kind of ridiculous

  • http://www.facebook.com/SabrinaBoissiere Sabrina Boissiere

Do you chisel off pieces and use; how do you store the block and how long can it last/shelf life? Also have you tried Shea Moistures Black soap?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

I cut off chunks, the soap is very soft and malleable. I store it in an open soap dish. Yes I’ve used SheaMoisture ABS and it was really good.

  • AFTabron

I am just discovering your wonderful blog and FB postings ~ I have always wanted to try PURE/RAW black soap ~ not the diluted kind in our neighboorhood corner beauty supply stores ~ I could not find your email ~ I would love to order some PURE/RAW black soap but the Madina website is ‘highway’ rip off on their shipping handling. Would you know of another reason priced website?

    • http://www.naturallycurly.com/ blessed_coils

I agree the shipping was $9.44, but I don’t like shopping in the stores (too crowded, too much going on) so I ordered some other things to make me feel better…lol

  • Audrey

Thanks Jenell-girl!! You just answered all the questions Ia had…I live in NJ where does your girlfriend gets the block of soap from!? lol….I might not want the whole thing but I need me sum of it really bad….I had a bad surge of acne when I was a teenager and it just so happened that I’m going through it again right now and I don’t know what to do, I started using the black soap for about a month now but I’m still breaking out…possibly because of the nature of the soap…but after watching this it gave me hope…now where can I get
the soap from?? Help a sista out….

    • april

In NJ you can get it in Newark at any Muslim or Africasn store in its raw form and also in New Brunswick hope those areas are near you I am a Jersey girl

  • Emefa Agbeadzi

I must say black soap works like magic because I always used it when I was in Ghana but now I’m in Hamburg, Germany and it really hard to come across the original black soap.
So my question is where can I purchase the original black soap here(Hamburg)? Do you have branches (other shops) here too??

  • Cmac

I’ve been using black soap too for ~2wks and it’s DA BOMBS! It’s the best thing on this earth for me right now! I got it from an African store in my Bronx neighborhood for FREE ‘cuz the cashier knew that it would work. She gave to me as a Trial and Error type ordeal and I am amazed! She took me to where it was to cut it and it was this huge block of tan looking thing. I didn’t even know that was the REAL thing…Like this thing is no joke. I also use it for the rest of my body since I deal with eczema and it has definitely helped to calm it down! :) Even leaving it on my face during the night, when I wake up, my skin is lookin’ extra fresh! :)

  • Cmac

    What a bday gift! lol

Hey do you only just use the african black soap and a moisturizer or do you use a toner and if so which one?

    • http://kinkycurlycoilyme.com/ Jenell : BlakIzBeautyful

No toners for me. But I do use clay masks 2-3x a week. I love the Freeman’s clay masks. You can find them at cvs.

I am an African American women that suffers from dark spots after my break outs. Citrus Clear works wonders for my face. After using the Citrus Clear Face Wash for a month I can defintely say I have seen improvement my dark spots are fading and now I am less reliant on make-up.

those of you with acne need to detox for more clarification from the inside try diatomaceous earth food grade, niacin(B3) with the flush with research you will know what mean. Nothing happens overnight but these will help act quicker ANYWAYS, ILOVELUVLove Black soap I am more impressed with its lathering ability. I have washed it all over body. Why don’t you Jenell just curious. cause if it can do what it does for your face then hmmmm. I use it all over and my 9yr old son loves it especially in his hair. We B4..

I am cracking up at that HUGE bar of soap and your laughter. Yes, Jenell, you’ve convinced me, and I love love love black soap. I use it all over. I never knew it would lather up so well and rinse out of my hair so easily. Plus, it lasts forever. It’s great for my once a month “hair clarification,” which is when I actually use a “shampoo.” Most of the time, I just co-wash with conditioner. I now use it on my oily face, which is prone to breakouts and hyper-pigmentation. I have noticed smoother skin, smaller pores and the blemishes are clearing up slowly. Now, all I have to do is keep my dirty hands from touching my face…teehee. Thanks again. Black soap is a keeper!

Hey great video! I am very interested in getting the black but unfortunately i live in the uk and its impossible to get the raw black soap here.I was wondering if I can use your personal shopper service? Please let me know how this would work since i’m in the uk.Thanks

    • claire

I also live in uk and was wondering where i can get the raw black soap

      • Mell

Hi claire. Just a note for you also regarding accessing the black soap either of the above markets i mentioned above and price wise very cheap. No more than £2-3 for a good sized block. Should last at least 2months so long as you use moderately.

    • Mell

Hi MissyE1997. I just recently joined this site read articles and reviews. About the black soap, yes my love you can access it here in the Uk. I live here to, use and purchase it here. The reason you may have not yet found it is because you will only tend to find it in outdoor market areas, but with local native african stores so if you’ve heard of Peckham or Brixton market, that is where you can access the raw

  • Jarmaine

Hello I love your site. I use black soap as well and it’s amazin. I also sell African Black Soap with free shipping on my site Raworganichealers.com

  • Charisse824

Ladies I must say I have sensitive/eczema skin on my face , I too have tried the “ugly black soap” that I got from various stores and they burned/tingled my face(worked wonders on my sons acne though) and left my face feeling tight. However I recently got some black soap from Madina in Brooklyn this stuff is different it doesn’t burn/tingle and my face doesn’t feel tight I see a difference in my skin after 1 week. So give it a try.

I just bought 7 lbs of the stuff, I love it so much. Head to toe. I use it for my hair, evening skin tone, razor bumps, acne scars, SHAVING CREAM, even. A little bit goes a LOOOOOOOOONG way. And you know it helps protect from the sun too, right? This stuff is absolutely fantastic. I don’t need anything else. Just give me my black soap. I’ve eliminated everything from my beauty regime. All I need is black soap.

You have a great personality! I love that you got cracked up holding that huge black soap slab! I get to laughing at stuff like that and I have the best laughs —people should enjoy the simple funny things daily! Lot of people miss out on humor – they d be healthier if they laughed and were positive! I live in the south but if I come up north you ‘d be fun to hang out with. I just started using Shea Mountain Black soap 2 days ago – I have had adult onset acne the past 2 years – never had it as a teen. It seems my face has produced some more red sore spots since using it – I am hoping it is just drawing up impurities and will heal soon with continued use. Did you happen to have more break out at first, then healing??? Blessings- Jessica T

I am from Cameroon, I have used it like all my life lol. My mom just bought in my country and bring it back home. When I was younger I didn’t like it because I wanted like a regular soap from the store (yeah teenagers lol) But know I really love it. Now I start to use it on my hair .

  • Alex

How long did it take for your acne/ post acne marks to vanish with the black soap?

So I’m from Ghana. I use to hate this soap so much because back home if you used it, people would say u poor and the kids would tease you, so I always wanted the good smelling soaps. I started seeing African Black soap everywhere so I searched ti up and there it was. I was so surprise of its price and all. I was just amazed. Now I love it more than ever.I get my mom to make a lot of it and send it to me, and I share with friends.

What is the soap made of because sometimes when I use it I get scratches on my face and skin. I was wondering if there is a way to make the soap less abrasive?

      • mya

I buy the version from walmart which is smooth both work for me!

      • http://www.kinkythought.com knkytht

If you scrub the soap itself on your face it can scratch. Don’t wet the bar like you commonly do with other soap. Keep the bar in a dry area and pull off a tiny piece to lather up and rub the lather into your face.

You can also add a few drops of jojoba, vitamin E or other face-friendly oil to the lather to make it more soothing for your skin.

    • Dante’ Nicole Miller

Wow really?? I would think people from Ghana would be proud of such a amazing soap. I’ve never used it but I’ve heard nothing but great things of it. I have eczema and duel textured skin on my face..I’m really willing to try this soap to see how it is. Does it take care of dark spots and pores?

  • Dante’ Nicole Miller

Okay…I’m now getting this soap..you sold me when you shown how long it lasts…I have an oily nose and a dry face. I’m so tired of my skin I also have eczema…I always wondered…why Africans especially West Africans have such perfect skin…and here’s part of the reason..

  • Serenity Blaylock

Hey. I really want to try this, but I have a few concerns. I have really dry skin and I heard that the soap could actually make that worse. If so, how often should I apply it and what’s a good moisturizer to use along with it? Also, how do you prepare it for use? I know some people mix it with oil and heat it up. Some people even melt it into a liquid form. Please help!! Thanks!

  • Bianca Bullie

with all the different black soaps out there, are they all the same? Have you compared any to the one you are using?

  • Onjeinika Brooks

I buy a brand of it from Wegmans. I believe it is by Nubian Heritage. Amazing! The black African soap is the best product I have ever used. I am almost 40 and my skin is so much better. I follow with witch hazel for an astringent and moisturize with unrefined organic coconut oil. I rarely break out and my skin is smoother.

  • Hannah

I just got a shipment and can’t wait to try it. I heard of it before but because I only ever heard of black people using it I assumed black soap was specific for black skin. I’m so glad that I was wrong because I have tons of acne scars to get rid of. This page was very informational!

  • salomey kwaw

Ook so i wana also join the conversation… just as sarah frm Ghana said wen u use black soap in Ghana u are considered poor. I started getting to know the benefits when i went natural last year. And seeing that most shower gels contains sodium laurel sulfate i understood why wen i used them ma face feels soo tight. i now use black soap as a bathing soap and shampoo and ma skin has never been so flawless. When i tell ma friends in Ghana to use “alata samina” …dats wat its called in Ghana to wash their hair they look at me wid wide-opened eyes cos its seen as a cheap commodity for poor pple..hmm. .ignorance
