2 Protein Treatments You Can Use Weekly for Healthy Natural Hair

Me, Jenell Stewart rocking a twist out after doing a protein treatment the night before

When our hair gets damaged by normal weathering i.e. chemical treatments, exposure to sun, pollution, washing, drying, combing, styling heat use etc, it can only really be mended by protein. A protein treatment works by filling in gaps present on your hair strand and forms a temporary bond.

I use protein treatments regularly as a part of my regimen because my hair thrives off of the weekly therapy.  If you fear that there is a sensitivity to protein or you just don’t like the way it makes your hair feel, I highly suggest you try out the two products I’ve fallen in love with below because they are light and offer maximum conditioning results.  If your hair is broken, brittle and dried out, Does it really hurt to try?

The ApHogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor is a powerful, one step treatment that should be used for home use, between salon visits.  I was introduced to this product by a friend who has raved about it for some time. I finally buckled down and got it and I was very impressed with the results. Watch my review on this product if you’re interested.  This is the type of protein treatment that works as your conditioner on your wash day. You only need to leave it in your hair for 2 minutes-no joke- and then rinse it out.  No heat is needed at all.   I love that using this product doesn’t add an additional step to my wash day at all. In fact it makes it quicker!  With two babies, ain’t nobody got time for 6 step wash days anymore!

This concentrated blend of keratin amino acids, botanical oils, and vitamins does wonders to restore strength and softness to hair that requires a deep, penetrating treatment. It is recommended on tinted, bleached or relaxed hair. ApHogee Keratin 2 Minute Reconstructor helps repair damage caused by chlorine and hard water.
Apply on clean hair in shower and rinse to treat brittle hair with cuticle damage and moderate breakage. It soothes irritated scalp and may be applied following each shampooing until the healthy condition of the hair is restored.

The ORS™ Hair Mayonnaise is a great rich crème conditioning treatment of whole egg protein, olive oil, soybeans, safflower oil, wheat germ oil, and nettle for everyone who wants to maintain healthy, vibrant hair.  It’s an intensive conditioning treatment that moisturizes and strengthens damaged and over-processed hair from within the hair shaft.

This product is an Oldy but Goody!  I’ve been promoting this product from wayyy before I was natural because when I was relaxed, I needed something with enough power to maintain my processed hair, but it was mild enough for me to use on a weekly basis.   Now that I’m natural it’s still the bomb y’all!  I will re-buy this treatment over and over for the rest of my life. Unlike the previous protein treatment, this treatment is a deep conditioner, so it will add an additional step to your regimen because you will need to sit under the dryer if you want to use it quickly.  If you don’t want to sit under the dryer, you should put on a plastic conditioning cap and leave it on for at least 45 min before washing it out.

Thank you for posting this article for I have been looking for a at home protein treatment for my hair. I am lazy and I don’t have a lot of time to be mixing my own protein treatment nor do I know what to mix to make a good treatment for my hair. The hair mayonnaise is something I seen in the store before but didn’t know how to use it, I will be going out to get this today and it’s safe to use every week my hair needs it bad.

As always thanks for the info and the How to Use It section PERFECT!!!

you’re so very welcome. LOL @ “Im lazy” I personally don’t care for mixing things either. Give me a jar or bottle of something any day. LOL

The hair mayo was my first protein treatment I used. This was too hard on my hair, even tho I wanted to love it. I changed up to 2 min ApHogee…Love the 2 min ApHogee! After long term protective styles and once a month I use this. My hair is pretty balanced, but it does not hurt to do a protein treatment for healthy hair.

Oh no… I’m sad your hair doesn’t love the mayo, but happy it loves the apogee. :-)

I use the coconut protein pack from palmers…I have been looking for something to use instead of it because I get tired of purchasing little separate packs lol….I will try the hair mayonnaise first because im a deep conditioning freak lol

in your article for naturally curly you said you use the 2 min reconstructor once a month because it’s intensive and you use the ors hair mayo every two weeks , but here on your website you say you can use them weekly , i’m confused o_0 , isn’t the ors hair mayo suppose to be used once a month since it’s a medium protein treatment and not a light one ? I was hearing that the aphogee 2 min reconstructor is a light protein deepconditioner

  • Dani L

I also like the Aubrey Organics Protein Balancing Conditioner. I have the ApHogee 2 minute treatment. But Ive never thought to use them weekly. I may have to experiment to see if I see a difference in my hair

Wow, Jenell, your hair looks fabulous. What other products did you use other than the protein treatment?. Keep up the good work. Your videos are wonderful. I look forward to them daily.
    Peace my sister!

I alternate the use of both of these every week and I love them both. Last year when I found out my troubles were from over moisturized tresses I started incorporating these two and haven’t looked back since!

Greenbeautyproducts.com has a hydrolyzed wheat protein treatment (all natural for anyone into that, I am) that can be used weekly depending on hair porosity and level of damage. I found GreenBeautyChanel on YouTube (thank goodness).

Also, you mix the protein treatment with your favorite moisturizing conditioner and Ta Da!

I love Smooth Naturals Strengthen and Aubreys GPB. My hair does not like mineral oil or petroleum and some other ingredients in the two mentioned. Like you my hair needs protien. SN Strengthen is actually also one of my favorite leave ins.
